Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
There are no trailers, but only mainly the title of the film and the tagline for the film. It was shown at a licensing expo at Las Vegas

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
I saw this font on Instagram a couple of months ago, but I didn't think it was official because I don't like it at all. Anyway, it's good to see some promotional stuff, I hope we get to see more from the Expo.
Does anyone remember where is that quote from? Or did they just invented it?

First arc, volume 4 (Angel of victory), pages 25-26 (I've just noticed that half the text is missing in Viz's second edition (the one in original reading), page 25. The first edition, mirrored version, is complete.Pablolein wrote: Does anyone remember where is that quote from? Or did they just invented it?

Nice, at least the promotion has started.

Petty statement, looks like superhero cliché, far from Alita's true character. Not a good signal, will they try to sell the movie as just another superhero's?
And I was hoping to see some movie art, plain mediocre.
My favorite quote:
YES! I love being in BATTLE! I love the moment when my body stops being a machine and becomes a PART of me! My blood BOILS and my mind goes all WHITE! It's an incredible HIGH! There's no time to THINK, only action!
(Battle Angel Alita - Angel of Death, Viz)

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Yeah that is a definite concern. But what worries me more is how on earth will they fill 4 freaking volumes into 1 movie? I mean the first 4 volume have enough content to make around 30 episodes of an anime. Even if we cut short to only main plot points and interactions in an OVA style, it would still require a lot of animation time to cover everything. So I kinda worry that it might be impossible for the movie to be really good.kamugin wrote:Petty statement, looks like superhero cliché, far from Alita's true character. Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Honestly, in my opinion the problem with hollywood sometimes (not all the time) in my opinion, sometimes they impresss the audiences through visuals alone blending well with the setting they are displaying and they don't put a lot of effort on screenplay or coherent storytelling. I mean you see it in Jurassic Park, generic horror movies, Mad Max 2, avatar and other movies. Some of the time I always think "yeah the visuals were amazing but the storyline sucks". But that's just based on my experience I mean who knows I do have high standards in generalNovel Kars wrote:Yeah that is a definite concern. Replying you both, Novel Kars and 00_unit:
I wasn't aware that this movie would enclose four entire volumes, this is a big mistake for sure. Trying to fit too many elements in a single movie adaptation is a mess we often see. I would choose the first story only - Alita's second birth and her fight against Makaku. "Less is more" is principle Holywood rarely remembers, while movies have reached an impressive level of visual effects, a good script is ALWAYS THE ESSENTIAL element of a good movie. A good script can compensate a low budget but there isn't any amount of money (visual effects) that can make a poor script become a good movie. Doctor Strange, pops in my mind as the most recent example of that I had watched.
It's good to have high standards, 00_unit, I am like that also: the newest Aliens? I wouldn't touch such a crap, Ghost in the Shell? The traillers and reviews kept me away. In general I am displeased with the recent batch of sci-fi and superhero movies with rare exceptions. I hope the next release of Velerian (and Laureline) isn't like that, but my fear is pretty much the same as regarding Alita's: they will try to fit too much inside a single movie and screw up the script.

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
In an ideal gunnm live action movie series, the first movie should only tackle the first 2 volumes and should be about ~2 hours long. That gives the movie 2x the time that the OVA had for the same material, and would not feel very cluttered.
Then again as far as the poster goes, it might just be bait for regular superhero movie fans, and the plan might be to surprise the audience (who dont know about the manga) with the actual manga setting and the unorthodox themes.
Then again, the main reason I want this movie not to be bad is so that it can create a demand for gunnm merchandise, which itself will create a demand for a full anime series. So in the end, if we do end up getting an anime series (hopefully made by a good studio like production IG) via the economical after-effects of the movie, then it would be okay even if the movie is meh.

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Thinking about it a little better, a good start would be Battle Angel Alita - Angel of Death, the first volume I have read (since Viz didn't bother to number each one back then) and it was so kick ass action packed (kind of Mad Max / cyberpunk crossover) that hooked me into the series forever. Grab the audience by their noses and then in a continuation her origins could be told, but nobody bothered to ask me
I bet this movie will be a flop, like Ghost in The Shell was and the only thing good it may bring is a chance to buy good merchandising and perhaps a decent re-release of Gunnm here in Pindorama (Brazil), since the first one was lousy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like that sometimes. Most people I know gets hyped over visuals like fast and furious, marvel movies or transformers. But I want more than visuals I want good storytelling.kamugin wrote:Replying you both, Novel Kars and 00_unit:

With a series like battle angel alita the problem I think the problem the staff would most likely have is how it involves a lot of character development and most movies I know don't focus on character development too much rather than the main story-line mostly. As Hollywood prefers plot-driven stories rather than character-driven stories.
But as Novel Kars mentioned I still want this movie to exist so it creates more awareness and thus more merchandising opportunities for the series and also finally get an anime as well.
Also there are some significant changes made in the movie, like how Hugo introduces Alita to motorball and will act as her coach for it, something like that.
Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Every new things you guys tell me about this movie sounds bad, if I don't get any good info and the traillers fail to please me, I won't be watching, I don't want to damage further more the feelings I have towards the series (like this Martian arc is doing to me) by allocating bad memories in my already old HD (many years have passed and I still haven't completely forgot that crappy OVA series).00_unit wrote: Also there are some significant changes made in the movie, like how Hugo introduces Alita to motorball and will act as her coach for it, something like that.

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
At this point I just hope they get the characters appropriately, even if they change some events. Although I have to admit that many of the information we've got so far sounds terrible, I think it would be interesting to see an alternative interpretation of the story, but they have to get the characters right.

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
As far as mars chronicle is concerned, keep in mind that this is gunnm so it will take a while for things to get clearer (especially given the slow publications). Also, iirc this part could be the biggest one yet and the author is keen on fleshing out and explaining the story for this part. So have patience, it will be most likely be worth the waitkamugin wrote:Every new things you guys tell me about this movie sounds bad, if I don't get any good info and the traillers fail to please me, I won't be watching, I don't want to damage further more the feelings I have towards the series (like this Martian arc is doing to me) by allocating bad memories in my already old HD (many years have passed and I still haven't completely forgot that crappy OVA series).00_unit wrote: Also there are some significant changes made in the movie, like how Hugo introduces Alita to motorball and will act as her coach for it, something like that.

Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
If the cast page on IMDb is to be believed, they are planning on not only cramming the first four volumes into the movie, but also some OVA-only material plus new characters.
On the plus side, I like Michelle Rodriguez (though I'm not sure if she fits the role of Gerda well), we'll be getting a rather handsome Vector (Mahershaha Ali), and Ed Skrein may look interesting as Zapan. I can see Christoph Waltz as Ido, as long as their version of Ido isn't yet another example of Waltz playing a larger-than-life character.

All things considered, I just hope that it won't be a complete disaster like the Hollywood version of GitS turned out to be...

Well, I do like Michelle Rodriguez, but Gerda is visibly an Aryan-like character, so it seems that Robert Rodriguez is either her relative (although Rodriguez is a very ordinary surname in Spanish-language areas) or has been drinking too much.Silvery wrote:I like Michelle Rodriguez (though I'm not sure if she fits the role of Gerda well).

As to Ghost in the shell… yes, it was a big mistake, to say the least.
Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Another bad choice to add to the pile. For Gerda's role I would chose Emily Blunt for her performance in "Edge of Tomorrow", she is more like her. However how can they put Gerda in this? As I feared, they will fit too many elements into the script and it will be a disaster. After the flop, they will blame us, the fans, like they did in the case of Ghost in The Shell - "The fans rejected the movie, they have spreaded bad comments in social media" and so on.Silvery wrote:I like Michelle Rodriguez (though I'm not sure if she fits the role of Gerda well)
By the way, I noticed that Jennifer Connelly, one of my favorite actresses, is in the cast, however doing the role of Chiren, a character of the damned OAV! If compressing four entire volumes in one movie wasn't enough, they also brought elements from the OAVs?! That's it guys, disaster ensues, the asteroid is in route of collision, nothing can stop it. Curse you Kishiro! You were there and did nothing to fix this!

By the way, I would suggest a real German actress to play this rôle:

Whatever. Nobody bothered to ask us anything, however if the movie flops (and it will flop), they will blame us. I'm not sure if its gerda that will be in the film since it mention it would be a villian I'm pretty sure the character is Calico from the battle angel alita novel and not gerdaSergio Nova wrote:Well, I do like Michelle Rodriguez, but Gerda is visibly an Aryan-like character, so it seems that Robert Rodriguez is either her relative (although Rodriguez is a very ordinary surname in Spanish-language areas) or has been drinking too much.Silvery wrote:I like Michelle Rodriguez (though I'm not sure if she fits the role of Gerda well).

I'm pretty sure the movie is suppose to impress newcomers and might get them into the series and the fans will most likely be critical of the film. But if the movie does suck (most likely) then they have no one to blame for their ineptitude but themselveskamugin wrote:Whatever. Check it again. According to IMDB, Michelle will play Gerda.00_unit wrote:Sergio Nova wrote:Silvery wrote:I'm not sure if its gerda that will be in the film since it mention it would be a villian I'm pretty sure the character is Calico from the battle angel alita novel and not gerda

And that is the correct spelling of the character's name, in German or on Mars. Only Viz named her Gelda. God knows (if so) from witch language they took that spelling.

Yeah you are right sorry for the mix up now I know what I was talking about, apparently I was thinking of an actress named Jennifer Connelly, who will be playing an unnamed villian, which I'm confident this time it's Calico.Sergio Nova wrote:Check it again. I feel like most movie adaptation suffers from either: oversimplifying the story, having too much ideas for a 120 minute or less movie, story being very incoherent, and/or straying away from the theme and tone of what made the source material special.
Re: Alita Battle Angel Film teaser poster
Same old problem, man. Japanese makes no distinction between R and L, her orginal name being ゲルダ, in romaji (and there are three forms of romaji) is "geruda", however it could also be "geluda", both spellings would sound equal to a japanese native. Her name is written in katakana, a phonetic sistem reserved to foreign words, however katakana is very bad to convey sounds from another languages since the phonetic characteres of the japanese doesn't represent simple sounds, like the Roman alphabet, but a vowel or a consonant plus a vowel sound. They can't spell words that ends in consonants (with the exception of N) or pronounce two or more consonants without a vowel between them, so only Yukito could tell exactly wich word in roman characters he was conveying by ゲルダ. Gally is a convention, a fixed word for the Ocident / Roman characters, since ガリィ in romaji is plain "garii" or "galii", doble "L" have no representation in kana.Sergio Nova wrote: And that is the correct spelling of the character's name, in German or on Mars. By the way, Japanese sucks! I'm taking classes for almost two years and a half now, 200 kanjis and counting and a manga like Yotsuba to gives me a hard, hard time
