I don't like this at all.
It's like, even when I want to give something a pass, the trailer continues and give me something else to dislike.
Even if this is one of those "Americanized deceptive trailers", that we see is just wrong. It's just, damn. I'm gonna go on repeat from what other people said, her look is weird and unappealing (big eyes but no octopus lips seriously?), even if we can understand their intent, it was risky, unecessary and fails. The tone and colors are too clean and bright, It's nearly like we are on Zalem and not at the scrapyard. Zalem that is absent of the whole thing. Yugo seems a decade too old (but so is Gally in the end). And fioally this doesn't look like bloody violence is going to be part of the project which can only hurt characters like Makaku or Yugo. I just don't know. So many years telling us that they will not fuck up, and then we get this. For shame. I just hope Mr Kishiro got a big bunch of money for this. And apparently there's also motorball annouced too? This is going to be bloated and unpleasant.

I heard something about the movie being pg-13, I assume they don't want an R rating to get more viewers. In the end corporation make movies to make money most of them ( I say a few not a lot care about making a masterpiece a work of art)

But then why movie is not yet rated? Well they still intended to include blood, just color changed, iirc.

Here is another video.

180 pages reduced to 125? I hope he really improved it and not just rushed. 3 hours of duration would be awesome.
Eh, can't watch it without subtitles.

The movie is coming out in the summer, the studios are going for $$$ over critical acclaim with that release date.

I don't mind omissions/cuts in details that us as fans will nitpick as long as the story doesn't suffer. The OVA did this (major plot changes aside), and it still works. I am getting the sense though that with this movie (so far) and GITS, the writers focused on the A/V media (OVA and 1995 movie) as shortcuts instead of spending the time to really go through the mangas.

I said essentially the same thing before. Rodriguez should barely be able to read and going through almost 900 pages of manga (the first four volumes) is far too much for the poor guy. So if there is an animation available, and dubbed in English to avoid the trouble of reading subtitles, why not use it instead?!... The damage caused by those crappy OVAs is taking place even today!

Or Cameron took the time to read it (being a fan) but his cowriters Laeta Kalogridis and Rodriguez got lazy. They all need to agree on a common script, so they compromised.

Yes the OVA changed a lot, but I actually like it.

Well, I guess at least the people that liked the OVAs will be pleased by the movie then. :|

A lot, of people also enjoyed the Akira anime film (due to the high quality animation), I did enjoy it, but mostly due to its stellar animation, the animation is very impressive.
The story is lousy, especially for newcomers, since the story had side characters that were poorly utilised and the story is confusing due to not having a lot of context like the manga.

I notice most people just care for visual nowadays, some movies or series what people consider well written does perplex me a lot such as superhero movie which I find extremely overrated, makes me think what people's standard on what is well written are decreasing.
Forgive me for sounding cynical as it's just me being critical sometimes

^Reading habits have changed, so it isn't surprising.

Any manga/LN/whatever that is adapted is going to be the subject of the source being better than the adaptation. If I were expecting an adaptation of the OVA into the film, then yes I might be happy(ier). But if I am expecting the manga to be adapted (and it seems like most everyone in this thread is expecting the manga), then understandably I would not.

Don't put Akira movie and those low budget OVAs on the same stands, man. The movie was amazing, especially because of the jaw dropping animation for its time, that is true, but also the script was, in overall, faithful to the manga, they just couldn't fit all that complex plot inside the time constraints of a sole movie, but they did their best.

Even with low budget, the Gunnm OVAs could have been a lot better if they followed the manga more closely. There are numberless animes that are good manga adaptations and some are even better than the original source.

I agree with you regarding superhero movies. Not only them, but also Star Wars sequels, Star Trek movies reboot, Alien sequels, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings and so on. Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on special effects trying to cover badly written and uninspired plots. There are few exceptions, but the overall tendency is that. People have poor judgment and low standards nowadays, looks as if they started watching movies yesterday. And here in Brazil, where people is far more stupid than average, if you dare to criticize, they throw insults at you immediately. Here the rule is quite simple: the "made in us" products are good - even if they are plain bad!

Could be worse, I mean I feel sorry for any avid berserk fans that had seen the atrocity that is the berserk anime with its abysmal CGI, I hated the animation so much the production value was really horrible to watch. I'm sure the battle angel alita film is better than the berserk 2016 anime

Guys, I am going to Jedi mind trick myself into justifying anyone who criticizes the decision to make Alita, and only Alita as having Gollum eyes.... She’s special. What does that mean? It means she is not only a cyborg, but a MASK TUMOR. Extracted from Kagura’s breast. On Mars. 300 years ago. Explanation delivered. :^) But only is fans know this. Let us be defenders.

If htey wanted her to look "special" as in "not human", they had plenty of tricks at hands to make the skin look less fleshy, or the eyes look less biological, with just a bit of texture play. What they did is an anime blackface. It's trying to cash in "anime fans" by giving her "anime" in the sense that people who don't read manga and don't watch anime think it should look like (as see in 90% of anime western parody using the same triangle mouth and big sailor moon eyes). It's just tasteless, really.

Great idea! However I don't know what to trick my mind into... "They portrayed Alita right on target, this movie will be awesome!" or "If you find anything related to this movie you will not be able to see it, it will be completeley erased from your perception."?

I've found an interesting article focused on the "anime eyes" choice:

And here is another good one:

Thanks for this article, it's spot on, sometimes people fail to understand that doing something different and original doesn't always mean it will good or artistic due to those reason alone, execution is also very important.

The Uncanny Valley seems like the obvious desire...I guess the Yugo part hit a lot of her robo-self-consciousness and then poof...whatevs, she a cyborg.

I never liked the "how real does she look" question and this style choice should open up a TON of "silly face cyborgs" I never thought would look ok on screen.

The silly faced cyborgs have always been a yk sticking point for me.

I am glad we are getting something fresh and not watered down.

The cybernetic arms already make it obvious she's not completely human, the eyes dogpile on top of this.

Image

IGN did a trailer breakdown and did a pretty good job tying in the characters with their manga counterparts. Flattered that they lifted a lot of in-universe imagery from the Battle Angel wikia.

Does one of you work for IGN by any chance?

Yes, exactly. It isn't the same case at all.

Gunnm's OVAs are nonsense because they focus on an invented character that doesn't work for absolutely nothing. Chiren steals almost all the footage of the plot and is an unnecessary, bland and predictable character that doesn't contribute anything in the plot. If instead they had focused the first OVA on developing Ido and Makaku, and then continue with the plot of Yugo, a much more interesting plot would have emerged. It has nothing to do with the time of footage, if not with how they used that footage time, and it can be used in many better ways.

Just for the laugh, let me post an article in favor of the movie:
http://goboiano.com/why-james-camerons- ... ash-grabs/
What it says in essence is that Rodrigez and Cameron (specially this one) are some gods that almost never fail to deliver great movies. I remain skeptical, there are no gods to me, neither in the heavens nor in Hollywood.

I have also made my own article in Facebook analyzing the trailer in depth. It's done in Spanish, but you can see the comparisons with the manga and maybe with Google-Translator you can understand the text a bit XD (it's a compilation of my opinions, some of them I put here, in this forum): https://www.facebook.com/notes/rosas-ne ... 716763518/

Some things suddenly occurred to me when watching the trailer again.... Aside from the eyes.

0:05: Gonzu being replaced gives me conflicted feelings, but... I don't know. Was his character that good or is it nostalgia or a resistance against change? I don't entirely mind the wholly more attractive appearance (lets face it, Gonzu live action would have been vomit-inducingly ugly). Ido not having his mark is also apparent. Someone mentioned that it could just be something he's hiding, which would make sense to some degree depending on how the movie presents the world as a whole.

0:11: Not sure what they're trying to do with Tiphares, though i can follow their reasoning. The flat, white, subtly textured surface works in a black and white manga, but in a live action situation it may look far too flat and unimmersive: The structure wouldn't look as big as it actually is. Detailing is necessary to give it the kind of depth needed.

0:19: The trailer shows off the arms for a very long time. This is an almost exact copy of the scene in the manga, which leads me to believe that the scene where the original user was killed will feature in the movie, as will the arc where Alita follows Ido under the suspicion that he killed her. It's an assumption, but i'm using the Chekov's Gun principle here.

0:34: Lets just give the trailer/movie props for this specific bit: They got that part of the origin story right. Look at movies like the Turtles, Dragonball: Evolution or Ghost in the Shell, where they got the very basic ideas wrong. With Alita, at least that seems to be allright. On a sidenote, this and the previous scene show hints of Ido's overprotectiveness.

0:37: Wondering about the buildings in the background. Those look like basic modern skyscrapers rather than the metal metropolis in the manga. They're out of focus too much to see them clearly, they could be something like shanty's at the edge of the garbage.

0:41: Did Alita have tearducts? Can't remember right now, interesting addition. I wonder if this will come up in the movie.

0:47: Hugo being a lot older, understandable. Alita also looks older than she did in the first few volumes of the manga. Nothing against this at all. The market street looks odd though, a little too bright and normal. Those beats? Product placement, really abhorrent. Whoever greenlit that is an idiot. Note that they are mixing up Hugo's and Makaku's storylines: This can be important. She lost her 'pretty' arms before meeting Hugo, her still having them here may indicate that the characters are more entangled than they are in volumes 1 and 2 or in the ova.

----- Updating this later with more thoughts and observations.

It is well written and deep... perhaps too deep, since it looks like you are reviewing an already released movie, not a mere two minutes trailer. I noticed that you took many things from our previous discussion so far. Here is my own, not so extense as yours and it is also based on topics already dicussed here, it is in Portuguese: http://www.shoujo-cafe.com/2017/12/gues ... meiro.html

Glad they didn't give Alita an ahoge, that would makes things a lot weirder, and hope Hollywood doesn't get any weird ideas of adding ahoge in live action movies. Also we got 100 post nice work everyone (99 replies).
