The ALITA Project - Fan Film

Post by Foreezy » Mon Jul 20, 2015 11:24 pm

Hello!

Battle Angel Alita has been very dear to me most of my adult life. I have always dreamt of creating a live-action version of Alita in a film. Unfortunately, James Cameron owns the rights and won't allow someone like me to purchase the rights, buuuuut... I was able to make the first Battle Angel Alita fan-film!

I hope you enjoy it! We want to create a full web series for the first book by next year. Yukito Kishiro has already given us his blessing for the fan-film, so hopefully we can figure out a way to make it happen!

Looking good!!!

Awesome undertaking this project.
I can't wait to see more of this.

Is there going to be more CGI on this, or do you rely solely on the traditional FX?
I think that would be really hard to do, since its a futuristic world with lots of space around the characters.
Green screen some stuff would be inevitable i think.
Both ways can assist each other.

But we will see how it'll work out :)

Wow. I like your take! If you're taking on backers for funding, let me know!

It's a good start for sure but the ninja('s)? felt a bit out of place with the setting we know and love.

Hello all!

Thank you so much for your replies, thoughts, and kind words. This project is a proof-of-concept, basically showing that an Alita can be done in live action. There is no way to avoid CG, but we love the idea of keeping it as real as possible (a la Mad Max: Fury Road)

We plan on turning this into a web series for the first book (throwing in a little Hugo as well) and hopefully setting it up to move onto a second series. Yukito Kishiro has given us a thumbs up, so the only things we need to worry about are Mr Cameron and funding. The series will be a mixture of special makeup effects for Alita (think Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy) miniatures, puppetry, stop-motion, and CG.

We want The ALITA Project to be more than just one person's take on the story, so we encourage more fan films, drawings, and animations. We will open a new section of the website to allow that opportunity for fans.

The next project we hope to undertake is a short scene from the first book. Let me just give you the hint that it will include a Deckman puppet and stop-motion sequence involving brains...

Thanks again everyone! More updates to come!

Why does James Cameron has the license right to Battle Angel Alita? did Viz allow him to use that title?

And he'll start filming the movie AFTER he finish Avatar 3? seriously? shouldn't these licence holder have an expiration date? Because frankly, I for one, cannot simply image that he'll put that on hold, when there are seriously some big fan and, if I'm recalling accurately, the manga is done. What is his excuses for putting it off? Because if he continue to put it off, doesn't that meant that his license hold on the title expired by then?

and if he did a good job as he did with Avatar, he'll probably rake in millions, but if he keep putting it on the back burner, people going to forget. expecially the older crowds who has read this manga and probably picked up the LO series as well.

I've recently read that James Cameron is more interested in expanding the universe of his Avatar movie because, according to him, it's "about something relevant", while BAA is not, he thinks it's just a great story that he likes a lot.

What I think is that he is obviously pushing The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs as far as he can, as simple as that. Or he just thinks genuinely that Avatar is a work of art that can change the world for the better, I don't know. The point is I didn't even liked Avatar, I think is way overrated, and I'm just sad because I think he would do a great job in a BAA movie.

I hope some day we get a great live action, one that honors the original work, made by someone who really cares about it and respect its mythology (something like the Alita Project), but at the same time I think we'll hardly get any of that by Hollywood or the mainstream.

Avatar is a great technological work, I admit, but cinema is much more than that.

The actress looked a bit too old for the Alita character - Should be a bit more slender, mid-teenish build, but short, with face much like Jenna Coleman's but younger-leaner

Or a bit more east-asian looking - Alitas real name is 'Yoko' after all.

Also - Ido has cool haircut and yours looked a bit bald - Ido's lab was all wrong as well. If your going to do an Alita effort, even with a low budget, do it right please. But thanks for trying to fan the Gunnm horse. You guys must have all the time in the world. You can try again ?

Probably be best to just leave it, as is, with the Yukito comics and anime video. I haven't seen any live action interpretation even come close to the feel of what an Alita production based on the comics shoukd be like, yet.

I have seen some potential of it in other efforts though - Such as Victoria of Underworld movie - Some of the CG FX used in Terminator 4. Matrix 3. Pacific Rim for example.

The closest hint of Alita imagery J.C. put out so far was Dark Angel - that was for the GMAs - Now he's pushing some off world program with Avatar - The Alita story takes place in a big city of scrap - So it looks like he's going to wait until after WWIII, to help push the cyber-genetic enhancment program, then.
