So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
Given the move to Kodansha, does anyone think that Viz, being an imprint of Shogakukan and Shueisha, would license LO from the point that Kodansha picks it up? My guess is that from ~Vol. 17 it could move to Del Rey if it the English translation continues, although we have to wait at least a year or so to see what happens. I did ask Viz about this using the only contact email I could find on their website, which relates to orders that go through their store (customer_service@viz.com), but they never responded.
Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
I don't quite understand why that's bothering you - this site provides better translations with lower latencies compared to viz's. Who needs Viz?

Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
TBH it doesn't matter to me if either company or someone else like Dark Horse picks up the official translation as long as someone does it. And as someone who does buy the manga it is something to think about given something as significant as a change in publishers, which will affect non-Japanese releases. Unless there are folks here or who read this forum who don't have a single tankobon or TPB of the series at all.
Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
Exactly. One of them is myself - I don't have any of gunnm/any other manga|anime stuff, but I'm still a huge fan of gunnm.Unless there are folks here or who read this forum who don't have a single tankobon or TPB of the series at all.
I don't have them, because I find that inconvenient.
Also, I'd rather donate to an author directly than buy useless stuff and books for collecting dust on a bookshelf.
PS.
Forestating the upcoming question I'll answer that I prefer e-books/PDFs and I read a lot.
Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?

Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
The editor is always important. Dark Horse, for example, has much better translations than Viz.
As to having the tankohon on a bookshelf, yes, I do. It is a sort of fetish, simply.
I am a fan of digital reading, but I am too old to abandon paper-based books.

You should buy the manga to support the author and every person/company related to its release, otherwise you are a bad fan, not to say a thief. Yukito needs to eat, to pay his bills, etc. If the readers didn't pay, there is no more manga.
Although I have no condition to buy every manga I once read, I buy a lot of them. For example I'm buying the Brazilian release of Claymore although I don't like the adaptation, the choose of words and the paper quality. But I like the manga, so I only read the scanlations.
With Alita I did even more, I purchased first the US edition and later the Brazilian edition (that I never read), so I paid them twice.
If not Viz, I hope another US publisher pick GLO, otherwise I will be obliged to purchase the Japanese edition.

I wish Glénat, the French editor of Gunnm, would lose the rights. They did a really shitty and lazy job with GLO. Which is even more rage worthy because the original Gunnm was very well done (mirroring asside). a shame.

of course, it is a habit here to mess with the customer

Holy crap! And I thought the all the publishers outside Japan (at least the ones in US, Europe and here in Pindorama) stopped mirroring mangas due to the fans claim. Thanks for the warning, I'll never order mangas from France!HumanRage wrote:of course, it is a habit here to mess with the customer

No, I've started once, then stopped... Now it is among the infinity of things I intend to do before Tanatos comes to visit me. I asked that because my wife may want to purchase mangas from France.Sergio Nova wrote:Parlez-vous français?

So it seems your wife will have no choice but reading mirrored mangas.kamugin wrote: No, I've started once, then stopped... Now it is among the infinity of things I intend to do before Tanatos comes to visit me. I asked that because my wife may want to purchase mangas from France.
Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
She buys manily US and Italian editions, but she may want to purchase something from France eventually. However according to her, not all the French publishers mirror mangas. Our colleague HumanRage may clarify the subject for us.Sergio Nova wrote: So it seems your wife will have no choice but reading mirrored mangas.

Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
I wouldn't worry to much either... I like to have the 'complete manga-series in paper form on my shelf lined up with no issue missing' complex too. And I did buy all BAA+LO issues released here, through Carlsen... given as Carlsen is pretty much the only Publisher here in germany with such a wide array of Manga... I'm pretty sure that they will reaquire the license, or already did.. ( since there was no word from them, regarding the hiatus or a change of publisher, since we are lagging behind at least one Issue here anyway.. or is it two now? )
I realy appreciate the work that this little group of individuals does here for the whole 'Gunnm Scene', even it if is small - making it possible for everyone on the planet to more or less read it when japan does, is sure a nice thing for fans - but I also think that Yukito gives his personal 'nod' to it, as it just shows him, that his work is appreciated that much, all over the globe. ( appart from letting people stumble uppon the scanlation on random, and becoming a fan because of that too... more reach and 'being known' are very important factors to become a successful, or EVEN MORE successful Mangaka.)
And, let's face it: If you are a long time reader, you will buy it anyway, as soon as the new book is released ( in your country), just to complete the complex...
I was lucky enough to visit Japan last year for two weeks... too short to realy grasp the atmosphere and richness of that country, or even the Tokyo area, where I was staying at... But, ofcourse I scouted for some Gunnm stuff, and got myself a few of the later Last Order volumes and one of the re releases of the Original Gunnm. They have a special place in my heart ofcourse <3 ( and actualy, they were the only Manga I bought... Akiba just had too many awesome Figures, that are sold out everywhere else on the planet it seems...

See any Gunnm figures?
Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
I've started thinking about this: "There are 3d printing services in my city, which are relatively cheap".

Re: So...Is this the end of the Viz era for Last Order?
to clarify the situation about mirroring in French manga.
No, it's not common anymore. It's actually pretty rare now. Glénat keptit for Gunnm Last order for consistency sake with the former serie. which is, imo, pretty stupid. But it's Glénat, so stupidity is expected.
Hence why I wish Gunnm would end in the hands of a more competent publisher. Anything non Glénat would go, actually.

3D printing? I've heard about that before, but I supposed it was very expensive. Good Smile Company is already producing some anime figurine prototypes using a 3D printer, but the finish work is still done by a sculptor http://ameblo.jp/gsc-mikatan-e/entry-10743514716.htmlmoooV wrote:I've started thinking about this: "There are 3d printing services in my city, which are relatively cheap".
So you intend to order some 3D copies of your rendering and sell them to your fellows here for an exorbitant price, isn't it?

No, it is not stupid. No way! It is a question of coherence (or consistency, as you said). It would be schizophrenic to have half a collection western reading and half eastern reading.Dream wrote:Glénat keptit for Gunnm Last order for consistency sake with the former serie. which is, imo, pretty stupid. They should publish GLO non mirrored and republish HFV in the original order, like Viz did in the US.Sergio Nova wrote:No, it is not stupid. No way! Right now I have in my hands an exemplar of Glénat Spanish edition of Tokio Style (Hataraki Man, by Moyoco Anno) and the quality is pretty good: dust cover, colored pages, good paper and not mirrored. Much better than the Brazilian average manga editions. They don't publish the French editions like this? Or perhaps you're just asking too much...

If I understood well, when it became a rule not to mirror mangas in France, they had already stated publishing GLO.kamugin wrote:

Glénat Spanish? Does that exist?kamugin wrote: Right now I have in my hands an exemplar of Glénat Spanish edition of Tokyo Style

So, "the former series" must be HFV.Dream wrote:Glénat keptit for Gunnm Last order for consistency sake with the former serie.
Yes, it does exist: Glénat.Es, like Panini(an Italian publisher) Brazil.Glénat Spanish? Does that exist?
