Michael Bay would be good for Alita, I aint trolling

I would like to see a Battle Angel moving picture show.

People who say stuff like "Hollywood will screw it up", or "I always like the book better than the movie", great. Stay out of it.

This post is for people who want to see a big tent-pole Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita moving picture show. (I honestly think "Gun Dream" would be the coolest possible name.)


I think the coolest moving picture incarnation for this intellectual property would be...drum roll...

HBO Series, directed/produced by Michael Bay, Executive Produced by James Cameron.


First things first,

I.

1) It seems reasonable to guess that James Cameron has optioned the film rights to BAA . A common publishing/copyright agreement would be that every couple years it is renegotiated that Yukito gets some money for the movie NOT being made. A friend of a friend, plus listening to a lot of legal entertainment podcasts puts my guess at the payment for not making a baa movie at around 100k-1m per year, which is well within JC's means.

2) JC spent some money on BAA concept design. His main Avatar producer talked about it and it has been discussed around here in non nda busting terms. If you worked in Hollywood around 08, everyone knew someone who worked on something related to Avatar, and those guys said that the BAA stuff looked cool.

3) Avatar was a Big Deal.

4) Avatar is getting its own portion of Disney World.

5) Avatar 2 and 3 will be a big deal and they will keep JC busy through 2017.


I think James Cameron has and will continue to forget about Battle Angel Alita. More importantly, BAA has grown WAY beyond rollerball. Rollerball is lame compared to the last 10 years, let alone "Alita, Tuned Agent of Tiphares"

II.

"Game of Thrones" is awesome.

"The Walking Dead" is awesome.

The NPR film critic's year end synopsis said something to the effect of, "movies are kind of weak when compared to the best on TV right now. No 2-3 hour movie in 2011 was as riveting as the last 3-4 episodes of "Breaking Bad"."

TV is cool and getting cooler. Game of Thrones will probably blow minds away and apparently the location shots this season cost a LOT. The FX budget isn't on par with a Transformers flick, but it is still pretty expensive and there has been rumors for some time that they have shot/are shooting two seasons at a pop.

Michael Bay publicly dragged his feet on Transformers 2,3 and now 4. The guy is sick of that crap. I know people here are going to bash Michael Bay, or say that Neil Blomkamp is better, or say that some other director is cooler or better for it. I hate the Transformers too, but...

Michael Bay would be the right director for a "Gun Dream" HBO Mini Series, if he was reigned in by James Cameron. Michael Bay is part owner of the VFX studio that James Cameron part-created, that did some of the fx on the Transformer movies that is currently going through a rapid expansion (Digital Domain), that might lend itself to the economic feasability of a HBO series' budget.

Gally would probably get stretched out to a leggier taller height, or maybe not?

In conclusion, I think James Cameron is too busy. I think Michael Bay after 2 more years in Transformer world, plus 2 more years of really kick ass TV production, might be ready for something different. He can't make something "bigger" than Transformers, so maybe a next level TV production might be in line. He owns the next level VFX company that would be the ABSOLUTE SINGLE BIGGEST HURDLE to a BAA production, which would help defer the cost. And I think James Cameron and Michael Bay like each other because of the way JC talked about him in a bunch of 3d interviews.

I am not against the idea of live action. I am simply against some criminals who like to destroy great works, pretending to be more creative than the original creators. Have you seen V for Vendetta? That is my fear.

A good team supposed to respect the original work (as in 300) is indeed an interesting promise. Many here have complained that 300 is a sort of copy-and-paste adaptation. That is exactly what I ask - cut-and-paste like Sin City and 300 (or did you really like Hellblazer?). Any sort of "adaptation" (urgh) would be a crime against a masterpiece.

If it will be presented in theatres or on HBO screen, it is indifferent to me.

Actually, a series on TV would possibly be a better work, I think.

I haven't seen any Michael Bay movie but I saw rewies about the (filmbrain) , and the point they always complain about is the one dimension characters. And this is something it can happen to Alita half the value of the story cames from the characters. The thing I'm most afraid even in the case of James Cameron doing the movie.

I agre that a series would be better, but I would prefer a complite CG no humans , for me Alita has a face and I don't whant to see someone else. Even if after is modificated by CG , and don't know other but I can see the actor under the CG face ( like in Avatar ).

I thought "V for Vendetta" wasn't that bad, and the comic never grabbed me. I love the "Watchmen" movie and the comic, but the changes for the movie were an improvement in my mind.

No way could BAA support a film production adaptation like 300 or Sin City. BAA's basic DNA is manga/anime. That would really pigeon hole it as a japanese/anime production, which seems to be "maxed out" in the American film distribution model. As evidence of this idea I offer up Naruto. There is NO WAY the Naruto movies couldn't make a buck in american movie theatres, yet they don't even try...I would put every penny I have into promoting the Naruto movies in the theatres, and expect a large profit, but maybe Hollywood knows something I don't.

As for an all CG TV production...Star Wars: Clone Wars is the only comparable production to that end. I wouldn't be surprised if that show was barely breaking even, and probably not at all without the Singapore government subsidies. I think it only works as a Star Wars toy ad, which can't be compared to anything else.

There have been on again/off again rumors about an all CG Heavy Metal with Blur studios...but I don't expect to see it. In america, which will dominate global film distribution for a long time coming, probably, cartoons are mostly for kids.



a celebrity's face is a great bankable thing. Christina Ricci would be a great Battle Angel Alita, if she doesn't get too much older. I could see Bradley Cooper as an awesome Desty Nova.


I love to hate on Transformers movies, but everyone should see them, just to see what is technically possible with film visual effects these days. They are dumb, but they deserve a look, if only as a tech demo.

I think the Rollerball finale is some of the greatest action ever drawn. Transformers staple, slow-mo, kung-fu sequences are the only things I can imagine that represent how it would look in live action.

@Martin I belivce youi have good idea regarding the movies, exept for the TV show there is no need to be as bad as star wars. This depends on how much money you put in , if youy give the job to a big comapny like madhouse , I.G. product you can get a really good job. When I think of Alita movie I think of the short "Rosa". Let's simplify: V for Vendetta, the film, is a completely different story, with a completely different narrative, and a really different environment. The character Eve Hammond is not the same either. Even if it were a great movie - it isn't - it cannot be considered a copy-and-paste - far from that.

Of course opinions differ, and I have presented mine. I love Gunnm, and I don't want anyone who intends to be more creative than the original creator, and I don't want characters like Daisuke Ido, Desty Nova, Cærula Sanguis Aga Mbadi etc to be changed. It is simply that.

My old buds @ Fox tell me that there really has been a dynamic investment for the 3-D rendering and SFX and it would be throwing away money, (Lots and lots fo money) to Not Do Battle Angel. Part of the delay has been waiting for enough theaters to convert to the digital format and being networked. His computer gurus plan on not allowing any piracy of this work, because there is no film to steal. Last I hear is the actual rendering system to be used. I seem to remember that "TWO SCAN LINES" are about the thickness of a human hair, now consider what it takes to render one frame. They have closed any info at all on whos Super Computer Network they intend to use to render all this. Interesting Stuff.

could work fine. the manga already reads like a big 90's movie with pretty boys. I'd watch that.

My problem with Gunnm movie is the plot and the time to expand it. even if you compress everything to get several volumes per movies, that would still be too much;
a serie with 40 minutes episodes would work far better.

as for Bay, well, dunno. Transformers was terrible. and it's not even the cheesy plot and over the top action. it was the way things were told, and how they were filmed. I wouldn't want Gally to be part of something like that. Gunnm movie needs fluidity, and it's a thing I just can't see Mr Bay doing well atm.

I noticed too that with the examples I pointed out and with the other films that Bay has directed that there tends to be some sort of romantic relationship involved to draw in the female audience. Since there is a female lead in Gunnm this likely helps out, but Hugo's death would not make a first movie have the happy romantic ending that people would be expecting and Figure comes in much later.

I saw all three Transformer movies and all three were movies you shouldn't think about, just watch.

Ok Cameron will probaly make an Battleangel movie in the future after the next 2 Avatar movies.

What i would want to see the most is a real good Anime series, produced in japan. No crap that is produced in the US.

As far as I have seen, it is, even because live actions movies (Avatar included) use a lot of CG.

Sounds like a complicated mess. But my biggest concern is more with the realism of the acrobatics involved moreso than expressions. I guess I'd rather see something cool than pretty regarding Alita.
