Polish deluxe edition of GUNNM

Post by Guile »

Hi there,
I'm a veeery longtime lurker that decided to finally make an account here. Been a GUNNM/Alita fan for almost 15 years now. Unfortunately only the first series was ever released in my country but since Alita is comming to the cinemas polish publisher decided to publish reedition of first GUNNM and after that Last Order and Mars Chronicles. All of them will be released as deluxe editions with harcover (paperback is also availible). Since I got the first volume of GUNNM in deluxe edition I wanted to show you how it looks. Enjoy. :)

You should've posted this in the manga section, maybe then someone would notice it earlier than a couple of months later. :P

I dunno, I still think that the new edition could be better translated, but hey, I can't say no to any edition of Alita, not to mention finally being able to look forward to getting LO in Polish (would be nice if they published the first volume this year, though I'm not counting on it). I've been waiting for this for almost two decades, so they better not mess up my boy Sechs's lines!

...now if only somebody would publish Trigun and Houseki no Kuni in Polish...

Good to know about this one. We need more mangas translated in Polish. Not everyone knows Japanese.

Haha, definitely! It's nice to see more and more great or even just decent classics being picked up by the Polish publishers, though IMHO there are still noticeable omissions when it comes to both older and newer series.

looks nice.
i gather the timely release of this edition coincides with the movie release. It is nice to see that the movie made it possible for new people to enjoy the original work.
One thing I notice is that The polish edition kept the the American Name "Alita " rather than the original "Gally" which I understand, for marketing reasons, though I think it's a pity.
Is this Gunnm's first edition in Poland? or has this always been this way? I really wonder which name is most widespread? is it the original or the American?
Et le coureur à bout de force ... fut accuelli par une tempête de tollés!!!

I don't think it'll be this year. 3rd volume is already delayed so it'll be good if they finish HFV this year. I hope that next year we will get it already.

Also, hi Nina, it's been a while since we last spoken to each other. I'm Roger btw but I think you already know this. ;)

You're exactly right. Even logo is stylized to look more like the one in the movie. ;)

The name choice is a pity but it's not only the movies fault. This is a second edition of the polish GUNNM manga. The first also used the name "Alita" for Gally since Battle Angel Alita OAV was more known name than GUNNM. Since the movie also used Alita it was a no-brainer for the polish publisher to keep using this name. Also photos of the old polish edition are also there in the first post. ;)

Yeah, at this point I don't expect them to start releasing LO this year. It's okay, though; I've waited so long that I might as well wait a little bit more...

And of course I know, I remember your first nickname way better than the other one. And you can talk to me via, say, FB whenever you want. ;]

To be fair, I think that Alita is a nicer name than Gally (and it's an interesting reference, too!), so I've never minded this particular change. And I've always liked both titles - that is, Battle Angel Alita and Gunnm - equally. Though the former might be preferable when you want to recommend this series and want the other person to be able remember and write it down easily instead of asking "what was that word again? Gundam?". :P

On a side note, I'm not sure if I prefer the new translation over the old one. Maybe it's more faithful, but it lost some of its spark. I miss some peculiar lines, like "koledze Ido się zmarło". Glad I own both versions. On the other hand, now it's easier to coax my mother into finally reading more than one volume, since the new version is bigger and easier to read for someone who feels visually overwhelmed and tends to lose track of speech bubbles whenever they try reading comics.
