Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Here you will find a snapshot of the translations in progress.
When sufficient changes have been made i will export those to the ISO and post it here.
Every alpha build will have a version number and a date stamp
Current snapshot:
Ok the new ISO build v0.11 Alpha is done!
Some patch notes:
- Since scriptwise its fully translated i wont call it a "demo" anymore. So a new higher version number.
- Consider the translation still ALPHA. Although I've done a re-read of the last 2/3 of the game and it reads pretty good. The first 1/3 will get another re-read pass and patch.
- No windows patch program due to my patch data now exceeding the ISO size due to different ISO mastering tool. I might start fresh from the original ISO.
- I've used a different program called "mkpsxiso" to create the ISO since some people mentioned crashes. Not really sure where the problem lies, so lets see if this helps.
- Menu's, text alignment outside the scriptbox has not been touched yet since that requires debugging and code rewriting, so its on my ToDo list.
- I need quality checkers! People who play the game and report back any errors no matter how small.
- I need an end-game savegame to unlock the omake menu so that can be translated! Preferably a memorycard savegame from an emulator, but a savestate on ePSXe or other windows emulator will do as well.
On a sidenote: There is the issue of character/location naming that has changed from the early Viz printing to the original Japanese/modern Kodansha one.
Now they don't match perfectly or are completely different, so names are a bit all over the place.
I can however release a (Viz) version and a (Original/Kodansha) version of the game, so people can play it the way they remember the story.
That way the main protagonist can be called Alita in 1 and Gally in the other. The same for Tiphares/Ketheres as Jeru/Salem.
This would not be that difficould to make with a seperate database and a few clever search&replace commands.
Would people be interested in seeing either one or is this version good enough? Please discuss.
Enjoy!
v0.15 Another bugfix release.
Gone back to old ISO mastering as it gave problems and also a menu issue got fixed.
Fixed stuck menu's and fixed text-overflow issues by limiting the amount of lines per textbox to 4
Fixed loading issues and missing music.
v0.16 Yet another bugfix release
Fixed the untranslated ending
Fixed the Omake (Bonus) page although not completely done.
Fixed alignments of menu items and names.
v0.17 Yet another bugfix release
Fixed an error in my toolchain. This introduced ECC errors on the ISO.
v0.19 Huge update related to text translations.
Well this took awhile, but here's an updated version with A LOT of dialog fixes. This covers mostly the obvious errors and has some betters translations. I've also disabled the logins for the script editor. This means that editing the script is closed. If there are obvious errors, please post them here. I'm sure there are still quite a lot of wonky translations, but this is the best i could do. I'll probably be making the game a v1.0 final in the foreseeable future.
With this release i also changed the character naming style to the Viz release (time appropriate) So Gally -> Alita, Ketheres/Tiphares and Hugo.
I'll probably be making an updated naming convention for the modern naming as well (not that hard to make). Alita, Jeru/Zalem en Yugo. (modern kodansha naming style)
Expect both releases when it goes v1.0 Final.
Full ISO: https://mega.nz/file/CNpGWCJK#ZOtP0k7f0 ... RXNtDzIJDU
Smaller patch program:
VirusTotal scan:
The patch program is a small executable to patch the original ISO and from v0.15 Alpha up to current version.
The image underneath shows the DEBUG version where you can compare both translations and where in the translation database alterations can be made.
I am still looking for translators to refine the machine translations or fix obvious errors.
Even if you can do only a little, if you want to contribute, you are more then welcome!

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
First demo release is out!
The thread is now unlocked.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here.
With this first build, there are a few things you need to know.
Every Japanese symbol has the same space as a single character.
So atm there will be cramped places where a word or sentence will be difficould to write in due to space constraints.
The written dialog from the characters are an exception.
Not everything has been translated.
This includes menu texts and written dialog
The majority of work lies in the edting and translating of the game texts.
If you have some free time and are willing to help with this project then get in contact with me through the forums or email.
The tools to edit the texts are functional and working.
You can view a demo here: https://www.rippersanime.info/Gunnm_DEM ... P801_0.LDP

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Hey there ^^
Is this still ongoing? I tried playing this game in japanese many years ago and ended reading a small translated part of the end online, just to get a hold of a bit of the story.
I just want you to know that some of us are really interested in this project

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Well i've not updated the iso for awhile now.
Not many progress since last update due to other interests.
You are the first person to respond on this forum.
So at least i know some are actually interested in this iso.
Since the lack of user input and help i've put this project on the backburner a bit.
You know how it goes...i'll work on it THIS weekend...and then months pass.
So its not dead, just slow.
The tools are there, its just the will, time and need of help to get this thing done.
Also my "7 days to die" game addiction isn't helping

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
I noticed the lack of posts around here, at first I wondered if I was trespassing
Sadly I can't help with the translation, I can only speak French and English. I can most likely add the translated text to the .iso by following the instructions on your other posts (maybe I should read them again before saying that ^^ ) but that isn't much I guess...
I am willing to help, I have too much free time, so feel free to assign me a task ^^

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Thanks for the assist.
What i need is to match the moonspeak lines with the translation that youngred provided with the ones in the database.
Then its just a matter of finding the correct line and input the translation and format the line so the game prints it correctly.
Demo of the translation tool:
https://www.rippersanime.info/Gunnm_DEM ... P801_0.LDP
Youngred's translation:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1008
The text formatting:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1103
But most can be learned from what i already put in, see the demo.
I'll set you up with a login tomorrow for the real deal.

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Ah, I was missing the translation by Youngred.
Now I think I can do that, I'll start most likely tommorow.
Thanks for the instructions, we'll see this done

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Ok i have PM'ed the login.
First, everything is backed up up 4 times a day AND has an edit history.
So if you make a major screwup, there should be no problem.
[edit]
The search page i just hacked together but should work nicely.
That way you will know what LDP file contains certain word/lines and saves a lot of time.
I'll make it part of the main edit page soon.
<Already done!>
[/edit]
Now youngred's translations are incomplete since he hasn't been online in awhile.
So that is all we can add to the game for now.
I do have some other translations of the last part of the game. i'll add them later.

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Hello.
I just registered here to show you my appreciation of this project.
I found this place after I discovered the existence of the game (and a Gunnm novel apparently) from Gunnm Gaiden author commentary section (it finally was uploaded to bakabt recently).
In the following days I will look into available materials and what kind of work I can do to help it going.
My Japanese is only ground level basics (should do for matching lines), but I can also do various tech stuff.
-- edit --
Oh. If it stuck on the translation, then I can't do much. Probably it worth to look for help on mangaupdates forums or game translators forums.
In the meanwhile, I wonder if the resources and screenshots are ready and waiting for translators. There must be basic lines that can be done without deep language knowledge.

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Hi, even as a long-time fan of the manga I didn't know there had ever been a game made. Stumbled upon it today, and subsequently your translation project. With the release of the film, you might start seeing a lot more interest in this, so I hope the project is still going forward!
Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Hi, I am and old fan of gunnm/alita. After the new movie I discovered the new history and end change (last order + martian chronicles) as well as this videogame. You can see I was disconnected for around 20 years
I am a retro-gamer as well and just today I found this very interesting project. I can't help with Japanese translation but I can help with:
- Text formatting with the tool.
- Tool fixes coding ( I program in some languages).
- Possible parallel translation English to Spanish.
I have a family member in Japan but I don't thing she is going to help with translations ( anyway I'll try).
Thans for the current work, and I hope this grows fast, after the movie there are lot of people just knowing about the game.

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
I've got a physical copy of the game, so maybe if anyone wants some manual scans I could try to help with that and those could be translated.
Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
I'm extremely sorry for the lack of updates on this project (and generally the site)
It's been on the backburner for awhile now, due to reasons...
I really need to get back on track with this.
MagicHP has been busy putting what translations are available into the database.
However i need to sort out some things as well as modify the editing script some more.
@Killy. Basic knowledge is something.
If you are still interested then private message me for login details.
Machine translation can also be used for a rough translation.
I need to figure out how to add that to the editing script.
@Yandritos:
Help is always welcome.
Translators is the thing we lack, so it stalls on that department.
Also the whole raw data editing thing is written in PHP....messy PHP.
Private message me if you want to help out, i'll get you login details.
I'll go over the current work and see if i can make a new ISO.

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Just found this project after searching for translations of this game. I tried the demo, great work so far. I would love to see it updated. I have a great love for Alita and would very much like to be able to play this game. Keep up the good work. I wish I was able to help.
Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
@Vega2503 Thanks for the offer. However there are scans of the game inside the game archive provided on the DL page.
So unless its different art i think we are covered.
@AllisonByProxy Its a slow process. but with more people willing to help it should go much faster.
We still need translators!

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Made a few changes in the editor.
Look at the grid and legend button.
Also i'm almost done with a new alpha release.
Nothing major, just the new texts been put in and menu's translated.
I'm working on a TIM editor to make adding characters to the game more easy.
A TIM file is just an image of all the character and it differs on scenes due to the 1000+ japanese kanji symbols.
To save space in the framebuffer they only include whatever used kanji in the texts.
Only bare bones roman letters and some symbols.
Editing these files is a real pain in the ass due to the way they cleverly make 4 layers of 1 color images fit a single 4 bit palleted image

I'm also grateful for the update
So glad to see that you're still working on the project.
I know it may take some time, however, I'm very hopeful that it will be completed.
I've tried the demo ISO. It was so good to see the translated text within the game, showing that it is achievable
I haven't any help to offer...I don't think
Sorry.
I did play the game through to the end, back around 2003/2004.
I read a volume, played to that point in the game, then read another volume and played to that point.
And so on, to help roughly follow the game. I also used a guide to help with the menus etc.
I seem to remember not knowing which upgrades to select/buy and use. T'was frustrating.
I tried to play this again now, and it doesn't seem that I have the same patience that I had then
So, I'll eagerly await for this projects' completion

New snapshot out.
Nothing too fancy as i've been more busy writing tools to edit the game.
All new contributions have been put inside.

Wow this project is amazing. I just want to thank you for doing this. Keep up the good work.
Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Update:
Modified the editing tools some more.
One of the biggest and best change is the change of character spacing.
With the same box there is now room for 33 characters instead of 25 on each line.
Text looks better, and sentenses can be written more coherent.
This DOES mean that all the translated text has to be reformatted.
I've started on 801 and 7_0 7_1 to give you an idea.
It is basically adding or changing the -{WS33xx}- tag and adding directly after that the mandatory -{BL1216}- tag for character spacing.
Then just remove the hard returns -{//}- and reformat the lines.
It is really easy with the preview window on.
There is also a new grid in place so you can see the new text sizes.
Also i've added a duplicate detection thing that finds exact duplicates or those off by 5 characters.
Like those choice menu's where the arrow is at a different place.
This helps in easy copying over one translation to all the other scenes and to compare the translations for differences

Hello! I made an account here just to say thanks for doing this translation. You have me and 3 other people really hyped to try this out when its done!

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Good day!
Came across this site on reddit while searching for an English translation. I’m a huge fan and would love to see this project completed. Due to work constraints and life I can’t contribute as a translator, however would you ever consider setting up a moneypool via PayPal for those who would like to contribute that way?
I’d be more than happy to show support that way with the occasional donation to entice translators to provide assistance. Please advise at your earliest convenience if this is a possible consideration. Thank you!

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
A bit late of a reply, sorry about that.
I'm not currently interested in setting up a moneypool of sorts.
Mainly because of the way my site has operated all these years.
0 ads, 0 moneymaking and everything on a voluntary basis.
I used to have a paypal donation link, but have removed it as it was collecting dust for years.
The project is running slow but fine atm.
I should post a bit more here, or open up the discord channel to the public.
But that might clutter up the place, so i'm not sure if i should.
Still, thanks for showing support for the project.
Always good to hear people are interested in seeing this game get translated in English.
Also a new iso is in the making fixing the menu translations and other things

Re: Most current Alpha version of the ISO
Some news
Well the technically part of translating the texts is going slow but good.
I managed to find a lot of code that could easily be changed to fit the new translations.
The menu's should be working nicely now.
Translationwise we are still looking for volunteers.
Our main translator has resigned, so i have put up the wanted ad again on romhacking.net
For a new preview of the game iso see the first post
