One crazy idea. Owen Wilson as Jashugan!
That would be his first serious role?
But he needs to be working those muscles.

I thought about it, but he's not suited for this role. His nose especially.

You are already planning for the forth or fifth movie :D
Actually, I do believe that Cameron will make a salad, cutting many parts of the story and putting everything in 100 minutes. Thus, you can imagine that Mbadi could be presenht as well.

Oh yeah... Dafoe would make a great Nova.

Only Matthew Modine is still my No. 1 choice for Ido.

Older now, but still has those eyes and elongated face.

SLJ would be a TERRIBLE Vector.

Vector is a sleazebag - not a badmotherfucker.
Trader, traitor, lier and a cheat - not a Mace Windu or Nick Fury character.

As for Denzel... naah... when was the last time he played a cold and calculated badguy? Few badguys he played are anything but cold. Too passionate.
Plus... Mbadi should be imposing and "exude presence".
Denzel is too small for that role and needs to talk to make his characters work.

Fishburne would be a MUCH better choice but he is kinda cursed with the Matrix. He would be Aga Morpheus to everyone.

Why not Erik Per Sullivan then?
Has about as much in common with Jashugan as Wilson does.

Oh... and... just to mention it... Jashugan and Shumira... Kinda dark skinned characters...
Definitely not Caucasian.
thierry henry as Vector
Why?
Not even is NOT an actor - but he also does not act.
crazyankan wrote:Ellen Page as Alita
Ummm... no.
Summer Glau as Alita
I would like her to be used for motion capture, she did ballet for years - but she is too big for that.
As for acting... Her characters are mostly dead-eyed.
Alita is much more alive than that.

Jashugan and Aga Mbadi aren't (how do they call them) afroamericans. I suppose they both looks more like indians (the guys from India). Mbadi is indian - that's 100% I'm sure. Jashugan & Shumira... Spain, Egypt, Gypsy would be the best place of origin.
So Morpheus isn't a best choice at all.

If we look at his name Aga Mbadi should probably be somewhat Arabic.

Jashugan and Shumira...
Well... I am not sure that we can be talking about country-specific origins here. There WAS the end of the world and all...
At best, we could be talking about races and cultures. Cultures outlive states and countries.

At best we can judge them is what we see from their looks.
They are brownish. And blond. And that leaves us wit couple of choices of genetic origin.

Well yes, she fits... But for TV series, not a movie.

More importantly, does she speak English?
Since it is an American production, I will assume an asian actress is out of the question... :( so I'll limit myself to English speakers.

Both Ellen Page and Summer Glau were mentioned earlier, but I'd have to shoot down both. Page is certainly feisty enough, but physically she doesn't fit the profile. I actually like Glau. Certainly, her roles have been more of the "slightly off" and "crazy" variety but the first episode of the Sarah Conner Chronicles proves she can play a normal warm human being. Also, her background in ballet could lend beauty to Alita's killing techniques.

So why would I shoot her down?
Simple, there's a better candidate: Jessica Alba
1. Dark Angel a.k.a. BAA lite means she has experience in post-apocalyptic bio-punk
2. She worked with Cameron on aforementioned series, and he has a tendency of hiring the same people for multiple movies. See "Recurring cast members" on his wiki page for a table.
3. In an interview about the movie, he said:
Marquee names or just unknowns?
Cameron: They won't be unknown. They'll be very recognizable names, but I don't see this as a star vehicle per se.

Jessica Alba is very recognizable, particularly in the somewhat nerdy sci-fi sect who will gobble this movie up like cake. See #1 for reasons why it would not be a star vehicle.

4. She certainly has the necessary "body type." Enough said.
5. She's damn cute

1) Summer Glau - ~20% similarity, definitely not her.
2) Alba - more definitely not, face is somehow opposite.

Whenever I think of a real person as Alita, I think of Toni Halliday (lead singer of Curve). Unfortunately she lost her black hair and she's older now, but these pictures managed to convince me a couple years ago.
And yeah, she'd probably never end up acting...but it's nice to imagine, no?

Besides dressing like Gally-Alita, Kate Beckinsale's fighting style is pure Panzer Kunst.

I was thinking the same thing. The first time I saw that cover I thought: "Hee, Alita". And while the movie is about vampires and werewolves, it somehow has a Gunnm-ish atmosphere (perhaps because of the main heroine (not the drug)).
