PS.
I've bought another 6gb, everything works fine now.

I've completed the geometry. At all. This part is done.

Here's the first image of the thing fully done (without hair) from the back:
backblue.jpg
So, in the queue on my server are: front+blue layer, front without blue, back without blue - a day of rendering each. They're completed, the only thing is to wait for the calculated image.

The next one will be this (about a week of calculation):
posture12.png
Then the turnaround, and the thing will be done. Then I'll think about using it in the images of the chapters I've chosen.

It's not as much left to wait, as it seems.

The same, but without a blue layer - "classic".

I am glad that you did not abadone the project :)
However, do you still intend to keep Alita's face realisticly human?

Yes, I do - that's why I've started the whole thing.

Arrrgh!!!

It was calculating for two weeks, and finally died with just 12.8% done.
I'm really desperate, I'll try to do something with the hair - it demands too much resources. Also, about a month for a small image is over the top. :x

Here's the failure:

I've rendered a sequence for an interactive turntable.

PS.
I've used a free hosting, just because I don't want to use my production server for this. There is no need to.

The model's body is ok but the face doesn't resemble Alita's face. Alita's eyes are bigger and she have the famous octopus lips.

The image with the new hair is still calculating, so I've made this in some of the free time:

Hm, I kind of like the pattern and it feels as if you could almost touch the blade. However (big however): it looks like liquid metal was cast into this form. But as you know a blade is forged by folding, down beating, folding the steel again and so on. This looks like cooled-down lava, not like 200 layers of folded steel.
Also, a tiny beauty-aspect: in the holes you can see the middle line and thus you see that its mirrored. Maybe you can tune that.
(And yes I know she forms it out of her body anyway ;) [using the material from her boobs])

I know about holes - that's a bug. However, I'm lazy to fix it - it won't be seen in the composition, so I'll simply try to get away with it.

What about the metal - I've looked at a lot of references. Also, I've borrowed a real damascus knife (not a big one though) from a friend for a day (in several days I'll make photos, if he lets me).

It is real, and not a fake - guy is a military, and he has illegally brought it here a week ago from Sudan. The price was about 1500$ for a 10 centimeter long knife.

What about holding it and touching - it feels bumpy, really bumpy, as if it wasn't polished at all. Also, it's surprisingly heavy.
You will laugh, but a real damascus feels just like you said about liquid metal. I've had an idea about decreasing the bump amount, but I've just preferred to be close to the material I've had in front of me.

At least, there is no information in the manga about blade's surfacial roughness, only about it's pattern. Also, it won't look so pronounced from a distance (for example, if it's held by Alita), so it'll be ok, I guess.

PS.
When I'll get the photos of a real thing, I'll post them - surely.

[quote="moooV"]I've rendered a sequence for an interactive turntable.

Image leads to a page with a flash turntable (minimum screen height is 800 pixels). It loads all images (100 of them) quite long, then it's spinable.

Can we save that?

So your Alita will remain bald?

No, she won't be bald. It's a preview turntable - there is no hair, because it would take too long for them to calculate.

Next turntable will be absolultely the same, but with the hair.

Yes, you can save that, but there is no need to - there is going to be a version with the hair soon.

I was lazy to explain how to do it, so I've just packed everything and archived.

You can download it, unpack it, and open the page in your browser - everything will be fine.

By the way, I'm just using a free turntable player from here: http://www.artstorm.net/plugins/turntable-flash-viewer/.

Many thanks, but your file is set to private so I can't download it.

Very nice texture you added to her balisong, the handles feel very realistic.

very nice! I like your sculpting of the body. only thing I dislike is, how her eyes look. kinda not gallyish imo. not cat like enough I think.

Excellent job! I've been meaning to model Alita too, though I've gotten myself tied into so many hobby projects I really haven't had the time serious 3DCG requires. Yours is stunning good work, but if I may suggest, the facial features are a bit too adult, the eyes could be a bit larger and shifted lower. *edit* not as much as to make her look manga-like. More like Christina Ricci or Katie Holmes or Summer Glau type proportions. The Damascus blade looks perfect.

You said you used Z-brush, do you have other 3D packages?

I've made them asian, not cat-like or manga-like. Also, I'm making a GLO version (v1-10) - she looks completely adult there. Moreover, I'm trying to make a something close to a real human facially - that was the whole point of the project!

I've watched about 100 000 photos, chosen about 5000 of those looking close to Alita, categorized them, studied them, and came up with the idea how this thing should look. At least, facially.

That was the aim, not the modeling or anything else. At least, now I know how she may look in a real person equivalent.

However, the face still isn't close enough to what I want her to look. Anyway, I won't change it further - consider it done and decided.

Vendigo wrote:You said you used Z-brush, do you have other 3D packages?
Yes, I use a lot of stuff:

ZBrush 3.5r3 - detalization
3ds Max 2011 - lowpoly modeling, lowpoly unwrap, materials, scene, rendering (mental ray), everything else - the main application, generally
UV Layout pro - unwrapping complicated objects
xNormal - baking textures
Photoshop and Inkscape - textures. Yes, most of them are vector-drawn manually.
Composite 2011 (previously known as Toxik) - pass composition, post processing, output

I didn't want to make this topic as crappy as the previous one, so I'm showing the ZBrush screen only when everything is already decided, done as perfect as possible, and I'm not going to return to that step.

The template painting - the hardest part, I'd say that it's insanely hard - I've redone it more than a hundred times!
The problem was that YK's detail lines look good only in 2d. In 3d using the same marking breaks everything and looks bad from different angles.

So, a most of the details on the model are my improvization, while still trying to stay as close to the original as possible.
zbfinalpaint1.jpg
zbfinalpaint2.jpg
zbfinalpaint3.jpg

And here are the highpoly details in big resolution.
Only one half of the model is detailed, because it's perfectly symmetrical and there is no need to do another part - the details will be simply mirrored in Max.
