You can memorize kana overnight if you put some dedication in it. You just need to practice it later on so you don't forget the characters.

kanji is more difficult but basic and often used ones (like ichi, dai) can be memorized quickly. I'd recommend a good kanji dictionary though, JWPCE has a very useful one built-in.

After that you just need to learn the grammatical syntaxes and what each word means in japanese (which can be tied into learning kanji anyway).

It can be most definetaly done in way less then 6 months. Of course you would still have problems with all the honorific tones and such, but you would be still able to roughly understand animes and mangas.

I myself rarely watch anime or read mangas and I still memorized kana just by sheer exposure to it. If I can do that with literally no effort, then a dedicated person can learn the basics of japanese in weeks, and after that its only a question of enlarging your personal vocabulary. If you just want to watch anime then you don't even need to learn too many kanji.

To be honest, a bit of both.

With some luck I will be able to tell out of experience too, in a half year or so.

Phase and chapter numbering arent in sync!
Chapter 48 = Phase 46
Phase 48 = Chapter 50

To confuse people...
