I still think Cameron won't be able to resist basically co-directing Alita: Battle Angel. He'll want to make sure it's as awesome as the movie he's had in his head for so many years.

Or at least that's what I hope.

As of now Rodriguez hasn't really explained why he wanted to make this movie other than that he'd learn how to implement all the bleeding edge tech that Jim uses.

I just hope RR loves it as much as Cameron loves it.
He wanted to give his Avatar movies full attention, but since the time between them is so long, and the additional scripting is not written, a lot of public interest has faded. Mind you a lot of production has already taken place in parallel with Avatar, so the current status is unknown. Originally he did want a late 2016 release date.

Once Rodriguez is much more film director than Cameron, I do hope he will only be the producer, letting Rodriguez work in piece, and then we will have a great film.

That is the difference: Rodriguez makes films, Cameron makes movies.

By the way: the release date is expected to be 20 July 2018, so I will have time to advance my Portuguese language version (the manga, I mean): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437086/
