Hugo in the movie?

Hey Guys,
New to the forum so apologies if I should've posted elsewhere for an introduction or whatever! Haha! Anyways, I'm super excited for the movie, so hyped up to see Motorball in live-action but judging from the trailer as well as the story synopsis said by Robert Rodriguez it seems like there's one huge difference between the movie and the manga and its the character of Yugo/Hugo.
Do you guys think he's still gonna meet the same end he did in the manga or do you think they're just gonna "Hollywood" it by making it end happily ever after? (I really hope it's the former and not the latter)

I think it might go for a different route as in this version alita's coach/trainer is Hugo, who teaches her how to play motorball, I don't think they'll focus on that tragic story from the manga.

Nice Avatar.
I don't think that they will change it. I mean, what will they do with not ending his arc in the same manner?

Even his motorball coach died. To be honest, I like that idea of connecting arcs. With combining character arcs, you will again more layered characters, with more importance and pacing aswell will be fine. Pacing was the thing I dislike about first arcs, because there was little build-up to some events. So yeah, looking forward to it. It still looks like it has too many characters, but It is the only "live-action adaptation" I care about, so I want to be optimistic.

Welcome to the forum!
I don't think they'll change Hugos fate. Maybe they'll make him last longer than in the manga (maybe his death won't happen in the first film), but they'll eventually kill him. One thing Cameron loved about the original anime was Hugo's death scene, I'm certain he even adapted it in Titanic, so it probably will be here too.

Maybe Hugo meets his end either directly or indirectly related to Zapan as I've read that they want to make Zapan more of a villain in this story compared to his representation in the first few volumes. I keep hearing Motorball is in it but it seems like a really odd thing to not put in the first look trailer but maybe it needed more time in the CGI oven. Regardless I am genuinely the most excited about this movie in 2018.

Oh jeez! That's true!!! I didn't even think about that! I mean regardless of whether or not it turns out I'm super excited for the movie and everything I'm just curious how they're gonna do all of this! Especially since it seems as if ajakutty might be taking the place of Jashugan(Unless if maybe Zapan ends up being the final enemy for Alita for the Motorball finals which would be pretty cool) but I guess I just found his story with his brother to be really touching but also somewhat necessary and I really hope they keep that in the film.

He probably just introduces her to some motorball people I guess?

Which is not the same as training her into it

Well he might just show her the basics or something. Either that or they might make the remodeled Hugo live a little bit longer and help her out in the motorball stuff, only to die later (which IMO would be an inferior story to the one presented in the manga).

That's true after all Alita's coach in the manga Esdoc or "Ed" was a cyborg who could compete with Jashugan a long time ago in the series and he is a cyborg as well. Speaking of which I don't think he will be in the movie given Hugo will take over his role. Hugo has two major role in this movie being a coach and stealing cyborg parts for money. I'm kind of concern this movie having too much ideas and no good usually come out of that.

I honestly feel like that's the case because according to one of the early story synopsis it said that Doctor Ido doesn't want Alita to recover her memories but Hugo is willing to help her by getting her into fights(Most likely motorball) in order to regain all her memories. I guess there's a rumor that Gerda would be in the motorball part of the movie which would be weird if it wasn't a flashback but I feel like it probably will just end up being a flashback.

Well Gelda could go 2 ways a flashback only or someone in a motorball race looks like her but different name because motorball person isn't from mars just similar looking plus michelle rodriguez gets 2 roles out of it so it could be interesting mind game by gelda lookalike for alita to "conquer" in motorball arc.

Honestly i'm very concerned about all this.
How can one movie cover 2 so distinct arcs? Providing it follows the manga, that's what should happen:
Alita is found in the scrapyard.
A backstory is provided for the city
Ido rebuilds Alita imposing an identity to her
Alita needs to find her own identity and explores it through discovering her martial arts.
Alita Face Makaku to esplore herself
Alita and Makaku find a contact point that help both of them progressing in self discovery even if Makaku dies immediately after.
And that's quite a movie already. BUT THEN.
Alita meets Yugo and finds out that life can give her more then just her identity through fight.
Alita finds out that yugo has an obsessive dream that can take him away from her.
Alita tryes to be part of his dream while she fears that their differences will keep them apart despite all
Yugo get destroyed by his own dream that proves an illusion
Alita try to save Yugo but Yugo is beyond saving and this smash her heart.
And this is another movie of his own. BUT THEN AGAIN
Alita gets involved in motorball
Motorball has to be introduced with a back story
A PHUCKING LOAD of new amazing character with deep motivations and intresting back stories is to be introduced, AMONG WHICH THE PHUCKING JASHUGAN WITH ALL ITS COMPLESSITY.
AL THIS IN 2 HOURS
ARE WE DAMN INSANE???????

It maybe the prequel novel & novelization will have a lot of stuff cameron might've had to cut from notorious fox executive interference (example Alien 3) because usually movie novelizations don't get prequel novels at all. I just hope james cameron has directors cut version on blu ray version in contract.

The Makaku part could easily be done within 30 minutes and as for the yugo/hugo thing it seems like they're combining both the yugo arc and the motorball arc into one. My theory originally was that Ajakutty would be taking the place of Jashugan(Because Ajakutty is in the cast list but Jashugan is not) or even that Zapan could take the place of him as well but some people are saying that Gerda might have a bigger role than just a minor flashback cameo so who knows.

Cameron is a fan of the series and I think he is a great director so hopefully he will do justice to the series, although of course I would much prefer something that sticks exactly to the manga story
