It is not funny, it is tragic!
Anyway, retarded people will always blame a manga, a film or even the Bible. It would be simpler if they could admit that have free will. A work of fiction is exactly and just that: a work of fiction.

Actually the story is not funny, but crazy.
Huang wont have any difficulties to plead insane! There is no connection whatsoever to Alita.
IMHO he is a hardcore Marxist trying to punish those owning property.

Marxist? Capitalist? Neither Marx nor Ricardo can be responsible for such insanities. There is no room to ideologic debates here, sorry!

I totally agree. Also, this isn't even a bit related to Marx, or even just materialistic phylosophy. Moreover, capitalism has nothing to do with it too.
Don't try to search for some underlying reasons in his actions, everything is obvious.
This guy is just a typical homicidal maniac, who wants to get away with it by blaming anything else (voices in his head, manga, movies, games - it does not matter) to be declared insane and then go to a psych asylum instead of prison.
This incident is really similar to a recent case of a slaughter in German [?] (or not, I don't remember what country exactly) school, when a guy blamed a "Postal" video game for his actions.
The only sad thing I see in this story is that this manga is involved in, newspaper articles will form society opinion about GUNNM negatively.
Nothing to discuss here anymore.

Actually this is hilarious. Hilarious because there is obviously no connection with Gunnm.

Worst part of the article is at the end where the PR pushovers at Tong Li publishing, the Taiwanese distributor for Gunnm in that region, says they will have their editors fine comb the manga to make sure such instructions don't actually exist. Pathetic.

I don't think that's pathetic at all; it's RESPONSIBLE. While it's very unlikely that anything resembling what happened is in Gunnm, it does two things: 1) gives confirmation to reassure everyone, including victims, that this guy was totally at fault and 2) it informs potential buyers that this manga doesn't condone this sort of violence in any way.
I don't now how insanity pleas work in Taiwan (if there is such a thing), but he'd have been better off just saying he blacked out or something.

I assure you it's a pathetic state of affairs on a societal level if that sort of reassurance is even necessary. C'mon. Seriously. How is that not pandering to the irrational, unthinking masses? Anyone with a clue knows there's no way the editors can predict the killer's psychology and somehow find the "trigger" hidden in the pages of Gunnm. If you were given that task you'd eyeroll it, wouldn't you? I know I would.
And let's just say for the sake of argument there were indeed some sort of cultist or subliminal message. This message activated one guy out of millions of readers? Or do you think we should expect a string of such killings in the near future? Some elaborate machination by our beloved, yet heretofore unknown Jacobi Mugatu-esque Mr. Kishiro? The trigger could be snowflakes for all we know.
It's nothing more than an excuse the killer's using to try and get out of jail and Tong Li need not have bothered to even entertain the idea. A criminal psychological profiler on the other hand...
