Clean up the naming convention
It has been ignored several times, because the topic has gone offtopic seriously, so I'm copying my post here:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't have anything against mirroring, as well as naming.
Moreover, I like non-original names more (Alita, Tiphares, and so forth). The only version of HFV I've read is mirrored and with non-original naming (I don't remember from where exactly, but I remember that the translator's name was Fred Burke - maybe, it's from this site's downloads section).
When I was reading the LO 1 and 2, I've had some serious confusion since the names are original there. It's done by another team (not you, guys), but I'd really appreciate if you changed it to conform to a non-original naming convention, since the LO version of this site's team uses non-original, as well as HFV.
Will you do it, guys?

Re: Clean up the naming convention
Let me tell you how I red your comment:
"I've been reading another Groups Scanlation with wrong Character naming in the past which, by now, has stopped working on Battle Angel Alita so I had to begin reading your Edits but all your Character names are done the way Yukito ment them to be which confuses me. Could yo please redo all the scans you've already or at least break the naming conventions you've decided on and do it the other way JUST TO PLEASE MY READING? Will you do it, guys?"

Re: Clean up the naming convention
Maybe, I've expressed the thought incorrectly, and I apologize.
But take a look at the idea:
I'm meaning that this site team's translations use non-standard names for all LO volumes. Thus, all LO volumes (and official translation of HFV) have non-standard names.
The only (and single!) two volumes, which use standard names are those made by another group.
I think, it might be good to make them all solid and continuous.
Right now they are "Alita" in HFV, "Gally" in LO 1&2, and then "Alita" again in ALL volumes after - only two first LO volumes form a gap.
I'm asking to go through the LO1&2 and simply change all names from original to non-original.
PS.

I was reading not a scanlation of HFV, I was reading an official scanned manga, downloaded from this site's download section (US version), which had non-original naming. For example, one of the volumes on official ISBN catalogue.I've been reading another Groups Scanlation with wrong Character naming in the past

Re: Clean up the naming convention
I don't get it, I mean changing the names in two volumes would be good for simetry but, oh well I found it innecesary. Futhermore I don't find "etic" edit the work from another scanlation group, it would be better is to make it again from the scratch but that takes too much time and again is really unnecesary.
Re: Clean up the naming convention
actually, the issue is more about using the name "battle angel alita" and calling her alita, while it's all only about Gunnm and Gally
tiphares ? excuse me ? ho, zalem right !
back in my days, i asked about that on this forum (should still be somewhere), and i got an answer like "US name is BAA, we keep with this", while it's a one-sided decision from the US editor, hence is worth less than horseshit.
truth is, everything should be redone and even the forum sections renamed, because we are just helping U.S. renaming of the world.
by the way, i curse the french GLO editor like every week or so, but Gally was always called Gally in french editions, since the very first beginning, even before the animated movie...
All in all, i can deal with it so i'm not preaching one way or another, i'm just happy to have my fix, even if some of the names are wrong
but since the issue got on the table again, i pull a chair and sit with this

My my, HumanRage, your post reeks of disrespect and arrogance towards the very group that gets you your "fix".
Re: Clean up the naming convention
Where the hell do you see disprespect and arrogance?
He is right for the translated names by US publisher, take it easy dude! You just have decided to keep it like this which is something we don't basically care so much as soon as we get a translation of the chapter. You should take it this way and not "give me my fix of today you basterds Americans!".
Maybe the request of moooV is a bit too much and if you buy the edited books you might not have those problems...
I already here moooV saying he prefers reading it on his computer!

Re: Clean up the naming convention
MangaProject translated volume 1-2 from Japanese to English.
Shades did vol 3 from the VIZ volume.
I started to "translate" volume 4 from an VIZ volume.
^Ripper helped me with volume 5 and 6(I think).
So when we finally had someone that wanted to translate for us, we decided to stick with the VIZ names because we started to use them.

You forgot to mention the extra stories. They were retranslated from Glénat's edition by Trebicyem and, yes, they keep the original nomenclature.moooV wrote:

Re: Clean up the naming convention
These aren't as relevant as LO 1&2.
So, what do you think - is it a good idea to make them all fit together or not?

It would be easier to scan Viz's editions.moooV wrote:So, what do you think - is it a good idea to make them all fit together or not?
Actually, I even bought extra copies of volumes 1&2. The problem, as I have already mentioned, is that I am the worst scan-operator on this planet (and I think that I would even win any competition including Mars, Venus and Jupiter).
Re: Clean up the naming convention
The volumes we already have are very good I think. The only thing I ask is to go through them and simply change the names without any other modifications - about 30 minutes of editor's time, that's all!

Re: Clean up the naming convention
by volume...
for it to happen, we shall collect the pages to modify, and repack the archives for them to be put online again.
since it's a community want, we should do the logistics, and with so much preparation they could only cry and gladly accept the task of editing that few pages ?
but thing of when Alitaaaaa name is yelled all over a page... that alone is half an hour to remove, and then one have to add the new name
definitely not 30 minutes at all !

Like you say, it's only a matter of lazyness.Sergio Nova wrote:It would be easier to scan Viz's editions.
The entire site is dedicated to "being true to the manga and its original work". Yet, you use names that aren't related in anyway to the original manga. What's the link between "Alita" and "Gally" ?
Time has never been a problem. During the hiatus, there was plenty. You could even change the names starting NOW, it would minimize the time it would take to change everything. If you're concerned about continuity, just make a sticky with the correspondences between JP/EN/ES/DE/FR names.
I usually don't like to brag about myself, but "time" has never been one of my consideration for cleaning... (to some impatients' regrets)

I agree entirely with you, but that is only my personal position. The site's editor decided that way, and I see no reason to open a conflict, so I follow the instructions. It is simply that.Lemonlol wrote:The entire site is dedicated to "being true to the manga and its original work". Yet, you use names that aren't related in anyway to the original manga. I see. Actually, this pronoun you has always been problematic. I invite thee to join my campaign in order to rescue the pronouns thou and ye!
