On the credits page we wrote:With phase 114 comes an end to years of releasing Gunnm - Last Order.
We got a mail from an editor of Kodansha asking us to stop.
So we will stop making our official releases.
A sad day for all of us...

We won’t however stop our translation/discussion/... of future chapters!
That is one thing they won’t take away from us.

So from all of us here @ rippersanime, thank you for supporting our releases all of these years.
This is not a goodbye, we will see you on the forum

What was a fear for years happened last week.
They asked us (politely i may add) to stop.
So politely, we will stop making our releases.
Translation/discussion/... will go on as usual.
So raw owners, import buyers can still enjoy our translations.
That won't change.
We just cannot make our official releases no more.

PS: Don't start a war over this. I'll post some other details later when the hate dies down a bit.

No, its because of publisher changes.
Viz didn't care, Kodansha is more strict it seems.
They (or at least one of the editors) check if a scanlation team exists on new projects they take on.
In turn they ask that team to stop the scanlation.

Damn, no! Almost all the mangas I was reading had their scanlations stopped!

Ripper, crazyankan and all the staff, thank you very very much for your hard work so far! I would like to thank my forum colleagues too, for their indirect contribution, interesting (or not) posts and enlightenment about Gunnm world. Let's try keep this forum alive like Ripper suggested. The first volume released in US by Kodansha, #16, will be out in 16 days (source Bookdepository).

Were it not for scanlations, I would have never even heard of Battle Angel Alita. Now I own every volume. Tis' a sad day.

It is a pity it is over. Anyway, let's try to be happy the way it is possible.

I agree entirely. Scanlation groups, besides being fans' action (or because of that) work as free divulgation. Unfortunately, some publishers are unable to see the obvious.

Party crashers, that's it. No wonder I dislike "official" localizations of stuff...

Anyway, the raws will still be seen here from time to time, right?

So... What's going to stop another group from just putting the translation onto the raws?

Too bad really. I'd bet that 90% of the people here buy the volumes anyway when they're released. Keeping up the scanlation is kinda free advertising...

THAT is a good question!!

I suppose they did that to not be accused of doing nothing if the sales are going down.

I don't know if you guys heard of that study about megaupload, where 2 independant persons revealed that the close of mega actually reduced the amount of entries particularly for non-blockbusters movies. Mainly due to free advertising by people who saw the movies on mega and telling friends and familly about it.

Same principle here. Get rid of this free advertising given by the scanlation groups and you kill slowly the interest of people who didn't know about this manga.

It happened to me lots of times that I looked randomly on some manga scanlations I didn't know anything about and I have now the entire collection of it... We can find thousands of examples like this.
Only the fans will remain, especially with that slow story telling we end up to.

But he DID say translations and discussions will remain. Only the releases are forbidden.

Someone is spying on us! Well, it is a public forum and at least they asked nicely. Lemonlol now has a permanent vacation from typesetting. At least RA is still open, we can be grateful for that.

And you are lucky, at least in Brasil you can import it from Asia or Europe, try to do that here and the customs will laugh at your face.

It wasn't the case regarding Alita, but most of the mangas I know, and buy, I know thanks to scanlators. Those people that work hard translating, scanning, cleaning, typesetting, proofreading, uploading, maintaining a site and/or a forum with no profit at all and working for years. Not rare the scanlations are better than official releases. Like the fansubbers, these people are the main responsibles for making manga and anime recognized and popular outside Japan. Thanks to these elite fans we become more exigent demanding very important changes like no more mirroring and the release of entire "bunkos" at once, not splitting them in chapters. My reverence to you all.

Now, being serious...

It's prefectly understandable that a publisher protects its properties from unauthorized reproducion, even if it is a case like ours. We are a little forum with a few afictionados (no offence meant ) who, i think, regulary buy gunnm issues when they are released in their countries, so, i guess, no actual harm is done to the publisher. As for myself, Gunnm is actually the only manga i still buy. Yet, i really wonder if they realize how f***ing slow and delayed are Gunnm's releases in foreing countries (do they even care?). As for Italy, we barely get a volume per year (actually 2, which is a japanese volume splitted in 2) and in the last issue we had Zekka and Sechs were still kicking each other's asses.. A community like this serves the only purpose of letting us keep reading the manga we anyway buy at a tollerable frequence (wich is still very slow, com'on, a bunch of pages ever 1 or even 2 months..)
