[T] Phase. 126 Alita Quest XV
[T] Death Checker Rules Explanation
At the start, there are 16 buttons (the number of waged people x2);
Of those, half are “lifesaving buttons” and half are “landmine buttons”;
When a “landmine button” is pressed, one of the persons dies at random;
Pressing one button within the time limit of 30 seconds and surviving all the 8 turns, clears the game (the number of turns is equal to the number of waged people);
If no button is pressed within the time limit, one person dies;
In the event that the player (Kaos, in this case) dies, it's game over and everyone dies;
In the event that the checker board is destroyed, everyone dies.
[T top left] THE AWAITED DEADLY GAME
[T] The buttons position are reset at every turn and arranged randomly again.
The buttons decrease only when either the “lifesaving” or the “landmine” ones are pressed.
[T middle left] IS IT POSSIBLE TO CLEAR
[T middle right] THIS HEARTLESS TRIAL OF LUCK!?

[T] Tankuer
[T to the right of Tankuer] In order to not have the traps discovered with psychometry, the board has been demagnetized.
[T bottom right] Although the Death Checker random generator apparatus uses alpha rays coming from radioactive materials, it appears that even if psychometry is employed it's useless.
[T bottom left] On the 5x5 checker board squares, up to a maximum of 12 peple can be bet.
Previously, Nova held more than 200 Death Checker observation experiments at Granite Inn.
Page 02
[T] Can he pass through this merciless Nova's trap......!?
[T] Kaos clears 3 games
[T] safely, with no one dying!
[ka] The problem is gonna be from now on...
[ka] In the next game, among the 13 buttons, there're 8 “landmines” and 5 “lifesavings”...
[fx] pant
[fx] hanf
[fx] hanf
[ka] The chance of survival is 38% circa...!!
[ka] If the game keeps going like this...
[ka] and if I were lucky to not press even one “landmine”,
[ka] the eight match will be 8 to 1...it'll come down to a 11% chance of survival!!
[fx] huff
[fx] hanf
[ka] It's impossible...It's nonsense...!!
[T] This manga is fiction...
Page 03
[no] I'll tell you some of this game tips.
[no] In Death Checker, if you try to make everyone survive, the survival probability will get lower, but...
[no] ...with moderately stepping on the “landmines”, your definitive survival probability will rise.
[no] Practically speaking, stepping on “landmines” for 4 turns will make 4 people die, but in the eight game the survival probability will go up to 56% circa.
[no] Naturally, since you can't chose to step intentionally on the “landmines”, things won't necessarily go well, but...
[no] ...since the keypoint and your top priority is your own survival, you shouldn't mind even if some dead result from stepping on “landmines”.
[no] That's the most suitable way of thinking about this game.
[ka] I...
Page 04
[ka] I request a change of rules!!
[fx] freeze
[no] A change...
[no] of rules!?
[ka] I'm your target, right!?
[ka] ...then,
[ka] stop involving unrelated people in your murder game...!!
[ka] Let's do a game between just you and me betting our lives...!
[ka] Have a showdown with me, Desty Nova!!
Page 05
[no] Uh uh uh...you don't get it, eh?
[no] The best of the Death Checker is that you bet the lives of other people...
[no] It's also a game to test your disposition as a leader.
[no] My profligate son who behaved as a wanderer until some time ago,
[no] has finally become the Surface leader and came to Tiphares...
[no] Well...
[no] ...I must put you to test
[no] as a “father”, right!?
[ka] What a pity...
[ka] I heard that you helped Alita go to Ketheres...
[ka] I thought that if you really had a change of heart, we could have cooperated...
[ka] Really, what a pity.
[no] A change of heart...? Let me see...
[fx] slurp
[no] I don't know anything about that.
Page 06
[no] My isotopes* adjust to the course of action after a copy is generated, but...
[fx] click click click
[no] ...it's not that I've changed, it's just that I've coped up with a changed situation...!!
[no] Well then, about the rule changing matter!
[fx] click click!
[no] I can't fall for your suggestion, but...I thought of a funny alternative!!
[no] I call it the “merciless button”!!
[fx] flash
[Note] The isotopes Nova are talking about here are not the physics isotopes, but the different Nova versions, like Porta-Nova and Super Nova. See Battle Angel Alita Last Order 61.
Page 07
[no] That red blinking merciless button it's a visualization of the “landmine button”!!
[no] The difference with the normal “landmine” one
[no] is that “someone will die at random except from you”!!
[ka] Someone except from me...!?
[ka] ...what the...!?
[no] In other words, it's your safety, a delicious button that can evade even total annihilation from an accidental but guaranteed game over.
[fx] beep
[no] Flan is merciless!!
[no] Well then, game four, start!!
Page 08
[ka] Ridiculous...! You want to make me into a murderer no matter what...
[ka] There're 13 buttons in total...excluding the “merciless button”, 7 “landmines” and 5 “lifesavings”...
[ka] A survival probability of 42% circa...
[ka] Hasn't the survival rate gone up from before!?
[fx] swuuuh
[ka] No...wait...wait!
[ka] Think well...you must think...
[ka] If I were to press a “landmine” and unluckily target me...it won't end just with my death.
[ka] The Game Over would mean everyone's death!!
[ka] If we all die here, it means that there would be no one to prevent Nova's misdeeds...!!
Page 09
[ka] There's a meaning if Nova made this happen now...
[ka] Taking advantage of Ketheres weakening, he probably intends to take the entirity of the Surface as a testing site.
[ka] I must hold him back from a situation like the revival of the Granite Inn terrors on the whole Earth no matter what!!
[ka] I must survive at all costs...!!
[ka] If...I pressed the “merciless button” for all the remaining games...
[ka] ...me and other three persons would survive for sure..!!
[ka] No, wait...why am I supposing to use people as cannon fodder...?
[ka] Even if I trust to chance, pressing a button would mean a game over probability of just 7.3%...
[ka] Then, I should bet on the 42% possibility to save everyone!!
[fx] tremble tremble
[ka] No, wait...By chance...
[ka] ...it could also happen that...
Page 10
[ka] Probability...is an academic theory, after all...
[ka] In reality, unprobable things occur on a daily basis...
[ka] Is it alright to entrust lives to such numbers!?
[ka] Chosing certain survival,
[ka] discarding a few lives...
[ka] Does hesitating on this button...
[fx] uuuuhrgh
[ka] mean that I'm immature as a leader!?
Page 11
[fx] Cliiiiiiiick
[no] Kaos, my son...
[no] ...you always disappoint me.
[no] Sadly for you, the button you pressed...
[no] ...is a “landmine”.
Page 12
[fx] boom
[fx] roll roll
[ka] Uaaaaah!!
[ka] Waaaah!!
[no] Was it Ido-kun the one who died?
[no] I wanted to try talking with him once more...
Page 13
[ka] He died!! Even though it was 42%, he died!!
[ka] I'm sorry...
[fx] drip drip
[ka] Ido-sensei...I'm sorry...Alita...
[ka] I don't know...What should I...do...!?
[no] Mwa ha ha, it can't be helped if someone dies!
[no] You should think about it positively, since thanks to his death, the chance of survival for the others has gone up!
[ka] I see...
[ka] In this game it's not possible to avoid that someone dies... That's the truth...
[ka] The very possibility to have zero dead was a trap!
[ka] Then...!!
Page 14
[fx] crock
[no] !?
[no] What on earth are you doing!?
[ka] ...this is punishment for my naivety.
[ka] A way to take responsibility for having stolen the life of a comrade...
[ka] There's no need to hesitate anymore.
[ka] Im'gonna survive absolutely.
Page 15
[ka] My comrades deaths won't ever be in vain...
[ka] I'll survive...
[ka] and Nova...I'll kill you!!
[no] Breaking one finger after another when your comrades die by pressing the “merciless button”...
[no] Good...that's good...
[no] As your dad, I wanted to see you strengthening your resolve!!
[no] Then, game 5, sta...
[x] Stop right there!!
Page 16
[no] IDO-KUN!?
[fx] tap tap
Page 17
[ka] What...!? Shouldn't Ido-sensei be...!?
[no] ...I see...
[no] Decoy Nova No.084...
[no] You guided him...!!
I've heard everything from this Decoy-kun.
It seems you've been doing some pretty awful things to your clones, eh?
[no] Decoy Nova is a copy of mine, but...
[no] ...in the end, it's an inferior version controlled by an intelligence lower than an average person...
Page 18
[no] Has someone even got the right
[no] to complain because I vivisected myself?
Page 19
It's true that I also was taken aback when the Decoys-kun
came to help me...
I probably did something terrible to him,
but thanks to that, I was able to outwit you.
[no] After carelessly killing some decoys during vivisection I became aware of the possibility that stray decoys could have been generated* somewhere, but...
[no] to think that they would have defied me in this way...
[no] is deeply interesting!
[fx] tap
[Note] In case of his own death, Nova prepared a regeneration system , “stereotomy”, stemming from the nanomachines he's equipped with. However, after the “Nova Hunt” from Nora and the others, he revised the system in order to even regenerate the Decoy Novas as a camouflage. See Battle Angel Alita Last Order 56.
Page 20
[no] Oops, don't come any closer!
[fx] tap tap tap
[no] If I press this key...
[no] ...it'll be game over and everyone...
[fx] tap tap
[no] ...dies...
[fx] crash
Page 21
[no] AAAAAAAHRGH!!
You've toyed too much with people's lives...
[T] A flashing iron hammer!!
I'm gonna make you repent...now!!
