could have been good, if :
- wasn't a gunnm ripoff
- all characters didn't had the same face
- the storyline was something else than "i know everything about you from even before the start and you are playing in the palm of my hand"
and the poor scan quality (some pages are to be read from left to right, others are in original way, very disturbing)
thanks anyway

Sirius Scars isn't on the same level as BAA that's true but your comments aren't fair. There are similarities but it is far from being just a BAA ripoff. The story grows better until the end and the characters appealing.
About the scanlation quality, that was an old one and it was a just one guy effort, take that into accout.

true, i wrote that in the heat of the moment, but this short serie can't compare with gunnm
truth is, aside from Eden, i can't think of any serious level SF manga nowadays, and Eden ended a few weeks ago...
if you liked gunnm, and the "do i have a soul if i'm a machine ?" problematic, you will like "Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex", a two seasons (2x26eps) + the movie "Solid State society" which closes the main storyline.
GITS in manga is crap, only 2x2 volumes with lot of panties and nonsense nude material... but the anime is far far superior to it, and created a new standard of its own. the whole universe of the story (political and technical) is very coherent, especially in how common people lives with that technology (in short : a cyber brain is common, which enables people to share memories, surf while standing still, have virtual meetings and such, and of course may allow your real brain to be hacked/fried)
in SF, coherency is THE thing, because it's how you can show a vision of the future, yet realistic and then go philosophical about what defines life
definitely a must of the must, and don't forget to watch the tachikomas short sequences after the ending credits, they are characters too, with a "ghost" behaviour (as in "soul")

I think I've already plugged it in another thread, and it isn't technically a manga (being of Korean origin), but Shin Angyo Onshi is hands down the best comic I've ever read. It edges out BAA in terms of art and the story being more tightly woven. It follows the story of an angyo onshi, or a special agent tasked with exposing and assassinating corrupt government officials in a setting similar to medieval Korea. The empire recently collapsed but this angyo onshi is still traveling as a promise he made to a late friend.
I think you can still read it at onemanga, or you can buy the volumes (I believe there are 30ish)

Hmmm, I'll look into this Shin Angyo Onshi.
For myself, the only Manga I find comparable to Battle Angel is Vinland Saga (which sadly is only available to me in scanlation).
I still follow Berserk, but it's become a soppy mess, what with his entourage of idiots.
Seriously though, give Vinland Saga at 1000manga, you will not regret it.

I have no idea about medieval Korea, but a man assassinating corrupt politicians in contemporary Brazil would transform Brasília in a desert.

Ghost In The Shell is well known among anime/manga fans. I own the original manga, US edition, and I have watched the first and the second movies. I only liked the first movie, the second one have lots of pretentious pseudo philosophical dialogue that makes the movie boring and slow, the final action sequence didn't pay the effort of watching the whole thing. Maybe I should give the movie another chance and watch the TV animation that was made later, but I never was a GITS enthusiast like some of my friends.

Generally I don't like manhwa (Korean comics) because they lack the substance that the mangas have. But I was presented to Shin Angyo Onshi when I watched its movie
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?sh ... e&aid=2190, I liked it and started reading the scanlations. The manhwa ended after 17 volumes, it was good you remembered me this series because I have to dowload the chapters I don't have yet and start reading it again.

I have contradictory feelings about Vinland Saga, it is an amazing historical series by the same creator of the also impressing Planetes
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=694. If you like good medival recreation and also the Vikings, you can't miss Vinland Saga, but Thorfinn, the main protagonist, is a big asshole and really pisses me.

The others I already knew, so I only checked checked these two. Interesting stuff this Dorohedoro, I'm reading it now, in spite of the art isn't the kind I like. Kilico's description remembered me Noir a bit, it's only four volumes long, so I downloaded them all already. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions! IMHO Non of them compare to Alita though. (Don't get me wrong i love Berserk and Eden).
A long time ago I would have described Alita as martial arts+Cyberpunk+Core. Nowadays its more martial arts+SF+botty humor+endless buildup. I really miss the blood & gore!
@HumanRage: Blame, Biomega and Pluto are really awesome and complete SF mangas.
Blame and Biomega are booth from Tsutomu Nihei who draws unbelievable well. As u may have guessed Yukito Kishiro and Tsutomu Nihei are my favorite mangaka.
BTW Gantz is kind of SF ,-)
I liked Appleseed too. Oh I nearly forgot the godlike Akira.
@Isidorios: I agree that Vinland Saga is great, but the last chapters were really slow. Some translation group was calling it farmland saga
Honorable mentioned and not comparable to BAA/LO:
I recently started reading Kamiyadori (

Boobies), which is great. Kamiyadori is about a crazy virus, which mutates the infected into diverse monsters, and a cleanup "police" killing them.
Crazy:
Homunculus, Uzumaki, Ultra Heaven
Fun:
Yotsubato, HEN (

Boobies)
Gore:
Koroshiya Ichi (crazy brutal)
Great Seinen:
Full metal alchemist (FMA), Vagabond
Kiseijuu, Manhole, Death Note
(not so good but fun) Beelzebub, Aiki (

Boobies)
one shot:
Alive (Tsutomu Takahashi)

Berserk
, excuse me, it is a piece of trash, only.

vacendek: FMA and Death Note(was reading that on my balcony a couple of hours ago) = shounen
I forgot to mention two great classics that I also have at home, Akira and Nausicaä!
Sergio: Berserk used to be a really great many. I really enjoy it because the artwork, fighting and huge swords. But I think it was after volume 24, it became crap

It used to be something special when a monster showed up, but now he fights 20 end-of-level-monsters every chapter =(

Actually, I gave up reading it from the beginning. Perhaps it gets better, but I cannot say. So, let me admit that I am possibly exaggerating.

If some of your intellingent colleagues like Berserk, don't you think you should re evaluate this manga? Or, at least, remain silent about the subject.

Thanks again for suggesting this manga, crazyankan. I'm reading vol. 9 already and really enjoying it! Unusual plot and fine dark humor

I love the artwork and the characters
The mangaka is a chick, Q HAYASHIDA was an assistant for Nihei when he did the Blame.
VIZ has started to releasing Dorohedoro =)

The artwork isn't the type I really like, but it fits perfectly with the story. I was suprised when I found the mangaka is a woman, but nowadays some of the best shonen and seinen mangas are written/drawn by women. I'm tempted to purchase the Viz edition, but I don't think I should since I'm already collecting too many mangas and figurines. Do you know if the Viz edition have the colored pages? I'm wish this manga could be released here in Brazil. Since Highschool of The Dead is being published here, it isn't that improbable.

Berserk is awesome! Only downside, new releases are scarce. I don't agree with crazyankan. Yes there are more monsters now, but that's cause the whole world changed. I really love the art. And the Kawaii versions (don't know how they are called) of the characters are so funny&cute.
Shonen and Seinen are booth for boys, but Seinen has more violence and is supposed to be for an older audience?
Is Zetman any good? I think i read some early chapters but it didn't catch me.
BTW: Maybe we should start a thread concerning places to download mangas.

vacendek: Zetman is OK.
But take a look at some of gantz_waitingrooms stuff, like desert punk. It's a funny action manga.
I am a huge fan of fighting mangas, like tough and hajime no Ippo. Everyone should read the last one that I named.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOO, SERGIO (and anyone who is a fan of Gunnm)....
I recommand that you see this clip:

It's almost 18 minutes long.
Hint: Gunnm and Berserk are mentioned. There are other people in this earth (besides this forum) that are fans of Gunnm.

Good reviews! The guy really knows its subjects, although I don't agree with the order, but this is just a matter of personal preferences. What makes me like BAA more than Berserk are the Yukito's remarkable knowledge of technology and martial arts and his unique artwork. But both mangas are monumental and anthological works, no occidental comics can compare both in deepness and consistency.

Other mangas that I strongly recommend you folks to read:
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=586
This manga is the "slice of life" type and have a clean and beautiful artwork. Through the eyes of the android Alpha we see the slow decadence of a dying world as the years goes by. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes misterious, but always enchanting this is my second favourite manga ever. All the 14 volumes are already scanlated and I'm collecting the japanese edition since it wasn't released in English yet.
Seizon - Life
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2806
This manga is pure drama. A man struggles to discover his daughter's assassin before the crime expires and the cancer kills him. A deep cut in the flesh, don't start reading if you are depressed.
Azumi
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=4757
Actually I didn't read this manga yet. I've found the raw scanlations of the first 6 volumes some time ago and really liked the plot and the artwork, so much that now I'm collecting the Japanese edition. It has no anime but two live action movies were released and are available here in Brazil on DVD, but the movies can't compare to the original manga. Ten children are trained by a samurai as skilled killers, soon only Azumi remains alive and she seeks vengeance for hers deceased friends and betrayed master. Unfortunately no group is scanlating this masterpiece

A little bit perhaps, but it was't me tho one who provided the link for the review.
There are other people here demanding you to start reading Berserk!
