Here in São Paulo many people buy the original Japanese edition. Fortunately I have subscribed and mine is always reserved, otherwise I would have to fight for a spot.

Good reviews! The guy really knows its subjects, although I don't agree with the order, but this is just a matter of personal preferences. What makes me like BAA more than Berserk are the Yukito's remarkable knowledge of technology and martial arts and his unique artwork. But both mangas are monumental and anthological works, no occidental comics can compare both in deepness and consistency.

Yes I kind of did want to provoke.... but just a little bit.

Dorohedoro would be even better if i hadn't lost track of what's going on about 3 or 4 volumes ago. I just can't keep all the names and the situations the characters are in. For a gore and action manga, Dorohedoro can be surprisingly wordy and deep rooted storywise. I'll have to re-read it some day.
I also agree that Berserk is a masterpiece in both artwork and depiction of characters - IF you only count the volumes 2 to 14 (i.e. the ultra-long flashback). Ok, I also liked the later part of the Inquisition-arc, but especially the later volumes decline from the high standards, sadly. Another drawback: 20 years ongoing and no end in sight. This is too much, seriously.
Nausicaä and Akira are IMO the mangas that play in Gunnms league storywise, if not above. Very tightly woven, with lots of politics, emotions and story. You have to accept Miyazakis or Otomos art style though.
Now, since it seems we're talking about other great manga, what about Planetes (also by Yukimura ---> Vinland Saga), a great hard SF space tale, or 2001 Nights, dealing with the same matter.
I used to like Shamo but this manga also largely dropped in terms of storytelling with 20+ volumes (some entirely pointless). However the same artist did Glaucos, the story of a young free-diver, which is - as always - nicely drawn and is finished with only 4 volumes (3 of them scanlated).
Uzumaki, as mentioned before, is great, old school, short and really creepy horror, yes. Thanks to Uzumaki, Naruto's last name has a nice, evil association^^
I also like the whole JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series for it's manliness, awesomeness and overall inventiveness, but it's hard to get people to read this mainly because of the lenght of the whole thing (even though its divided into rather independent parts) and the special, not very manga-like art style (which on top of that develops drastically over the years).
Cowboy Bebop also is a must-see for fans of hard SF, even if you usually don't watch animes. There is a 2 volumes manga, too, but the anime is WAY better. Space, jazz, and emotions: this is the real "Space Jam".
@Top 5 Manga: Wow, it's nice to see someone mentioning, praising and depicting BAA/ BAA:LO so well! However - I admit I never read it but - Family Compo? Crayon Shinchan? How can this be in his Top 5?^^

@Top 5 Manga! Shinchan

! At least BAA is higher rated.
Mine would be BAA, LO, BLAME, Eden, Berserk.
Not 100% sure about BAA > LO. I think Yukito's style evolved and I prefer the current style. LO is more SF too, which is a plus. Nevertheless BAA's big plus is the fact that it is my 1st manga and the nostalgia that comes with the years.
@crazyankan: For Fighting mangas check out Aiki and Beelzebub.

My top 5
1. BAA (and I put HFV and LO together)
2. Akira
3. Eden
4. 20th Century Boys
5. Blood+
(Fortunately, no one has adovocated that the fake Death Note is a masterpiece)

I personally couldn't get into Jojo's even after reading the first two parts. Whereas a lot of manga (even Bleach and Naruto with fair consistency) follow a set of rules specific to their universe, Jojo's seems like it pulls plot points and character abilities out of its proverbial ass way too much. I also couldn't really get attached to any of the characters, as they were all fairly two dimensional and looked very similar: like some kind of bizarre cross between Michael Jackson and The Governator. I will admit that the underlying plot with the masks was fairly intriguing though.

@Targa: I woudn't say they pull abilities out of their ass all the time but it cleary happens sometimes, whereas other abilities are never mentioned again. I don't like these inconsistencies myself... :/ Plus: parts 1 and 2 are 80s-Hokuto no Ken-artstyle with vampires, part 3 introduces the Stands and straight forward fighting (and a crappy scanlation), part 4 is kind of mystery chasing in one town (and a crappy translation), part 5 italian mafia, part 6 prison break and imminent end of the world, part 7 is cross country USA horse race...... And you'd hardly think that
this and
this was drawn by the same mangaka.
Hm ah well, it's one of those mangas you can only either love or hate. You can't just drag it along with you (like I do with Bleach, Ganntz and all this, I don't like them but I want to know how it ends.. :/ )
My top five, uh...
1. BAA and GLO (huge nostalgia bonus)
2. Nausicaä
3. Akira
4. Vagabond
5. Planetes
...............but where do I put 20th Century Boys or Blame?? Well at least no Shinchan^^

HVF? This acronym means?
Death Note is good, but not a masterpiece.
My top five may vary according to my enthusiasm with something I'm reading right now. Only the top two are fixed:
-Alita
-Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
-Dorohedoro
-Emma
-Berserk

1.
Hyper Future Vision (not an acronym, only initials) - that is, the first arc of
BAA, the same one released in Brazil by
JBC. (You should download the
glossary available in the download page. I cannot believe you have any question not already answered there.)
2.
Death Note is based on impossible brainstorms.
3. Interesting!
BAA is not in your top 5.
P.S. Before you say, yes! I am not perfect simply because I have a terrible blemish: modesty.

Not in my top five?! I simply resumed BAA + BAA LO with the name Alita, meaning the whole series.
I've downloaded your glossary long ago, but I don't have much use to it since I know
everything about the series!
I don't like the costume of replacing a compuond name by it's initials, it is confusing.
Indeed you have that flaw... My biggest flaw is being human.

I haven't read all the Bangaihen, I was too anxious to see Emma's and William's wedding that I jumped to the last chapters

I need to read it again from the beginning.
Now I'm reading the newest manga of Kaoru Mori, Otoyomegatari, but the chapters releases are too slow...
I like more when I discover a good manga after it is finished, so I don't have to suffer waiting for a new chapter!
The mangas making me suffer right now: BAA LO obviously, Berserk, Otoyomegatari, Highschool of The Dead, Exaxxion (only one chapter to end!), Mysterious Girlfriend X and, thanks to you, Dorohedoro!

Here is another suggestion: Kiseijuu
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1000, this one is a very good sci-fi manga from the same author of the also very good Historie. You may read this one while waiting for Yukito go back to work.

Just started Hellstar Remina

and it's really intense! The story is horrific and I can't stop reading. It's drawn by Junji Ito who did Uzumaki.

vacendek: When I saw the front image for Hellstar Remina at mangaupdates, I was sure it was a Kazuo Umezu work(not my cup of tea).
Will check it out
kamugin: Kiseijuu, heard many good things about it. Must read it soon.

I've read some of Itou Junji magas like Uzumaki, Falling and some of his short stories but I'm not fond of his works. I don't like stories where no one is saved in the end. But I'll give a look in this Jigokusei Remina (Hellstar Remina)

I'd recommend Blame! and Biomega - both from Tsutomu Nihei. Story is quite confusing and nonsensical at first, but it is a very intersting ride, with lots of dark and gritty SciFi. the overal feel reminded me of Gunnm.

Once I found the first chapters of a manga where there was a schoolgirl cursed with the worst bad luck since childhood, but to compensate that she is unbeatable in the jan-ken-po game. This is a very funny manga and I want to discover if new chapters were released but unfortunately I can't remember it's name! Someone here knows this manga

Sorry for my bad english.
I recommend, if you do not know her, Moonlight Mile. Great manga of hard science fiction, and very addictive. But before, I will notice that the first pages are a bit... shocking, for this genre ^_^U.
I don't know if it is published in English. In Spanish and Italian it's.
