Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Thank you for the chapter as always, but the series release schedule is getting slower and slower, oh well it could be drifters which is so slow that I dropped it 6 years ago and hardly any chapter have been released since then 80 chapters in 11 years with 6 volumes
Ok, interesting stuff but now we don't know when the next chapter come out could be weeks, months who knows, fun while it lasted but I will just go back to my usual routine until the next chapter comes.
I actually like Unye she is very eccentric and funny I like those funny sketches the author does for her they are very endearing to me

Thank you for the chapter! The last two (and a half) chapters were pretty cool (can't wait to see more of Unye!), and it feels good to be back, even though all of my favourite manga series have an agonizingly slow update schedule, haha. (Though at least Houseki no Kuni or Mahoutsukai no Yome are being released fairly regularly.)

Now I'm gonna frighten you, guys. What if Kishiro catches this coronavirus disease and dies before finishing Mars Chronicle, huh?
If chapter 36 is really the last chapter?
Another question: how many of you are buying the Mars Chronicles? I bought Hyper Future Vision and Last Order three times each of them, but when I see the Mars Chronicles volumes available on Amazon I just don't feel like buying then. At the very least I'll skip the Muster arch completely. (take in account that I am in the middle of a serious depression crisis right now)

I actually have all the volumes including Mars Chronicle, deep down I am a completionist when it comes to a series I really like. But Kamugin last time you told me you at least had volume 1 of Mars Chronicle unless you lost it or something or simply forgotten. But in all seriousness if something does happen to Mars chronicle I hope Kishiro's brother would at least take over if the creator himself had created the manuscripts and storyboards already, as he said in a french interview he knows where the story is going and it is not going to end for a very long time. This series might last as long as Berserk atm. I'm also surprised you bought last order 3 times as you didn't skip the tiphare arc volumeskamugin wrote: Sat Apr 04, 2020 9:19 pm Now I'm gonna frighten you, guys. But like you once told me mangas are like whores in a brothel, if one is sick just take another. I mean when a series take a break too long you become indifferent like berserk has a break for months while he is doing another manga called darunki. You only think about when they are released or at least more commonly that's what I think anyway
Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
No, I didn't forget that I already own Mars Chronicle volume 1, it was just because of that I considered if buying the following ones was worth the money and the space they take. I'm running out of space in my house and very soon I will have to move for another place and I don't know if this new place will be bigger or at least have the same size. I've searched for the complete volumes scanned and Muster starts in volume 3 and goes far beyond volume 5, so if I am to skip it, I just have to buy the volume 2 so far. If you think about it, except for the lame explanation of Erica's persona changing from good to evil, Muster's arch have very little consequence in the following events. Yes, he did a lot of bad things that at the very least changed the balance of power on Mars, however how much weight that have in the present, it is up to Yukito to tell and I have a felling that, since he acquired the habit of leaving behind loose threads, the long adventures of Baron Muster are nothing but a quite big bubble he created either because he was bored of Alita and wanted to drawn something different (he lacks the skill or energy to work on more than one series at one time, like a great number of other mangaka do) or he changed his brand of favorite smokes/sake or whatever. Yes, Muster's arch explain Alita's origin: she is the daughter/clone of Nollin, Muster's sister, period. Nollin herself did nothing to the story development, so she is as relevant as Anakin Skywalwer mother (or Rey's parents), she was a no one deserving only a footnote in a page.00_unit wrote: Sat Apr 04, 2020 11:47 pm I actually have all the volumes including Mars Chronicle, deep down I am a completionist when it comes to a series I really like. As for the story being continued by another author, that almost never goes well and the Japanese have the wisdom of rarely trying to do that. Better idea would be to preserve Kishiro's frozen brain in a container until the science have the power to revive him.
Finally, about the Tiphares/Zalem arch, it was much shorter and Alita was on scene all the time, thath's why I didn't skip it.

As for buying Mars Chronicle - I was planning on buying it, but now that LO and MC are finally getting released in my country, I might skip the English version. Though I'll definitely buy the digital version of the English edition at some point, just like I did with Gunnm and Last Order.
While I don't *love* Mars Chronicle (though I feel it's been getting more interesting lately), it's one of those series whose new chapters help me cope with my depression (both reading and waiting for them), so uh, I'm in a different boat. However! If you're not feeling it, don't force yourself to buy it, and especially not in the middle of a crisis, both the global one and your personal one. You can always do it later. And remember - things can always get better. Usually they do. It's worth waiting.
And, well, it's just like 00_unit said - there's always other good stuff - be it manga, Western comics, all kinds of animation, books, games, music, movies, TV series...
Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Well, actually it was me who said that to 00_unit in the first place.Silvery wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2020 11:27 pm If you're not feeling it, don't force yourself to buy it, and especially not in the middle of a crisis, both the global one and your personal one. I want to buy some stuff just to try to take my (depressive) mind out of these major crisis: the worldwide pandemic and the imbeciles that are (mis)governing my country.
Regarding Mars Chronicle, I've decided to buy numbers 2, 3 and 6. With numbers 3 and 6 I am still getting a lot of Muster, but I want to cover Yoko's origin. In the end I don't know, I am very unstable right now, full of anger and taking a good deal of medicine to carry on living. I want my daughter to read these in the future, her second name is "Alita", if she misses the numbers 4 and 5, at least I have the digital copies. Well, whatever, I don't know if I will live that long.

Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
It wouldn't be the first nor the last time that a long course opera is concluded by a different author due to the death of the original one. Usually it opens the big question if the final is up to the quality of the story and of what the author would have done instead, but non can say if it is even better. The point is: Would the publisher be interested in continuing GUNNM in the first place?.
Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Gunnm is no "opera" in the strict sense and as far as comics goes, I can't remember an example of something like that wen't well. Asterix? Definitely not! Uderzo was splendid drawing but mediocre as a writer, he couldn't compare to Goscinny. The American comics are the best example as how things can go wrong. Star Wars? Blargh!MrFaber wrote: Wed Apr 08, 2020 7:04 pm It wouldn't be the first nor the last time that a long course opera is concluded by a different author due to the death of the original one. As I said before, in Japan, when an author dies, the manga is halted.
And about Mars Chronicle, MrFaber? Are you buying it or have the intention of buying?

Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Hey guys! Hope you're all doing fine in this lockdown situation most of us (I assume) are in.
For me, it's not like I am desperately waiting for the next chapter to be released anymore. It's still great though when it comes out and you get to see those drawings again and to know a little bit more of the story. It's not like LO obviously but still, quite enjoyable.
I'm buying the Mars Chronicles, first because they don't take much space to be honest, they are pretty thin compared to some of the LO ones and there are only a few of them up to now, and also because, well, I still like the story and the drawing even if it's quite different from what we used to get.
That's true that if a manga is on break or hiatus you can always find a new one to "wait" for the other but I think it's getting more and more difficult to find new ones. I've tried several times and I've found myself basically waiting for all of them now!
I follow Berserk, Vagabond, Aposimz (from Nihei), Mars Chronicles and those are already pretty long to wait between chapters. Origin that was great but it's finished now. Waiting for the new one of Boichi. To be honest, Gigant from Hiroya Oku, I don't find it that great. Last hero Inu yashiki, was ok but finished. So at some point, I'm getting dry !

Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Am I the only one here who hates Muster? Am I?!? Well, I'm a hater by nature. A Quasimodo like creature, a hunchback, a Gollum.
Nevertheless you people muster agree that this arch was quite below Kishiro standards, art wise and plot wise. Don't be like SW fanboys that accept everything without criticism.

Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
Trust me when I say I read in other forums some people feel the exact same way how they really don't like Muster and also the sentiment of how boring Mars Chronicle was in the first 30 chapters. The first part and last order set a pretty high bar. I am not upset but I am a little disappointed in what could have been. I just don't know how Muster arc relates to the overall Mars plotline besides the treasure playing a vital role later which that part reminds of me of Indiana Jones tbh. But I am personally enjoying the current arc, Unye provide some light hearted comedy I which I like and it has a much more interesting story and cast so I always see improvement as progress.kamugin wrote: Thu Apr 09, 2020 12:46 pmAm I the only one here who hates Muster? I assume you hate him more than Payne(I know how much you hate him even though he hardly as any screentime that is why I wasn't bothered by him), figure four and hugo( he was a kind of a dick) combined
Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
So basically you guys hate most of the male important figures in each series ?! At this point you should just point out what you like, it would be faster !!00_unit wrote: Thu Apr 09, 2020 10:40 pm I assume you hate him more than Payne(I know how much you hate him even though he hardly as any screentime that is why I wasn't bothered by him), figure four and hugo( he was a kind of a dick) combined
But are you disappointed by the character itself and how it behaves or by the author making it the way it is? It's really two different things, and the first one would mean that the author made a great job creating it!
And that is exactly what SW fanboys would do, just criticizing everything if it does not fit their "concept" of the story. Accepting the story as the story teller narrates it, is basically what any normal person would do, not knowing where the story goes. In the end if you don't like it it's your opinion and feeling.kamugin wrote: Thu Apr 09, 2020 12:46 pm Don't be like SW fanboys that accept everything without criticism.
You can even at some point make a "fork" of it and write your own idea of the story. But being angry at it won't help anyone, especially you to get through it.
Imagine every person that like the manga and get to say what they want in it, and then the author makes it for each of them. Pretty shit to me.
You are very disappointed not angry. And people that are not as disappointed as you are not brainless, they just accepted that they cannot do anything about it.
Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
I don't especially hate Muster, I'm not impressed by him. In the end he's a Phantom of the Opera repurpousing, with a very similar story. I wouldn't cut it out, because he was functional to the general narrative. It's role is to introduce the martian politics before the current 3 factions faida. And probably to contextualize where the necrosoldiers and/or matusalizations technologies come from. In the end it's kinda like the vampires arc from Last Order that was used to explain how out civilization fell and how Arthur Farrel's civilization came to be.
The problems why we are not liking much Mars Chronicles are the pacing and the spectrum, which proceed from the original problem, which is Kishiro's actual focus.
An arc like Munster's or the Vampire's wouldn't have been so long and stuffed with characters in the first GUNNM serie. Everything was faster, with less characters who were very carefully chartacterized but they might appearl literally for a few panels, while the story of Gally moved on to a very clear direction.
This was, in my opinion, because Kishiro was writing the story of Gally and was interest in writing the story of Gally. But it's since 1995 that he no longer wants to write Gally's story. He's way more interest in writing short character centered storie, like the one, for istance, of Springfoot Jack. Or, i smell it coming, the story of Unye.
Now gunnm is an anthological narration, with a fil rouge which is Gally. No longer her story, but a collection of stories that cross her own.
Do we have to like it? Not necessarily. Is it bad? Maybe, but still lecit in the end.

Re: Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 036 (part 1) Is out!
First and all, don't mind me too much (and 00_unit doesn't necessarily share the same opinions as me), I am a pessimist by nature (or "nature" doesn't give me many reasons to be optimistic, I prefer to express it this way).Sam wrote: Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:43 am So basically you guys hate most of the male important figures in each series ?! Male characters that I like: Ido, Jashugan, Nova, Trindad. Yukito put a lot of thought when composing these characters. Others are just ok, nothing too bad or special about them: Sechs, Weasel, Den, Chaos and a bunch of others that I don't remember the name or it doesn't come to my mind right now. Most of the others are just part of the scenery. But there are stereotypes of characters that the Japanese like a lot and because of that they appear in an enormous number of manga and anime: the good guy that is at the same time dumb and stubborn (I can't stand this kind of character anymore). Hugo and Figure Four are in this category.
Another stereotype that is even more diffused is the villain that is evil just because he loves being evil: Colonel Payne and, specially, Muster. I know that the reasons because Muster choose the path of evil are shown by Kishiro, but you can create an elaborate revenge without being "evil", there are lots of characters that do so. My problem isn't exactly Muster being evil, it is the way he expresses his evilness. Perhaps I am limited, because I am more good than evil (believe me, I can be very evil if I judge it is necessary, but there are very very few occasions when I can exercise my evilness). There was a 007 movie that I watched many years ago, when the character was still portrayed by Sean Connery. In that film, he encounters a villain that tells him that most of the people can't be totally, 100%, evil. That is true and it never left my mind. So is Muster one of those special people that reached 100% evilness or he is just a joke? A bad conceived character? I think he is just a bad developed character.

You are right and wrong at the same time. Telling that in the end it is just a matter of personal taste or feelings is a false argument. A good story stands for itself and is able to withstand the passage of time. More people tends to like them than dislike, new fans are created long time after the first ones died.Sam wrote: Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:43 amAnd that is exactly what SW fanboys would do, just criticizing everything if it does not fit their "concept" of the story. If I had the skill, I would create a fan made spin-off of Gunnm by retelling all Mars Chronicles and screw up Kishiro, but I lack skill and energy. My condition undermines a lot of what I can do and I have tried many occupations or hobbies but always end by giving up. My alternative is what my wife calls "subversive reading": if a manga takes a way that displeases you, buy just the part you really like. Because of this, I'm trying to "trim off" Muster's arch out of Mars Chronicles.

I think Mars is a solid Arc so far. I didn't like the Vampire chapters at first. I am in no hurry for anything in Gunnm.
I want 6-9+ tankoubans worth of Panzer Kunst Chunin Exams please. We are here now and it is awesome!
