Ho will impact Ghost in a Shell movie upon Gunnm movie?

Post by MrFaber » Mon Apr 18, 2016 10:42 pm

Since, GiaS will be released way before Alita, and it will be a (probably lame) movie about a though female cyborg fighter, how will that affect Cameroon's Gunmm? Will it look so badly like a "copy" enough to make them quit the project?

Subtopic: Wher the PH******CK is chapter 15.1?? :D

As a fan of the manga Cameron as a producer would I think try to stay as true to the source as possible. Although the recent uproar over whitewashing Kusanagi with Johansson could influence their casting of Alita/Gally, unless she's completely CG.

It would be interesting to see what happens with Ido since he has a Japanese name but Caucasian appearance. If his name stays intact that will be one key step.

whitewashing wont impact this movie i believe
the democgraphics of the future are quite messed up so there is no saying how gally wud look like based on ancestry
also japan AND germany both have their decendents on mars for a long time, so gally could have a non pure japanese background as well

and as for her appearance- she does not look asian so there is no compulsion to pick an asian actress based off gally's appearance

in short: the argument for motoko being asian in the movie is cuz she works for a japanese government agency and setting of GITS is in japan

BUT

these points do NOT apply to battle angel, since the setting is the future where the demographics are completely changed and there is no canonical thing which wud push us to have the need of an actress of a certain specific ethnicity to be gally

as for the GITS movie affecting the BAA movie's story- as AR-99 pointed out, cameron is a BAA fan and hence it is highly likely that he will follow the story as much as logically possible for his movie

PS: i was also wondering about chapter 15.1 :?:

Keep your pants on.

15.1 is almost ready to release.
There was a month time in between chapters.

Thank you for the good new! :)

Since it's gonna be an american movie i guess some character will magically become american. It wouldn't be the first time. So, maybe Ido Daisuke will become someting like Ethan Dyson, who knows :D Anyway Scrapyard is, as a matter of fact, is built upon the ruins of St. Louis, as the gateway arch suggests..

As for Gally, i think she is supposed to look japanese, despite born on Mars from God only knows which ancestory. And i guess she'll stay japanese in the movie.

1. Once the story takes place in the United States, there's no surprise if the characters are American.
2. Yoko grew up in a German-like environment. The fact that her name is Japanese does not mean much. Supposing she does have ancestors (we still don't know what exactly she is), she could be a mix of German-Japanese, or 100% German, or 100% Japanese.

I'm becoming curious about Gally's ethnicity. I wonder if there is a way to post the question directly on yukitopia.

I think it will have an effect on GUNNM adaptation, since some topics are somewhat similar with Ghost in the Shell (at first, nobody will dig too much into the details of each one). Depending on how well GitS does at the Box Office, GUNNM live action may seem more attractive to studios. Since Scarlett Johansson is starring the movie, I think it will turn out OK and it may be a good precedent to GUNNM. Also, James Cameron producing = Money (hopefully).

I don't think ethnicity will be a problem with the GUNNM adaptation, it has never been a major plot point in the series. In fact, I think it would make that movie universe a lot more interesting. Anyway, I never liked the idea of a full CGI Alita... I don't know, I just can't emphatize with a CGI character (it reminds me of Jar jar binks, or even worse, Avatar  ). I prefer the main characters being real actors and actresses, and maybe some secondary role or villains to be CGI.

Interesting topic!

I don't think the BA movie's success will depend on what happens with GitS. (As for similarities, remember we've already had Elysium, among other similar movies). I think it will have its own constraints that affect its success. The main ones are budget issues and James Cameron pulling out as director. We have no idea how much collaboration with Robert Rodriguez there will actually be. Even Avatar 2's success or failure could impact the making of the BA film. Anything is possible.

I really think it's a stretch to say she could be 100% German. If Yukito intended her to be German, wouldn't he have given her a German name? Why name her "陽子" if not to indicate that she is Japanese, or at least East Asian?

She grew up in a German-like environment, but there are diasporic Asian peoples who have grown up in European environments.

I simply suggested that she could be anything.
There are all kinds of peoples in Europe, I agree, and there are also Europeans. Names do not mean much, as I said. In the United States, for example, we can find people with English (obviously), Spanish, French and even Russian names, although they are… American.
In Germany, nowadays, there are even lots of Turkish names, and it seems that Syrian names are going to become common very soon.

She's probably mixed. Like, European with some Asian, like my friend (who also looks like Alita). So Eurasian.

I don't know, I just don't agree. I don't see anything to indicate that Gally is not Japanese. She probably isn't mixed either, though I supposed it is possible.

Starting in Last Order, it seems like characters are named to indicate their ethnicity. Nobody debates the ethnicities of characters like "Arthur Farrell", "Ninon Silberg", "Vilma Fachiri", or "Erika". It's obvious because of their name and appearance. The same can be applied to "Yoko", "Haruka", "Ping Woo", etc.

(But this cannot be said for the people on Earth like "Ido Daisuke" "Zapan" or "Yugo")

I just realized that I was wrong in my previous post! There are pretty good chances that Gally is a special case where her name does not indicate her ethnicity........(MC and MM spoilers)
Spoiler:
...assuming that Gally was not a normal baby and actually a Maske tumor. If this is true, her name only indicates the ethnicity of the person who gave her the name.

So this means that Gally really could be anything. There seems to be an East Asian population in Cydonia, so she could still be Japanese. Or maybe she is something completely different! It won't be known until we see who her biological parent(s) are.

I think GitS will be ok and not recognizable as manga derived. It will be a cyberpunk future. I loved the new Total Recall (The original is funnier than it is cool), and I bet GitS has similar production design.

Robert Rod was the Sin City guy. YK is the Frank Miller manga guy. There is a world of untapped cel shading techniques in the CG world, which by the way; from a VFX budget standpoint, are massively cheaper than live footage vfx integration cg shading techniques. RR is also known as the cheap guy.

Until we know more, it seems likely that no one will connect them outside of a reviewer saying "Based on the Japanese comic book, popular in the 90's..."

I didn't even touch the whitewashing non drama.

I always thought Motoko looked white because she looks like a sex bot in that world and there are ethnic-japanese looking characters all over the place...geisha bots, aramaki, every evil politician... therefore, when they look white they are.

When I lived in Korea, which is not Japan, if I saw a white woman she was either a US soldier, an English teacher, or a Russian/Former Eastern Block nation prostitute. 100%. I always thought that if you saw Motoko walking down the street in her world, the possibility that she was just a sex worker was there and intentional.

Given that there are Asian looking people in the GitS world, and it is definitely a Global Thriller world, the idea that someone named Motoko Kusanagi inhabits a combat cyber body intended to look like a civilian sex worker model; that, oh hey, looks white by the way; seems like the right idea.

The icing on the cake was when Japanese people jumped in and said they preferred a white American to a CHINESE American...many in America are happy to not think there is a difference or it matters. Funny irony to my white American eyes when my fellow Americans learn about racism/nationalism(?) in Asia.

Gally, I always imagined as Asian, but I would have whitewashed her with a younger Christina Ricci, who is probably too old now. I definitely told a few asian girls over the years that they looked the part so I get it, but most of the Asian actresses we get are lanky-sexy. Tiny asian girls usually fall into the nerdy archetype in western pop culture. I have always HATED the name Battle Angel Alita as it made me cringe because it sounds tasteless and porny to my American ears. I felt this way for years BEFORE I found out it was originally called "Gun Dream" which might be the coolest title ever.

Not that we will ever get it, but I love YK's counter culture sci-fi making Indians a big part of the future. Starting with the Rahda character back in the Vampire chapters, up through to Aga Mbadi, Indians are definitely a distinct ethnic group in Gunnm. I think Jashugan was probably Indian too.

Tatiana MaslanaI don't know...the actress from Orphan Black would be a good non-asian choice. Off to watch this weeks episode of OB.

Totally forgot that her name has always(?) been Yoko....just Gally/Alita was mixed up in the trans.

She's Japanese.

And I don't care about whitewashing as a sin.

Given the proposed modified Avatar previs production method as the means; just a face matters.

I bet it is Jessica Alba.

She and RR are bros. She looks the part. I ALWAYS thought that when James Cameron produced Dark Angel around the same time he optioned BAA there was a connection...it all makes sense.

And she is Mexican. Mexicanwashed? You just can't win.

To Martin: As i, earlier, made the same mistake, i must point that Aga Mbadi is actually of african ethnicity by name and look, and not indian, despite the "yoga style" may be tricky.

The same can be applied to "Yoko", "Haruka", "Ping Woo", etc.
According to Wikipedia, Caella was born in Romany. But her last name doesn't sound anything like romenian. If i must say, Vilma Fachiri could totally be an Italian name. And she is also blonde, which is all but typical for Romenians and Italians, but everything can be. Who know, maybe she is of Rom (gypsy) origins.

(As for similarities, remember we've already had Elysium, among other similar movies).
And what about that terrible Astro Boy movie from some years ago, that took place on a rich floating city that dumped it's waste on a scrapyard city beneath, populated by raggy men and robots?

When i watched it i wasn't amused. I wonder if the original Astro Boy setting was the same or if the movie ripped Gunnm.
I have always HATED the name Battle Angel Alita as it made me cringe because it sounds tasteless and porny to my American ears.
Ditto. I, also, always refused to call it "Alita, l'angelo della battaglia" even if, at last, in italian it doesn't sound pornish at all, just lame.

Agree on all counts.
(I suppose Yukito Kishiro ripped off Astro rather than vice versa, given the plethora of other references in BAA.. Blue Oyster Cult, Yes music, and can anyone say Grace Jones aka champion motorballer?)

Yes, or what about Kinuba (the champion of the coliseum that got his body stolen by Makaku). He bares more than a resemblense with Slaine (from the comic with the same name). I wonder if he makes it into the movie as well. It is nice to see what has Kishiro's interest, though.

Coonsidering that Kishiro quotes several artists in his works, this is not exactly a surprise, and the Glossary on Gunnm says that:

Also, once Ghost in the Shell is the new trend, Kodansha Comics is already re-releasing the series: http://kodanshacomics.com/series/ghost-in-the-shell/

No word about Mars Chronicle, though.

Much later in time, in America, the following happens---
Doc Ido finds Alita's head in the junkyard under Tiphares while searching for parts. This all takes place just East of the Rocky mountains, more or less in Colorado. We know this because Nova had his secret laboratory in "the Granite Inn"- AKA - the Iron Mountain.
There was already a long discussion about the origin of Gally's name. In the Japanese version her name is Gally/Gary, and she is named after Ido's black male cat.

Alita is of course the American name for her.

There was a masterful diatribe because of Sergio:mrgreen:

Also in a different version it is Doctor Nova who picks up her brain and recreates her body. His protege asks Nova who's brain it is, "Only the mightiest warrior in the world! She killed me once, you know!"
