Does that mean we will get some flashbacks to good old Yoko and her assassination attempt?
Let me put it this way...

He is talking about that OTHER cyborg movie that he did. :P

Damn! And I only see this now... XD

Good News For "Battle Angel" Fans: Manga Preserved!

I have heard it from a couple of different commenter's as well as discussion boards that the action scene passed on to me by my "Source #3" does not hold water because of several things including the fact that cars and bullets are illegal in the original story. Well my friends it turns out that you are right. I have been on the horn with my sources for some time now and #3 just got back to me with the good word - here is his email:

"Cameron was rewriting someone else's draft for the studio -- but he wasn't happy with much of it. For what I know, Cameron had to rush to complete his makeover, and even when he did, he still had so much he wanted to change. Unfortunately because he had to rush off and begin everyday work on Avatar, he did the best he could.

From what I've been told now, Cameron has completely reworked the draft to match the manga. What existed before with the amazing, almost surreal action sequence is now gone, obliterated within development hell.

Cameron's still furiously typing away at Battle Angel while cutting Avatar and working on that respectively. The screenplay in its form is still damn action-packed and dramatic, as well as being well written. It still isn't where it should be, and Cameron's working away on making sure that (it will) hold up.

What he's worried about? Making sure his actress doesn't despise the new draft he's writing. After all, she too is a big fan of the manga, and was told from the start to read much of the script with the pretense that cities, characters, and events would most likely change."

So there you are. You were right and my source #3 has cleared the air - the battle scene that was mentioned has been canned in favor of the original intent of the manga. My other two sources are solid on their information however. I don't mind passing this info on to you as I report it when I get it and that action scene was definitely part of the script at one point - but obviously scripts evolve and with Cameron at the helm it has to be perfect. His creativeness is unparalleled and I can't begin to imagine where he will take us with Battle Angel - but I know I am damn excited by it.

Hmmm. His actress is a manga fan too. Who the heck is it?
Well... I guess this is a big PHEW!

+1, that's a good news and a great relief...

By the way...

Who is she??? o_0
A LIVE actress??? I've heard that Alita will be CG, so an actress is needed for motion capture... Hope will be CG... not live actress...

Gollum and King Kong was CGs too, but they also have been played an voiced by A.Serkis.
So it doesn't matter at all.

I wouldn't say it doesn't matter AT ALL.
There is a reason anime with Japanese audio always sounds better than the dub.
Not only do they have more voice actors, they have BETTER voice actors.
You know... people trained to act with their voices.
Not failed B movie stars that do voice acting on the side, as a meal ticket.

Also... remember, remember V for Vendetta.
One of the reasons Hugo Weaving took over (and did a superb job) was because James Purefoy couldn't really act the part without using facial expressions.

There is a great difference in voice and body acting and performance of someone who made it into Hollywood on the action star and tits and ass ticket compared to someone who can actually act.

I ment that it doesn't matter if it's real or CG personages - they're always played by actors.
But remember that all actors have to dub themselves afterwards, so I don't think it would be of much difference.

No they don't.
It is done only in cases when sound recorded during filming is unusable. Mostly noisy exteriors, and almost never interiors.
Although... these days even what looks like exterior to the audience - might be filmed on a sound stage.

Good voice acting is not easy.
Get some dual-audio hentai for best presentation of difference.
Japanese get voice actors. USA distribution companies get porn stars. To voice act.
I know... :?

Really?.. But there're still voice actors in America, who dub Pixar cartoons, Disney cartoons et cetera te cetera... When you produce film you have to hire a first-class VA to make it sounds great, but when you just localize it you can have only second or third-rate actors to do the job.

And also... do you have releases that were not dubbed, but instead a single person reading entire lines? Or two persons?

Well.. They don't.
What they do get is celebrities and locally famous actors.
What Japanese do is they match voice actors to characters. For example, Kouichi Yamadera almost always does strong, heroic males.

What American production companies do is the opposite.
They get the actors and THEN they build characters around them. They even draw them to look like the stars.
Because... you know... if the fish didn't look like Will Smith that would break the illusion.

ImageImage

So, they almost don't have voice actors. They have actors playing themselves.

At least for all the "big ones". Animated series get the B grade movie stars, with "bigger" characters getting the better actors and less important characters getting the... well.. not so good actors.

My personal favorite dub is of course the dubbing of The Magic Roundabout from English to American and releasing it as Doogal in the USA. XD

Oh, come on... in anime industry there're only 50-60 real dubbing stars and hundreds of B-rate seiyu. So it's the same in the end everywhere. The only difference is that dub is almost everytime cheaper and worse than the original.

All my friends who bothered to study the language (and one actually mastered it, teaching abroad in Japan) have told me that the og nihonjin voice-actors have the same "sound" or characteristics of standard western animation, say...the batman/Justice League cartoons' voice-actors.

It boils down to it sounds "better" or "crazier" when you don't speak the language.

I've said this before and I'll keep saying it: Cameron's gonna mediocre it up.

Talking about japanese dubbing, don't forget that they don't talk "normal" japanese there. Everything is theatralized and exagerated.
Basically, if you wanted to stay "true" to their way of dubbing, characters would have to talk like in theatre, not like in a movie.
Do you really think it would be better?

ept... o_0... I don't think so... But...
Maybe it'll be better NOT making this movie at all...

Because there can be only two possible outcomes, both BAD:

1) If the movie is good, then it will become POPULAR. But, it will never be manga, because a lot still wil be changed or cut from original plot (remember silly GUNNM OVA), so it will REPLACE manga in eyes of ordinary people.
Popularity is the worst thing imaginable for this. It will be like I've read somewhere in this forum that people will ask "have you seen this great movie",and you'll want to kill them. =///

2) If it is dull shit, it will be a subject for laughter at. Not good at all. It will have a bad reputation.

I fear both this outcomes... =///

Int 29Ah:

I would like to believe that there's a third outcome.

That the movie is so good and true to the manga that it actually inspires people to read it for more detail and depth.

At the moment it's set to be PG13 though so it doesn't look likely. However if this movie turns out to be good despite much changed from the manga, it doesn't change the fact that the manga is still there and is cherished by its long time fans.

Getting outraged by noobies who only know the movie is kind of naive and immature though don't you think? And who's to say they won't pick up the manga as well anyway?

Even if the movie is very good, nearly nobody will read original maga, except it's true fans.

Example:
Here, in Russia, there was a movie called "The night watch", based on the books of one famous russian author. Everybody liked this movie (but I didn't, and didn't read his books). There wasn't an increment in sales/reading his books afterwards, and people explained it saying "I've already seen the movie, why should I read a book?". Only true fans left to read his books.

The same situation here. If the movie is good, it will REPLACE manga in the eyes of a beholder, and only true fans will read it.
It's like a pseudo-popularity: it is popular, but in the wrong form. This is awfull.

I don't think I can agree with you on that. If those people have that attitude they were never going to get into the manga to begin with so there's no loss there. It wouldn't be any more awful than not having any of the people who aren't part of the readership now.

The manga still exists and I personally believe readership would definitely increase due to the movie increasing awareness. I'll bet there was indeed an increment in the Night Watch readership following the movie, but probably not a very significant one because it wasn't a very good movie.

My counter example would be The Lord of the Rings. Sure you have people who watched the movies and won't ever read the books, but they never would have anyway. But the awareness that the movies brought has definitely increased its sales for those who would. Is that so awful?

nah man. the manga is so amazing I'm sure it'll really take many people who didn't know about the manga by surprise and make rabid fans of them. it's also very visual since it's illustrated and therefore more easily accessible than say the dense prose of tolkien or lewis.

of course it's true that the original fans will see the manga version in their heads when they hear "battle angel" whereas the newcomers will have the movie version in theirs. you might think that's a sad thing, but it really can't be helped. that's just the nature of the game.

at least you can count yourself as an original reader if it becomes trendy to like the manga version as well.

Quite a bad example, I think, after the movie his books rereleased several times. And the latest 3 books, you can say, were whiped from the bookstores after being printed. The same goes to another You-know-who.

As the same goes to Harold Potter. Film increased the sales of the book wich caused the raise of the book's popularity, which caused the increment of cash the second movie got etc etc

So I don't think there will be any big problems.

Strange... Then, perhaps, I had wrong info. =///

But, anyway... popularity is the last thing I wish for GUNNM =///
It's a masterpiece - it mustn't be popular.

Exactly. See the movie for yourself and cherish the manga for yourself. It doesn't change because it becomes popular. You just have to deal with new and different opinions about it. That's a cross we all have to bear. It's easier if you don't care what they think.
