I'm looking forward for Ponyo, too! The short scenes I've seen, it seems its a film for little kids, but till today, Hiyazaki have managed to address every generation, everytime.

Manga: BAA (It IS a great manga, but it is also very subjective of me, since it was my first manga. I sure've read other great mangas after that, but the first one is still the first one)
Anime: like Crazy, Ghibli-stuff. I can't decide between them.


@Anime-haters: What do you not like in anime? Did you simply never watched a good one, do you hate the animations, the color, the anime being a manga-adaption, dumb stories?
I think there are great animes around but mostly you wont find them in the usual 24-episodes-OVAs...

I am a fan of art, simply.
Thus, I do like the anime Monster, because I do like the manga and the anime is as great.
Usually, animes destroy the mangas they are based on. And I have seen many people defending that a different media requires different narratives. The adaptation of Monster shows that such a tale is false.
Anyway, the problem is not restricted to manga/anime. V for Vendetta is a masterpiece while a graphic novel; the movie is iconoclasty, simply. On the other hand, 300 is a great graphic novel, and the film is a work of art.

Personally, I happen to be one of these that started watching animes in their childhood and found mangas WAY much later, in the late twenties.
So the anime I happen to like most are totally disconnected from the manga I read and my "animey" tastebuds are a bit ...old-fashioned...

For me, *the* anime (the one and only one) is "Kidō Senshi Gundam". All the other pale in comparison to it. Sorry, but that's where my anime-related heart lies.

Curiously enough, "Kidō Senshi Gundam: The Origin" by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is the only anime-related manga I try to buy regularly. Because it is not only well-drawn, but it is also the most faithful to the original anime...

Sorry for digging out such an old and desolated topic, but I'll just post it here in order not to create another useless one.

After two failure specimens of anime I've ever tried (BAA OVA and Dead Space - both were unimaginable crap) I've finally decided to try something good (by quality and responses) and serious by the plot.

I've chosen GITS since it's sci-fi and looked close to the BAA from the first glance - downloaded the new (2008) version of the first part, which was praised for it's graphics (GITS 2.0), GITS 2:Innocence, and two seasons of GITS: Stand alone complex.

Up to the date I've watched two full-length movies (2.0 and Innocence), and, to be honest, I didn't like them. I don't even know if I should waste my time watching two seasons of stand alone complex.

The only objective complaint I have is about the plot - it's WEAK relatively to the BAA, moreover, relatively to any BAA volume. Seriously, it's about nothing - too much boring speeches with far-fetched phylosophical monologues, which are mostly irrelevant to the plot.

Maybe I have too high standards or GUNNM is just like a baby duck syndrome for me, but I didn't like GITS. At least, I have a BAA manga jewel to compare it with.

moooV, if you look for kick-ass visual, you have to give the anime AKIRA a chance. Released 1988, it is still one of the greatest pieces of animated art ever made. You'll notice that every mimic facial feature has it's own animation cell, it's even lip-synched in fact. The animation is almost the best you could do with anime, in 1988 and imho until today - without any CGI (I think... since it was made in 1987 mostly).
The only sad thing is that the anime was made way before the manga had ended, so the story is super compressed and has an alternative ending to the manga.

I'm not going to watch any animes in quite a while - after watching gits I've understood that I just don't percept them. In case of BAA OVA I didn't pay attention to this aspect due to the overall crappyness of it, but gits is the perfect case.

Animes feel extremely weird: when something looking like a cartoon pretends to be a movie, it provokes a serious cognitive dissonance, denying it from being taken seriously no matter of the plot.
When you're watching a cartoon (I watch only South Park (it has a brilliant satire) and Futurama (it isn't noticeable from the distance, but it has many thin scientific and hidden eruditional jokes)), which isn't pretending to be something else, it doesn't feel weird at all. But animes do - you can take it as a cartoon interpretation of the "uncanny valley" phenomenon.

In contrast to the ordinary cartoons, no matter of the animation quality (in the trailer you've provided also) animes have another strange effect. The animation feels jumpy - as if it's framerate is around 10 frames per second instead of 25 - they're really hard to percept, all motions are jagged, and, in fact, are percepted as a picture slide show instead of a solid motion. By the way, parts of gits, which weren't drawn (were in 3d) looked perfectly normal.

Strange, but ordinary cartoons don't have any of these side effects - they're playing smooth and don't look weird, no matter how primitively they're drawn.

That's why I don't like animes in general and I don't watch them.

For me, the best manga series are Gunnm and Berserk. However, I also greatly enjoy series like Gunsmith Cats, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Flame of Recca, Hellsing, and MPD Psycho. As long as the story is captivating enough, I'll check it out.

As for anime, I've always been partial to old school stuff, like Castle of Calgliostro, Mysterious Cities of Gold and such. To me, the best anime came out in-between the mid 80s and mid 90s. Anime was cel-drawn, cheap, and had that pulp fiction crudeness that I love. I love cheesey titles like Cyber City Oedo 808, or the convoluted Curse of the Undead Yoma, or the soft-core hentai hyper-violent Doomed Megalopolis. I absolutely love the original Tenchi Muyo OAVs (the new one that continued it was such a fucking let down, it makes me sad). And of course, Cowboy Bebop. Brilliant show. The Macross Plus OAV is also one of my favorites; great animation, awesome story without even having to know much about the original Macross series. Plus it had one of Yoko Kanno's best soundtracks. Also, anything by the late Satoshi Kon.


Also, I really wish Akira had been an OAV series. I mean, the motion picture has absolutely stunning animation, but the story pales in comparison to the scope and richness of the manga.

I'm also totally in love with the "old" look of anime. I've never heard of Doomed Megalopolis but hyper-violent with soft-core hentai sounds just right. Those kind of "pulp"-genre really isn't made anymore... --I've just skipped through the first part online (english dub even) and it's so plain and simple, lol, great!^^
I can throw in Ninja Scroll OVA, another example of great action, a little soft-core hentai and 100% hand-made (there is an OVA series but I've never watched it and I think I won't ever). Then there'd be Urotsukidoji but I watched the 6(?) parts in complete disorder so I didn't get what was going on. An all time favorite of mine is also Record of Lodoss Wars OVA although I've last seen it when I still had a video recorder...
A newer anime with quite the decent action was Afro Samurai imo. While the story drags a little, the fights are really cool (the first OVA at least. The second was just old wine in new skins.) And for even more Samurai: I've never watched Samurai Champloo although it's by Watanabe who also made Cowboy Bebop. I don't know, while I found the concept of Jazz in space unbelievably great, I can't take Rap-Samurais serious...

Aww, no, you bought it? Personally I found the animation quality good and the fights were nice in a way that they are ridiciously over-the-top. A relaxing no-brainer. But I'd never buy such series (it's on youtube even and as I'm rewatching it now I realize that the real thing can't cope with my memory's image). If you don't like it, quickly sell it on ebay again while they are still talking about it.

I cannot sell them on eBay, I think. They are Brazilian Portuguese versions (both manga and anime). Anyway, they a\re already members of my library. Maybe my descendants will be interested in reading/watching, who knows?

I just finished watching Katanagatari, probably one of the best animes I've ever seen. Beautiful art, interesting 3-dimensional characters, amazing music, thought-provoking plot, and incredible performances by the voice actors. The animation is a bit spotty at times, but it's good where it counts and seeing as the focus is more on dialogue than fighting it doesn't detract very much. It's based on the work of the best-selling Japanese author Nisio Isin.

The story is about a deposed princess and the inheritor of a deadly unarmed martial art who go on a quest to secure the 12 most powerful swords in Japan. By itself that sounds fairly generic, but where the series truly shines is the stories behind each of the 12 katanas and their wielders, and the development of the overarcing plot as the series progresses. It's not an exaggeration to say that the ending is emotionally moving. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially people who like anime.

Ever since GLO releases slowed down, I've actually been looking into other manga and anime.

I was shocked at how great Claymore was, in manga form and anime form. The anime was cut short compared to the manga due to budget problems, but up until the last 3-4 episodes (it's 26 eps. long), it is the most amazing, stand-out anime I've ever seen. Not even because of the artistic parts (like story and animation (the visual art and soundtrack are fantastic still)), but there is not a SINGLE FILLER EPISODE. Apart from the ending, it follows the manga straight up, %100!!!!
The cool thing about Claymore (among many), is that even though the gestures and art are awkward and stiff in the first 4-5 volumes, the anime WELL makes up for that, so if you don't like the initial style of the manga (which does improve greatly), watch the anime!

I have also grown very attached to Fullmetal Alchemist the manga. The original anime was amazing, I think it's what got me interested in anime in the first place. But the manga is fantastic! I fell in love with Envy in the manga, and the author herself doesn't even know what gender it is!

Those are my fancies. They are all truly epic and amazing for different reasons. And of course Battle Angel Alita (AKA Gunnm: Hyper Future Vision). I can't help but look at GLO differently now, though.

I don't know if that is true, most 13-26 episodes (or even 50 sometimes) anime are just for promoting the manga. Claymore is awesome (I love Miria ^_^) and the anime too unlike most adaptations today, but final 6 or more (I don't remember how many, but it began with the invation of Pieta) are really lame compared with the rest of the series, but I suppose they just wanted to make a quick end for the anime.

It's hard to say what manga or anime is my favourite, I like the 90s because there are so many good series (Saint Seiya, Slam Dunk, Slayers, You are under arrest and many many others) but I feel like lately anime are just moe girls and fanservice everywere, like that thing of High School of the Dead.... what the hell is that? A zombie-gore-anime with tons of ecchi, how can you take serious that? It's just a joke and sadly I know a lot of people that love it.
