Phase 102 Translation Script

Post by TargaryenX »

They're dragging up a lot of old characters this chapter, so I'm going to need you guys' help with the names and spellings.

Page 01
Box: The Scrapyard: ZOTT broadcast grounds

Kaos: Alita...!
Box: Kaos

Box: Vector

Koyomi: Go get 'em Alita!!
Box: Koyomi
Box: Chavez

Page 02
Phase 102: Surpass the limit

Page 03
Text: As silence fills the battlefield, an iron-and-steel angel heralds the beginning of the end.
Big Text: The last battle starts now!!

Page 04
Box: Floating City Tiphares

Pam: Miss Alita!
Nora: How beautiful...
Box: Pam Mahan
Box: Nora LaFargue

Marge: Professor... exactly what just happened there?

Page 05
Marge: Last time she came back with a tail, this time it's wings... they certainly are pretty...
Marge: But I feel as if something else about her has changed as well... actually, it worries me a bit.

Nova: Kyaha! Flan is hope!!
Nova: The Imaginos body that I created is capable of reacting to the user's consciousness and adapting its form and composition.

Nova: As I haven't been able to properly analyze it, I can't say for sure...
Nova: But based on the information I have, I think we should probably consider Alita's current body Imaginos 2.1!!
Nova: Her ability to process information and her energy level have risen by an order of magnitude!!
Box: Nova X

Page 06
Nova: Her tail is an instinctive expression of her vitality and emotions...

Nova: And her wings are an expression of her strong will that surpasses all limits!!

Nova: That is my interpretation.

Marge: You're saying that's the shape of her spirit?

Nova: We are all prisoners inside the cages of our own flesh.

Nova: And I am plotting a jailbreak...
Nova: I have long been engrossed in the pursuit of unleashing the mind.
Nova: This specimen named Alita might be a glimmer of hope for us prisoners.

Page 07
Nova: Instead of being swallowed by the darkness of her subconscious, Alita retained her self-control...
Nova: By strengthening that subtle balance, she is becoming closer to her true self...!!

Nova: ...That...
Nova: Is my guess!!

Marge: You've lost me.
Marge: I don't know much about science or a warrior's life.

Marge: But...
Marge: Do you think this will make her happy?

Page 09
Payne: So you've finally made your decision...

Payne: And I warned you so many times too...
Payne: How does it feel to be an unnatural abomination?
Box: Colonel Payne

Alita: I've broken free.
Alita: It's actually quite refreshing.

Payne: Don't try and act tough.
Payne: There's nowhere for you to call home anymore!!

Page 10
Payne: Nobody will love you now.
Payne: The only people who will approach you are enemies who want to destroy your power out of fear, or schemers who will try to use it for their own ends.

Payne: There's nobody you can trust.
Payne: You're alone, just like an old grave!!

Alita: Whatever.
Alita: I'm used to being alone.

Payne: Oh?
Payne: Then...

Page 11
Payne: Why are you crying?

Alita: This is just coolant...

Alita: I've made my decision.
Alita: I won't look back!

Sechs: Haaaaaaaaah!

Gerambo: After witnessing Alita's resurrection, the other members of the space angels are launching a fierce counterattack!!

Page 16

Gerambo: Master Sechs' expand punch barrage!!

Gerambo: He's being pushed back!!
Gerambo: Zekka is being pushed back!!

SFX: scree

Derossi: Wow! Wow! Look at Sechs!
Derossi: At this rate he can win! Right, Pops?
Box: Assistant engineer: Derossi

Yani: I dunno...

Yani: That kid did manage to phase-change the Fizziroy body.
Yani: So his power and speed are probably higher than Zekka's old-model body.
Yani: As far as specs go anyway.
Box: Sechs' personal engineer: Yani

Page 17
Yani: But Zekka's true power is a lot scarier than this!
Yani: He's the master of an ancient karate style and he's had over 100 years of combat experience...
Yani: Even though he has the heart of a mischevious child, anyone will admit that he's in a class of his own when it comes to martial arts. He won't be dealt with so easily!!

Yani: Kid...
Yani: Why won't you attack the weak point I told you about!?

Sechs: Hahaha! Go ahead and counterattack if you can!!

Zekka: I see...
Zekka: It must be nice to be so young!!

Page 18

Page 19
Sechs: Wha!?

Sechs: Sh...Shit!

Page 20
Zekka: All right...

Zekka: This is way more comfortable.

Zekka: I was wondering what a phase-changed new-model body is capable of...
Zekka: So I played with you a little bit while I was taking off my shoes.

Zekka: But now I'm done.

Sechs: Done!?
Sechs: What does he mean "I'm done"!?

Zekka: What's the matter, bitch?
Zekka: Come here... I'll show you my karate.

Page 21
Sechs: Like hell you're "done"!!

Page 22
Gerambo: Ah!! A double punch counter!?

Hopper: A couple punch...!!
Hopper: It looks like Zekka's finally going for the kill!!

*Couple: An ancient karate technique or stance that uses both hands together (TN: Kanji are literally "husband and wife")

Page 23-24

Page 25
Zekka: Most enemies would be broken into little bits by now... You sure are a persistent bastard.

Zekka: So you're gonna try to inflate your body and absorb the shock from the punch again?

Zekka: I wonder how many hits you can take!

Yani: Let me tell you the weak point on Zekka's Fizziroy body...

Page 26
Yani: The maintenance bolts all over the outside of his body.

Sechs: So I just have to whack those!?
Yani: No! Actually, they're designed so that if you hit them they just become harder.

Yani: Sorta like peeling a hard-boiled egg, you apply a moderate amount of force and then...

Yani: Input up-right-down-left-up-down-right-up-down-left-up-down-up-down-down-up-up-down
Sechs: How the fuck am I supposed to remember that during a fight!?

Yani: Don't worry, I'm just messin' with ya...

Yani: It's about Zekka's mysterious ultimate technique, "Dragonslayer".
Yani: I think I've got it figured out!!

Page 27
Yani: He's changed the structure of his circulatory system and created a torus-shaped circuit in his lower abdomen... In other words, a miniature particle accelerator.
Yani: He collides elementary particles in there and produces antimatter over a long period of time.

Yani: "Dragonslayer" is probably a move where he releases all the antimatter from his fist!!

Sechs: Um... I don't understand any of this...
Yani: When he said "It's always overkill" he wasn't just bragging.

Yani: If he used it, the antimatter annihilation would destroy not only his opponent...
Yani: But all of Ketheres!!

Yani: Your target is this particle accelerator...the "navel reactor".
Yani: This isn't part of the original body, so he must have to try pretty hard to keep it that way.

*Antimatter: As opposed to "true matter", antimatter is composed of particles with reversed quantum numbers. When matter and antimatter touch, they create a huge explosion which converts all of their mass into energy. This process is called "antimatter annihilation".

Page 28
Sechs: Navel reactor, huh...

Sechs: I don't care if it's antimatter or strange matter or whatever...
Sechs: This is my only chance!!

Page 29-30

Page 31
Zekka: An implosion punch...!?
Zekka: Using the energy of my own attacks...!!

Sechs: Here, let me repay you for all those punches.
Sechs: You can keep the change!!

Text: Sechs' focus pays off!!

That was fast! Thanks a lot!

Now, my comments:

Page 4
Nora's surname is transcribed as Rafuargu in GLO01 and as Defarge in GLO09. A third spelling will make me crazy. I vote for keeping the first one, Rafuargu.

Page 05
Marge: Last time she came back with a tail, this time with wings... it's certainly pretty... (it's is a singular expression, while the noun wings is plural…)
Marge: But I feel as if something else about her has changed as well... actually it worries me a bit. (it is a conjunction)

Nova: But based on the information I have, I think we should probably consider Alita's current body Imaginos 2.1!! (missing comma)

Page 16
Gerambo: This is way beyond Gavit's "Phalanx" from before! (that is presented in GLO04, page 89; the character is Gavit of Gadokai)
Gerambo: Master Sechs' expanded punch barrage!! (if I understood it well)

The assistant's name is Derossi.

Page 17
Yani: Even though he has the heart of a mischevious child… (no reason for the contraction)

Page 19
Sechs: Sh...Shit!? (missing punctuation)

Page 20
Zekka: What's the matter, bitch? (missing comma)

Page 25
Zekka: Most enemies would be broken into little bits by now...You sure are a persistent bastard. (indefinite article)

Page 26
Yani: No! Actually, they're designed so that if you hit them they just become harder. (punctuation)

Wow, the progression is finally picking up quick. It looks like the tournament may finally come to a close.
I've always thought that Sechs had it in him to win, here's hoping the next chapter doesn't flip the coin again.

Thanks for the fast translations!

I agree with Sergio, actually the french version which is usually quite accurate to the original manga in terms of names, uses the name "Lafargues" for Nola which is simply the french spelling of Rafuargu.
But I think in the topic for the names where moooV is complaining with this kind of thing, I think he will not agree at all because it comes from the wrong "not Viz" translation.

Interesting. The Viz's spelling is Lafargue, but I insist we have already had different spellings, we don't need to complicate the onomastics.

Don't be so severe. moooV is simply asking for a standard. Aren't we asking for the same?

I thought Nola Defarge was the name that Viz used, where does Lafargue come from? They have flip flopped on other names (e.g. Rem Ray is later written as Rem Rei and at one point Esdoc is called Esdock by Ido  ), so I'm curious as to where the mismatch here is.

I haven't the slightest idea.

I've never noticed such misspellings.

Since you asked... ;)

-Vol. 3, p. 52: "Esdock Motors' Number 99, Alita..."
-Compare LO Vol. 3, p. 169 with LO Vol. 10, p. 88; note that the translation hosted here spells it as Rey, but in the Viz version it's Rei

Just an observation: I've learned not to care about uppercase/lowercase, simply because it will be entirely indifferent to the final edition. Only uppercase is used, anyway. 8)

Oh, that! I had understood you meant Viz had used two different spellings.

They did, I was pointing out where you can find the examples I cited of their occasional inconsistency.

Added changes to the OP.

Nora's name should be Lafargue. Seeing as it's likely a name of French origin, I trust the French translation to get it right. I understand that it makes it inconsistent, but it's just a matter of correctness. Rafuargu is nothing more than direct phonetic translation from Japanese, and Defarge is just a mistake.
Marge: Last time she came back with a tail, this time with wings... it's certainly pretty... (it's is a singular expression, while the noun wings is plural…)
This is actually a common breaking of the rules so to speak. Imagine it as an answer to the question "What is it this time?".
Gerambo: Master Sechs' expanded punch barrage!! (if I understood it well)
The name for the technique that I have been using is "expand punch", because he expands and punches at the same time, although grammar has little to do with technique names in the first place.
Sechs: Sh...Shit!? (missing punctuation)
I think just an exclamation point will suffice for the nuance I'm trying to convey.

Also on page 15

Gerambo: He's being pushed back!!
Gerambo: Zekka is being pushed back!!

Is it possible to make that "Zekka" emphasized in some way? The best translation relies on the intonation of the sentence to convey the meaning, but if it can't be done I think it would be better to translate it as "The undefeated Zekka".

I've only noticed now... Targa, you don't translate the little reminders about each character ? Should we remove the little characters' icons ?

i concur but it means more editing work, to recreate the hidden picture... let's keep them, it's only one time per character, not really an issue if you consider the time needed (a lot, i tell you)

removing them is "more than the author himself" behavior, hence wrong.

It will indeed be a lot of work removing them.
I think of leaving them for phase releases.
When the volume gets out we can replace those with scans from the book that almost certainly won't contain those boxes.

Maybe we're talking about different things. The explanations for the characters are all in the margins, there would be no redrawing required.

I was talking about the little icons outside of any frame, like page 06's icons for Alita and Nova X. Removing them requires 2 seconds of Eraser Brush.

HumanRage and Ripper are talking about the rectangle reminding characters' names, like page 01 for Kaos... cigar dude, teenage girl and the dog... Removing these rectangles wasn't what I planned, and it can take quite some time, depending on the picture.

Oh, I see... Sorry, I never read the translation until the release, to keep the suspense whole :).

So, I've kept the little icons, but ***someone*** didn't put the texts... :) Well, I'll let them for ch102, we'll see what Crazyankan decides.

Wait no...Ok...

The character profiles that are on the sides of the page, I did not translate, and should be removed. The character names in the boxes in-panel are translated and should not be removed.
