Alita is born!

Post by kamugin »

Hello friends

It was a long time since I last posted something in this forum. Partially it was because I'm lazy, however the main reason, surprising as it may be, it is because my interest in our worshipped manga dropped a lot, I didn't like the Figure + Ido arch and the dismaying news about the premature end of the manga didn't help too, however it is a discussion for another time.

The reason I'm posting now is a great news: my daughter, my first child, was born last October 18 of 2013! She came quite late in my life, I'm 41 years old since last November 05 and I've been married for twelve years now. She is a healthy child and is developing very well, she is five months and eight days today. Sure I should have told you people much sooner, actually that was my intent, however a child causes a big turmoil in our lives, it's a big change, and I've been delaying this post since then. Lack of time, lazyness and depression, specially depression. I'll come back to it later.

As you sharp people may have deducted by the title of the post, I gave my girl the name of my favourite manga heroine of all time: Alita! Here is a picture of her birth certificate: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kamugin/10969691295/
Her first name, Júlia, is because of me, Júlio César (this is my actual name). Júlia, daughter of Júlio, like the old Romans used to name their daughters as a derivative of the father's name. "Júlia" was a request of her mother, I'm not that conceited
Her second name is Alita, in homage to our greatest heroine. I know that Alita original name, the one given by Kishiro, is Gally. Don't remind me of that, it's pointless, to me and to thousands of others, she will be always Alita! Here's a picture of the child in question: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kamugin/13420430073/ She is such a cutie, isn't she?

About the depression, it wasn't because of Júlia Alita (this name may sound a little odd, but we don't care). I've been suffering of depression since my late teens, I take medicines in a daily basis, and from time to time it gets worse. Even there was an occasion that I was boxed in a clinic for one week. I never attempted suicide though, but the idea is very recurrent in my thoughts. I love my wife, I love my daughter and I love my brother, however sometimes they aren't enough to supress my sadness, despair and frustration so the idea of putting an end to it all is very tempting. However I'm also a coward and/or I never reached yet the feeling of such self disaffection that enables a person to give up its own life. Or whatever a suicide feels before taking the final step.
Spare me of the God an religion crap, we are way above it, aren't we?

That's all, bye.

Congratulations of becoming the father of a healthy daughter.
And congrats to the wife as well!

In ways it's awesome you called her Alita.
Be sure to point out where her middle name came from when she gets older.
Just don't go overboard and get her chip-tuned in the future.
Martial arts however would be cool though.

As for the depression, don't let it get to you.
You have a family, wife and daughter, keep that in mind.

Enjoy the days with your daughter.
Smile when changing those smelly diapers.

Wow, man!
Congratulations! I really wish happiness to all of you.

It's awesome and weird at the same time. I have no words, unbeleivable. You're crazy, man!
Spoiler:
PS.
About depressions: even if it had something to do with you personally - just let it go, time cures most wounds.

You live in Brazil, everything is colorful and warm - it's enough to look around to forget about depressions.
I see something like this (this image from the internet shows reality exactly) everywhere around me for about 7 months a year and rarely get depressed. Moreover, people around me and myself feel happy simply if the day is sunny.
You should always try to find something that makes you happier even in simple, everyday things and events - starting with a fact that your daughter will live her life in a sunny place. ;)

She's a very pretty little girl!

Everyone is cheering you but as my midewife girlfriend would say: the mother did all the work!! Anyway, congrats to both of you!

When I leave my kid every morning at the day care, it makes me think how sad he would be if I or his mother wouldn't be here for him anymore. That usually gives you enough for going on harder every day.

Thank you ^Ripper, I really appreciate your comments.
For sure she will read Gunnm when she will have enough maturity to savour Yukito's masterpiece.
She will learn martial arts for sure, a woman must know how to protect herself, specially these days, but I don't expect her to be a kunstler or a cyborg hunter warrior, however her granddaughter maybe?

I leave most of the diaper changing to her mother  However until now she feeds only on her mother's milk, so her poo isn't very smelly or nasty.

About the depression, the arrival of this child changed the perspective of my life, I want to see she growing to become a good person, for other people and for our world too, I want to be proud of her, so I must endure my depression another twenty years at least.

Thank you moooV, I appreciate your comments too. However among all the people who knows where the name "Alita" came from, you're the only one who voiced a negative reaction. I don't know about you Russians, however here in Brazil the people like to give "creative" names to their children far, far worse than "Alita". How about "Madeinusa", huh? That is really crazy!
Other names we considered were "Valentina", because of your comrade Valentina Tereshkova, Coraline, Aimeé and Cibele.

I really liked the picture, how lovely and depressing is your place, man!
The stereotypes you know about Brazil are far from the reality, there are much ugliness under this shiny sun. Most of us don't go to the beach every sunny hot day. About the heat, I can't stand it. In Rio de Janeiro, where I was born, in high summer is so hot that many times I felt dizzy walking outside under the sun and had horrible headaches. Temperatures around 40°C ~ 45°C are common. This is exactly how you feel feeling cold most of the time, isn't it? Here in Brasília where I've been living for the last fourteen years is less hot than Rio, around 36°C ~ 38°C in the summer, however during four months in the year there is a dry season when there's no rain at all, zero, and the humidity drops below 20%, this is another kind of torture.

I would trade a bit of your cold for a bit of my heat any time

Thank you Sam. As I wrote before, a child puts someone's life under a new perspective. It's exactly like you wrote, it would be very sad for her growing without a father, even if it is a so-so father like me.

I didn't mean any negative reaction, only positive - I've just said that I'm surprised and impressed. Don't get it wrong, please!
Spoiler:
By the way, about the weather.

It's not cold here: I live in a city with a mild climate - it's not hot in the summer (20-25 degrees Celsius in average) and it's not cold in winter (about minus 5-15 degrees average). As a downside, the sky is usually overcast seriously and the snow is nearly melted and very dirty, mixed with mud and traffic dirt - that picture from my previous post perfectly represents the usual scenery I see all the time around me.

What about names: I have a weird thing happening too.
My girlfriend's name is gramatically bi-gender, but it's also a common male name, which is extremely rarely used by women. That's why people usually ask me "LOL, are you gay??? " when I tell them my girlfriend's name and I always have to explain them that she's a female.

@moooV underneath:
Spoiler:
Makes me glad i live in The Netherlands.
Bit more open minded about homosexuality and other things.
And yes, from what i read in the media and the recent Ukraine problems, Russia is becoming a scary place to live.

Still...

First, I don't want to lie to people - I'm straight (I like females and not males) and I don't want to form a wrong opinion.

Second: due to a homophobic society, strong anti-homo propaganda and a direct law-level ban on such topics (if someone takes your opinion for a homo propaganda, you can go to jail for 2 years) telling such thing will have consequences starting from an open despise and hatred towards you to calling a policeman.

Beleive me, telling such thing is an easy way to make enemies, and, in some cases, go to jail). Everything said above is also applicable to any political point of view, which differs from official.

PS.
During the last two years (and, especially, last month) this country and society have rapidly turned fascists - it really looks very similar to Germany'37 from the inside. And I fear it a lot - I have a real chance of being repressed for political reasons and this chance is increasing every day.
Júlia, daughter of Júlio, like the old Romans used to name their daughters as a derivative of the father's name.
Beleive it or not - just an interesting fact: here in Russia the second name is assigned authomatically as a father's name with a special ending, which is used if someone wants to call you politely/be official. Also, it cannot be changed.

I am late, but let me register my best wishes and my congratulations on your fatherhood.
As to the depression, as a father you will have no reasons to feel that way for some years. :good:

Actually such a tradition existed in Portuguese but it disappeared. Mariano/Mariana would be Maria's children (the only case of a female root, due to our Catholic roots), the same way Juliano/Juliana would be Júlio's children. The suffix -ano/ana is equivalent to Russian -evitch/evna or the like. Anyway, as I said, it disappeared, so you will find Fabiano who is not son of Fábio, Antonina who is not daughter of Antônio and so on.

Thank you, Sergio. I was about to ask if you still were a regular in this forum, it's good to talk to you again.

For many years I thought that the numerous demands of rising a child would be overwhelming to me and could aggravate my depression, I only resigned myself because my wife was very sad about not having a child and many times she cried seeing the children of others. I still fear the future when I think about all the challenges we will have to overcome from now on. I was never enthusiastic about babies or children before, I can even say that I had an aversion to them, but after the arrival of my daughter the oddity I felt was gradually fading and one day I surprised myself when I realized that I like her, she conquered me  However she still is much like a new "pet" I'm yearning for when we will able to talk to each other, I have so many things I want to teach her.

Don't worry, I had no hard feelings.
Minus 5°C~15°C by average!? That may not be cold by Russian standards, but a Brazilian would die almost instantly if exposed to such low temperatures!

Your place is overcast most of the time, huh? That sure is depressing. One of the few good things we can say about Brasilia is that the sky is indeed very beautiful. The city is localized in the central plateau of the country, about 1000m above sea level. There are no mountains or other elevations obstructing the view all around the horizon, so the view of the sky is privileged plus rarely is overcast here.

Just out of curiosity, your girlfriend name is?
I think that there aren't unisex names in Portuguese as far I can remember.

I knew about that Russian custom, such name is called patronymic. Originally "Júlia" is a patronymic too, also are "Adriana" or "Augusta", however while in Russian the patronymic is the middle name, to the Roman women it was their first name. The Roman society was very patriarchal. By today standards this custom would be considered male chauvinism, however nowadays the origin of such names is unknown to the most of the people and those are very common female names.

The only difference between us is the skin color - any Russian would die too, if exposed to these temperatures. That's why the humanity has invented the warm clothes!

What about the climate: my city is geographically located in Northern European part - I'm sure that guys like ^Ripper and Crazyankan live in a very similar climate. Moreover, I sometimes see negroes from the Central Africa in my university and they don't look like they're suffering from cold.

And, finally, about the gradations of cold in my city:

-20 is considered cold;
-30 is very cold, happens about once in three years, schools are closed at this temperature;
-40 is fucking cold, happens about once in five years.
I have never witnessed -45 and lower.

By the way, Moscow is about 5 degrees warmer, because it's located about 1000km to the south from my city. And some truly northern cities like Norilsk and Murmansk are 20 degrees colder than mine and are officially considered an ice hell - people who live there meet their retirement at 45 year age.
Spoiler:
PS.
The name is Slava.
