The places that Figure Four walks through are real and make for a good day trip.
Where he talks to the Barjack guy in the ruins, he is in the Mojave Desert where General Patton Trained his Africa Corps before they shipped over seas. The ruins are there to see. Where he camps by the tracks that he is told to follow are by the Mormon Rocks on Hwy 38 off I15 You can park and see the place where his camp would have been.
There are remenates of a town along the river on the old highway.
This looks like the one the Barjack was leaning out of talking to Figure.

To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

If someday I win the lottery and get the chance to go over there, I'll surely look for this places. Sadly I live in the other side of the continent...
What do we desire of life in this world?
What do we desire?
What do we have to show for ourselves?
We accomplish nothing if we fear failure.
If only we could be
stronger...

It is healthy to be a little paranoid about going out there, but there are rangers patrolling, and they do pull you over and make shure you have water and a cellphone. When in the National Guard I was a survival/survival equipment specialist. I took people out there fot training. You would be surprised how long you could survive. Primarily you travel at night! Still hotter than all getout till about 2:AM.
