I do see your point, but I feel it would take the long route. True this is just chapter 2, but YK could summer them up in a page of flashback during training

As for pacing, you go from being put in the orphanage to the next chapter

All the previous flashbacks were very short and episodic, showing that Alita's memory still had massive gaps. Having something longer and more sustained hints that it is recovering even it's the brain bio-chip.

Unless back on Earth Figure is wondering WTF is she going through now all of a sudden.

she is that young a child ! or she may lose memories due to horrific training at grunthal, who knows.

@AR-99 For the pacing you are right is not slow but , my problem is it is kind of pointless what happend here in this 2 chapters, I don't see the point of it. Becose it is a flashback we know how is going to end. It is kind like watching the battle with Legolas in the hobbit and trying to get interested , we know he lives on. If this ends up simply that in chapter 3 they go away , wha was the point of chapter 1 and 2?

We cannot say it will happen the way you say, but even if it does, chapters 1 and 2 have been useful to let us understand better Erica's personality. I agree the character has already been presented in a few pages in Last Order volume 1, but the way she is a strong character, I believe Kishiro wants to give us a more detailed idea, even because such an exceptional child would become the fateful Frau X.

^Not just Erica, it also opens up the possibilities to explore how Alita went from this very insecure 3 year old war orphan who still can't fully control her cyborg body to the person chosen (not Erica) to carry out Operation Maulwurf. Also, how and why Gelda took them both under her wing and if this is a rare case, since Kunstlers have shown that they are otherwise extremely ruthless in battle and willing to take on suicide missions.

The flashbacks are helpful but their disjointed and episodic nature doesn't work for a more sustained narrative that will fully explain multiple things. That is what YK appears to be doing and has likely thought about for years, but not been previously able to fully present (there is the BG info from Martian Memory that has been adapted) until now.

Right, the question is, to what degree is Alita's memory returning or will return by the end of Mars Chronicle? Will she actually recall what happened after Gelda showed up as we've seen, or is that for the readers only?

As for the memory loss, there was that burning up in reentry and crashing near Star City.

I hope HOPE yk screws James Cameron and makes a better, Hollywood-wants-it-NOW chapter. Four or five tankoubans worth, just in her teen years...Panzer Kunst + Twilight could be insanely awesome.

"Gun.Dream::The Martian Chronicles.01" as a movie title is about the most badass movie I can imagine. The Panzer Kunst has been setup as a Jedi Killer, and I want to see it in its prime, in all its glory. (Even if she has surpassed it today, to see it depicted in widespread martial conflict could be insane.)
