I spent about twenty minutes to observe this image the first time I saw it. The balance of light is interesting. The dark man in the dark is the personification of evil, and his simple presence is a menace. The girls are illuminated, not receiving but irradiating light, transmitting an aura of innocence. Even Rena, whose hair is dark, has it whitened, giving the idea that the light comes from the inside.
I am not an art expert, so I cannot say if that is considered chiaroscuro, but the contrast is impressive.
