Gunnm - Mars Chronicle 024 (part 1) Is out!

Post by FluffyMcMittens »

And it gets weirder and weirder...
I hope this doesn't get as long winded as the vampire arc.

Hi all! I'm new as an official member, but definitely not new as a guest to this site or Battle Angel! I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions, and start off by saying that I absolutely love Mars Chronicles, I truly think it's some of Kishiro's darkest, almost Chronenbergesque work since "Angel of Redemption," the chapter from the original series which had me fall in love with Battle Angel and Kishiro's visionary storytelling in the first place.... Like everyone here I also am tormented by questions at this point! I agree that this is turning out to be about as drawn out as the vampire arc, but with one very notable difference for me in particular, being that much unlike the vampire story I am really really loving this! One of my favorite aspects of Kishiro's artwork has always been his visionary panoramas, with architectures and costumes and landscapes that are so alien yet so familiar and human at the same time. Also how quickly he can transport the reader from such a vast outer panorama, to the darkest most perverse interiors of the human psyche in a matter of a vignette or two. I definitely suspect that "the mask tumor" has something to do with what will eventually be known as the "berserker cells." I'm dying to see Kagura's transformation, mostly because I'm not ashamed to admit here that much like Muster, I probably have women problems! In this last chapter, although supposedly neither in Muster's memories, nor directly about Muster, rather "how he came to be," it clearly seems that the so called man who returns to wife and child must be him! Anyway, this is painful to wait on, I should almost forget about the story altogether and return to it in about a year so that I don't have to wait so painfully for so little more of the thickening plot!

Nice to see more people joining this forum, I feel like most have left this forum already LOL. But seriously I personally think the story is getting dark, but I also feel like personally the author hasn't balanced this story with light hearted moment so far. It is one dark moment after another. I liked battle angel for its contrast of dark moment with light moment that are uplifting or filled with hope. I didn't read this chapter and I'm not planning as I am just waiting for more chapters to pile up, also I think Kishiro is aware of the story's direction and at the same time he is playing around with the readers expectation as some authors like to do that. Also I'll give him credit for always trying to be bold since he likes to do something new rather than going to a safer and formulaic approach.

Interesting hipotesys. I don't think so, anyway, because beserker cells are a product of nanotechnologies, before they where banned by Ladder (and part of the reason why they did so). Unless maske tumor is an artificial condition based on nanotechnologies too. But i hope not so. That would make Gally even one level more "artificial" and too little of human.

Besides, she would have had a sort of "mental integration" with the berserker body when she wore it, and that didn't happen.

I'm amazed no one has noticed the maske tumor was hinted before it was revealed as the the trapped was in a ruin called merli jota. Which translate to human face and it seems to be organic and not mechanical

Hi all! Well, the reason I suspect that there's a connection between the maske tumor and what eventually become berserker cells, is somewhat philosophical.... It has something to do with the treasure as well I suspect, which is the secret of eternal life.... I'm being broad and vague and probably missing key details, but in a nutshell, the paradox of cancer cells, or tumors, is that they are the essence of life in rogue form, that end up destroying rather than sustaining. so while berserker cells are the product of nanotechnology, my suspicion is that the technology was based on this organic model, mimicking it's behavior. At the same time, I could be wrong, but this "treasure," might also hold the key to how residents of Venus and other worlds will eventually be able to live for centuries unless killed.

But, as far as the actual moment I made the connection between the maske tumor and the berserker cells, which if I'm not wrong, was always known to be a martian technology, was when Kagura's hideous arm was revealed from behind the curtain. That was when I actually thought there might be a connection, because it had the same formless out of control growth as one of Zapan's "tenticles."
