I know I said I wasn't going to read this series for a while and I couldn't resist in caving in reading one more chapter before I do, as I want to comment I like how philosophical this chapter has been lately. Looking in retrospect in some of the chapter on what author is trying to convey, the themes and story is done quite nicely and it really shows how scary and dark the human psyche can become through environment, events and desperate attempt to find their twisted, dark and false truth . Very tragic stuff going on. I hope the author gives Muster story a satisfying conclusion. :D

Also glad the author didn't go for the "blaming the world" route, I don't mind it but it is something I seen very frequently in terms of a persons motivation of becoming more cynical.

I dare say that this arc is extremely violent - both psychologically and physically, and the final image in this chapter shows that with an expressive strength.
Fortunately, the narrative quality makes it readable.

This is fine horror stories I guess (not my cup of tea though), but I'm seriously losing track about what the chronicles is even about now. Feels like those stories could be part of a standalone horror project, like Ito's stuff.

Wish there was more uplifting moments to balance out like how the author does in the old arcs but so far I can't think of anything that was uplifting at the moment the story is becoming quite cynical lately. Not that it is bad but it doesn't give you a good feeling but instead a rather sad and depressing feeling to it. Also Mars Chronicle has spawn so much death count within 24 chapters. I personally think Mars Chronicles is darker than the latest berserk arc at the moment

Personally seeing that last page has given me an impact as it is shock value done right. The author in my opinion is always good at panelling. Also can't wait to see if Nollin is actually still alive and seeing how Muster will react to that fact. I want to let more chapter pile up but at the same time I love the series so much I could easily cave in reading more chapters in a monthly/bi-weekly basis. Haven't seen a character this psychologically damaged since Kaede in Elfen Lied.

Also Sergio if you like manga where they show human psyche. I suggest reading Real. About wheelchair basketball players and shows the psychological of the players condition very heartrending and deep

Also I just thought of something, what if as long as the main head isn't cut off or destroyed than the maske tumor gives some sort of regeneration ability, I mean after all Muster seems to be cheating death lately

Ok, I'll bite: Why are that lady and her daughter naked in the last page? Is that implying that Muster abused them or something?

Probably Muster, besides being a scoundrel, is also an artist and decided to make a renaissance sculpture.

Can't imagine it's a popular opinion, but I think Muster's backstory is more engaging than just about anything in this manga since... the start of Last Order!
Not that it is bad but it doesn't give you a good feeling but instead a rather sad and depressing feeling to it.
I won't disagree with that, but I guess that's the point of this arc.

As a horror movie buff I found these previous developments reminiscent of the "torture porn" subgenre that got popular in the aftermath of Saw, Hostel etc, about ten years ago. The torture he had to endure was one of the most bone-chilling and disturbing descriptions of pain and the psychical effects of suffering I can remember having read in a manga. I also think it's an interesting story of why some people turn evil. Not because they're genetically developed that way, but because ugly circumstances push them to the point they no longer care. It's not a very original concept of course as there are plenty of villain backstories in fiction, but I found his descent into madness and insanity harrowingly fascinating - how an originally nice guy ends up willingly turning completely over to the dark side.

The sociopolitical setting on Mars also seems to be inspired by he Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Germany which makes this, underlined by the tragedy in this latest chapter, feel like an utterly devastating fairytale as penned by the Grimm brothers.

Believe it or not when i was reading people's comments in kissmanga and other forum/blog fans of the series seem to be enjoying this arc lately. They certainly enjoy this more than last order due to how it had a tournament arc (ZOTT) which many people hate and what cause Last Order to become very polarised.

I like how he became Muster by showing his psyche as it reveals when you lose everything friends, family members you lose yourself in this abyss of nihilism. Most writers I know when they make this kind of character, they will make him/her think they are on the side of justice with more ruthless methods used. Though I imagine later when he finds out Nollin is still alive he will have some regrets and probably realise his punishment was not saving Nollin and assuming she died. This arc is better than most manga I read right now.

I can't help think Itall becoming a villain remind of joker backstory in killing joke though Itall is better as KIlling Joke was overrated for me.

Well the krista Morten doesn't turn clothes into stone, and when he reveals the maske tumor to the family they were shocked as that is most likely why they look terrified and then Muster being the sadistic man he is turned them into stone at that specific moment when they are scared. Then he removes the clothes of the now statue family to let anyone who discover it be shocked most likely.

I don't agree. That would be a great mistake by the author. When you are dressed, you have the clothes marking your body, specially (but not only) underware. Lotte has no mark of underpants, and the lady has no mark of brassière. In short, they were naked when they were petrified.

Not to mention that, when someone is petrified their bodies become extremely fragile. Any attempt to undress a victim from the Krista Morten will result in their destruction.

I don't know, I think it's weird that Muster ask them to undress just to touch them with his "magic cane". But, who knows? maybe the guy was in the mood for a thresome :P

He didn't ask them to undress. He probably undressed them by force - or had Miguel to do it. They are in panic, and a terrorized mother is trying to protect her only child. Their expressions are a picture of despair and hopelessness. Muster succeeded in picturing a masterpiece.

As I saw it he simply petrified them , they had eat the "nanomachine/posion" maybe the morning before in the jam , just like Ericka did. And it then activated them by ultrasound there is no need of touching. As for the clothes , I believe they where petrified dressed but when the castle came down the wind destroyed the cloth. Or he simply removed the cloth after being petrified. :geek:

When you remove clothes from a broken limb or a bad injury you just cut them open by scissors. Very easy.

Removing the clothes is easy, removing the marks is impossible.

There's no doubt in my mind that Muster had them take their clothes off before petrifying them.... Any gruesome detail is left for our own interpretation, which only adds to the chill factor!

I think he wears their clothes, too in some kind of dubious toy-storytype of side story, were B.A. characters all of a sudden come to live when the artist (or anyone else) isn't drawing them.

I'm pretty sure that earlier in the series Muster is about to petrify someone and he asks them to remove their clothes as they will make a prettier statue. I'd have to dig through them to find the exact panel.

I was talking over some of this series with my daughter today, trying to put the threads together. I think, overall, where we're going with this, so to find out what the lead up is to Alita and Erica being in that downed ship, and being forced to walk across the land mined desert. When Alita starts remembering her past, it always starts there. And we really mostly see what happens from then on. Even with the start of this arc, we only see what happens right after this, leading up to Alita and Erica being split up. How they got there is still an enigma.

Even because we still have to know how Yoko was born (if she was really born) and how she lost her family (or whatever we would call it). Is she just a Kagura's tit or is she Nollin's daughter?

I'm honestly curious to know that too. I've been wondering for a while if the girls happened to be in that children massacre by chance or if they where meant to be killed for who they are. Maybe an order from Kagura.
