Viz media were the first translators of the series and they changed some names, to try to make the names more eye catching as they thought battle angel alita sounds interesting and it does compare to gunnm and gally to alita as well once again to make it eye catching, and also changing zalem/jeru to tiphares/kethares. Viz media back in the early days was known to doing this frequently including the quite controversial choice of flipping reading right to left to the opposite direction instead which some manga artist was not happy with this localisation choice.
