Second Trailer for the Movie

Post by Silvery »

Not sure if it warrants a new topic, but it's not like we're a super active forum, so it's not exactly spamming. ;)

Gotta say, I went in with clenched teeth, but it turned out to be... surprisingly acceptable? I mean, sure, it's still a chaotic mishmash of various elements from the manga, there's still the typical Hollywood subtlety, and the eyes are still super bad, but otherwise I'm starting to feel that it might not be as bad as GitS.

Hi guys, if you haven't seen yet, here I let you the 20th Century Fox interview with Cameron, Rodriguez and Salazar talking about the film, main characters and where came the idea to mashup Gunnm into a single movie. (D̶e̶l̶ ̶T̶o̶r̶o̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶v̶o̶l̶v̶e̶d̶) :)

Right now I am not feeling very well and I still have some unfinished work to do, so I will not write an in depth analysis. The "alien creature" looks less bad, still it isn't Alita. Everything else is the same as before: too many elements crammed in just one movie and too many unjustifiable changes. I am far from being sold yet, probably I will just fast forward a camrip after the release. :|

One thing more I need to mention: the fight scenes aren't good, her moves are too slow.

I don't like it at all, it's so wrong and far from the original. It's like these two old anime series, but with great visuals. Sooo wrong.
And the eyes. The eyes.

Anyway, I don't want to think about it. That's all I wanted to say.

UPD.
A day has passed and the trailer is everywhere on the social networks. I've read some comments underneath it, and, well, as I've previously said - the main opinion is "Why are they making movie of that crap?". Of course they're talking about the anime, only a trace amount of them know about manga.

Looks like I was right all along from the beginning.

My thoughts so far:

why is there a forest in a post apocalyptic world, Alita using meotode feels off for me, hoping the story is not too romance focused, James Cameron doesn't usually have deep villains and I hope Alita Battle Angel doesn't make one dimensional villains, as seeing Vector and hearing Desty Nova portrayal is already making me sad as they most likely degrade him into a one dimensional villain as well. Sad that Jashugan won't be in this film.

Those are my nitpicks, trailers are just a first impression experience, I hope the movie will be more deeper than I hope, as I'm not expecting much. Sometimes it's possible compelling story without being faithful to the source material. How to train your dragon movies are brilliant and even surpass the source material so it might be possible

Um, well, I think it promises to be better than the manga, because story is made like one and not vol-by-vol. If it is longer than 2 hours, it should be fine. Assuming, that Jashugan part of the arc will be saved for sequel.

Changes look fine. Like, Alita found the body. That is way better than Ido getting it out of nowhere, exactly when he needed it. Some changes, like forrest, needs to be explained, of course.

Fights are fast enough to me, because they also need to convey the impact and get faster later on. Can't remember fight scenes with such speed, anyway.

Vector does not look like a one-dimensional villain, because of his speech about natural order and he does not have that typical villain look. I meam, actors are in general fine to me. Still hope other villains will get their own character. I doubt about that hench(wo)man, though.

That trailer was far from "focused on romance" and, as I heard, they said that Hugo has that dark side.

They still have many months to improve CGI. It still looks way better than that horrible Aquaman.

I have not seen comment like "why they are adapting that crap anime" or something. And I doubt it has any meaning, if somebody will write that. It is far from that anime. Probably only similar thing is that they are using Chiren and not using Makaku.

I doubt that they could show funny moments of deckman in that trailer. Different tone. So I still have my hope.

My other hope is that fights will be difficult for Alita. I can say that they did not show that, because it would spoil and Alita needs to shine first in trailers. Also, you can see how different she is with different body. Just like in manga, iirc.

The eyes, on the other hand, are superficial to me, because they do not distract me. Usually I am scared of gigantic eyes and gigantic things in general, but not here.

(I am putting too much hope in that movie)

Well, I got to say I actually liked this trailer. I don't expect it to be like the manga, and i'm curious about watching this take on the story. The eyes didn't even bothered me this time, so I enjoyed it more. I don't think it's the best think I've seen, but I must admit it looks really great.

BTW, I also started to see the trailer everywhere on social media, and my experience is way too different from moooV, I saw many many many good comments, people interested and excited about watching this live action and almost everyone saying it looks awesome, even people from my own country where Alita is only loosely known from the anime. So I think regular people is getting interested in it, which I think is good for me (there's no official GUNNM merch around here, so I hope the movie could change this).

I still have some concerns about the movie (I'm really afraid about that Vector/Nova thing), but at least it seems to be better than I thought at first.

EDIT:
I saw the live interview with Cameron, Salazar, Landau and Rodriguez, and I got a very good vibe about it. It was really nice to hear JC talking about the things he loved from the manga, and even talking about Last Order and how things get really messy further on the story, so they hope to make the sequels. What surprised me the most was Salazar, talking about Kishiro and Alita and how she relates to the character, I don't know, she looked really excited about it.

I love this story so much, I really hope they would get it right, so the world can enjoy it as I do.

another movie that doesn't follow the manga faithfully and is widely considered to be the greatest film of all time is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, except that is an animated film and this movie isn't but, just really goes to show you don't need to follow source material to be good.

I've just read somewhere that Hugo is supposed to teach Alita the basics of motorball. Hrm.

I might be wrong, but I think they meant that the movie itself (or its creators?) literally promises to be something-or-other rather than "it looks more promising than the manga".

Movies itself. Because it combines arc, that MAY make it more complex, thus better, if there will be no problem in pacing, which may aswell serve as build-up for other events.
Original manga in general is pretty fast, so that way it will be improved to me. So, that sentence as a whole was important for the point, and not only that red part.
Well, I explained. Like, founding body like that makes it a better story, TO ME at least.

Also, what is wrong with Hugo teaching basics to Alita? Motorball should be popular there and they will be fans, like, football fans know how to play football, so just teaching basics makes sense. Hugo will be someone who will show here "basics of the world", so falling in love will make more sense.

No, I am not Polish. Cahir is a character from The Witcher book series (Polish book series) and he is my favourite character, hence the name.

We are going off topic here, but let me clarify that the creator of the manga Naisicaä and the director of the animated movie is the same guy! Hayao Miyazaki https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycl ... php?id=180. Both the manga and the movie are good, however I like more the manga since it goes deep into the story, unlike the movie that is kind of a simplified version. I don't know where you got the info that it was the "greatest movie of all time", but to me it is quite an exaggeration!

Things could be far better if Kishiro was the director, or at least the scriptwriter, of the movie. Another good possibility is if the manga got an anime adaptation by Netflix since they did a good job with Knights of Sidonia and Devilman Crybaby.

I always dismay when I see a thinking process that goes strongly against well settled principia. If I were a flat earth believer, maybe I could agree with you.

Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs recently released the results of a poll it had conducted to determine the best anime movies/series.
The Japanese often make those polls and it is for the best ANIME, not for the best movie of all time and yet Nausicaä came in second. Usually I don't care about such lists because they are silly, what may be the best regarding some criteria isn't necessarily the best regarding others.

Yep, you're goddamn right. I met GUNNM thanks to Salfate by the year 2012 when he showed the anime on TV, then I became fan of it. I'm really sure that merch is going to be a real option in our country thanks to this live action. :D

Talking about the trailer, I have to say that It looks great but I'm a kind disappointed, many things were changed in an exaggerated way, seriouly, where did that forest come from? And the other 2 friends of Hugo? minor roles for sure. Alita's berserker body used to be equipped on a dead warrior and so on...

(The eyes didn't bother me this time.)

Maybe in the near future another trailer will give us other impressions.

OFF TOPIC
hahaha great to see you here! I also got to know Alita from Salfate, but in 1994! He showed the OVA in "Maldita Sea", his tv show back then (he showed some great anime, I owe him a lot!). Sure there will be many changes, I even think some of them could make sense, but what bothers me the most is the movie title here in Latin America... Battle Angel: La última guerrera??? What the actual F*ck! I expected at least to see ALITA on the freaking title  I think we should find some fellow chileans and riot in the streets so they keep Alita on the title.

One thing more I need to mention: the fight scenes aren't good, her moves are too slow.
One thing I can confirm from the footage thats being shown at cons is that some of the action is strangely slow and has a terrible flow to it.
For instance the footage of Ido using his rocket hammer are super slow but you see it destroying concrete walls despite its slow speed, it just looks super fake and lacks any impact.

(PS Rodriguez said Deckmen will apparently be in the movie.)

Still not feeling it. It is better in some ways than the first trailers (Zalem, night shots mostly), but that Kuzutestu looks so generic, where is Yukito kishiro's wild atmosphere? none of the robot has his exotic look to it.
Also that shortcut for the berzerker body... why? Looks like a video game upgrade now.
They have some good points, and some parts are definitely "panel accurate" to the manga, but everything they had to change displease me.
And I'm not warming up to that weird after effect big eye thing.
