Translators and editors needed.

Post by ^Ripper »

With the tools functional, i need translators to translate all the scenes in the game.
This is where most of the work lies.

Go see the sticky with the demo of my translation tool to see it in action and what you can expect.
I've done it, so you can just easely edit scenes with minimal hassle.

If you are willing, register to the forum if needed and drop a message in this thread or private msg me.
I'm only going to allow editors and translators full access to the online tools.
Everyone is free to discuss all the texts that get translated.
I've made a seperate forum for that.
Also the demo has all the current translations, so you can just casually browse if you want.

I'll make a tutorial on how to use it, how the lines are formatted and the tags needed to make it all work.

I hope to hear from you!

Hello ^Ripper,

I'm a big Battle Angel fan and I guess you might say my interest in the series has been renewed since watching the new film. I had only seen the anime (many times) and read part of the manga, but since the film I've just bought the deluxe version of the manga and reading the series in full now. While I was searching for the manga I looked up to see if any games had been released for it and came across the PSX game and your project.

I work on some romhacking projects (mainly for PC-98 and PC games) and I am able to edit graphics if you are in need of someone to help assist with that. I could also be a beta tester since I have a modified PS One and a PSX Classic I could play the ISO on.

Please let me know if you think I would be able to help out in any way?

Hi there.

Sorry for the late reply.

Thanks for the offer on helping on the game.
We can always use people for beta testing the game.
However we are currently a bit stuck on lack of Jap-ENG translators.
The tools for game modifications are mostly done.
Image-wise the game is pretty much an open book with the .TIM files.

Nice sites btw on the romhacking.
Loved the read about the text encodings and how they used it to format the texts.
A simmilar thing happens here where they used double-byte kanji for texts, and 2x single byte ascii for control characters.
All with a custom image font file and dictionary.

Hi Ripper,

Sure I would be up for beta testing the game and I certainly understand how getting a Japanese to English translator onboard may be a difficult process. I've had some trouble in that regard with my own project for Wander Wonder, a Compile Zelda clone that I've been working on with a few others for years now. We've entered into a position where we can dump the script, reinsert it and edit the graphics, even make a VWF for it, but due to not having a translator the progress just halted completely for awhile, though that may change soon hopefully!

No problem for the links, though *laughs* that was really just a few links I was including in my signature. I run a romhacker's forum (though quite dead now due to tools like Discord now) such as HeroesofLegend.org and I'm the graphic designer for a romhacking group that mainly focuses on PC-98 software, 46okumen.com and my main website as it were (though it should be getting a facelift soon) is retro-type.com.

Speaking of romhacking though, have you made a post over at Romhacking.net forums yet? You could post a thread first explaining a bit about your project and where you currently are at with it, links to your tools and progress or working demos / proof of concept so far and then post a Help Wanted Ad for a translator. I think that now is probably a great time for getting the word out on this since the movie just came out and the Blu-ray release should be coming out soon. The deluxe manga set has also been pretty popular as of late on places like Amazon. People are starting to become familiar with this series again and are probably going to be hungry for more, such as the PSX game.

As for graphic editing, I see that most of the graphic files seem to be in the /TIM directory and are either TIM files or KNJ files. I was trying to convert them to see what was in there when I saw that this had already been done and talked about in one of your forum posts here regarding your tools. So I take in that the TIM files and KNJ files are simply going to be Kanji characters and symbols then? Are there no textures or graphics in the game itself that would need to be translated from Japanese to English?

My last question is, has the PSX game been fully scanned yet and is there a plan to have someone translate and then scanlate that manual into English? I'm a software preservationist and a collector, so if it has not been scanned yet, I'm definitely interested in obtaining a real copy of the game and doing just that.

Thanks!

Just made a translatior wanted request over at romhacking.
Hopefully someone will reply.

The TIM/KNJ combo is the kanji image library with the knj index file.
I plan to strip the TIM/KNJ of everything not lower ascii.
That leaves room for me to "draw" words on places with limited edit space.
The TIM file format is annoying tho. its 4 layers of monochrome images sandwiched together to 1 layer with each indexed pixel color pointing to what layer has the pixel displayed.
Its very clever since you only need a fraction of framebuffer space, but annoying to edit.
I'm still busy with the editor.

There are some images i believe that have text on it, but i have to look.
Havent been on that subject for awhile.

The download package on my site has all there is to the game and has scans.
But no translations have been made to the documentation.
I own the game itself an can make beter scans if needed.

Saw your help wanted ad over at Romhacking.net. I would also consider making a different thread over at the Personal Projects Forum that way you can reference the Help Wanted Ad and provide a URL to it. The beauty of having this Personal Projects thread is that you can share a lot more information about the game and post several screenshots. Romhacking.net users can also comment and post and get excited about the game which could potentially put it on more people's radar that this project is out there.

For example, this is the thread that I put together for Wander Wonder. I didn't have as much traction initially as I thought I would for this game, but I bet Battle Angel Alita would get more hits since it's more relevant now that the movie is out / coming out on Blu-ray next month. If anything it gets people talking about it and bumping it up on the first page of Personal Projects every time someone posts.

I checked out the demo btw and loaded it up on my PS Classic. Really liking what I see so far. I'm curious though, whatever happened to the original translator that was working on this steadily as far back as 2017? https://gunnmmemoriesofmars.wordpress.com/ They seemed very passionate about the project.

In any case, I would love to help on this where I can, which would likely fall into playtesting and graphics. If you have any graphic design edits needed for the game or even a scanlation of the manual, I'd be thrilled to help contribute. I've also ordered a copy of the game which came in today actually. Really impressed with the quality of the color manual. I think that would be well worth scanning and editing into English.

Hello there,
I hear that you are currently looking for translators for your project.

Since I am a huge Alita fan myself and, if I may say so, pretty good with languages.
The languages I am capable of speaking and writing are german and english.
If you still need people to help you out, feel free to message me.

Greetings,

This must be my lucky day.

I've got a message on my request for translators on romhacking.net and Spectrumal wanting to help :)
Thanks for the offer on helping out, if the translator works out then we can start on editing the scripts and play-testing.
Would be great to finally get the ball rolling.

Hey Spectrumal, crazy idea.
When the English patch is done how about a German localized version :)
Any localized version will be easy with the tools i made.

Ok, a list of people on the forum who showed interest in assisting in the project so far:

- ^Ripper (me)
- youngred ( old translator and project starter, has dissapeared )
- MagicHp ( script editing )
- Killy ( script editing )
- Yandritos ( script editing / coding php )
- Efriim ( script editing and basic translation )
- SkyeWelse ( graphics editing )
- Spectrumal ( script editing )

( i hope i didn't forget someone )

Hello there,

I was the one who offered to do the translation for this game after seeing ^Ripper's request for a translator on romhacking.net while casually browsing it.

I hope I can make a translation that does justice to this game and that I can get along well with the rest of the team working on this project.

Greetings,

Unlimited Fragworks.

Hi, the name is Daxin.

I was never really interested in BAA, but everything changed when the fire nation attacked. I was strolling trough my local bookstore when i saw BAA Perfect Edition. Its a german version of the original series in 4 Volumes in really high quality. I didn't buy it but seeing this collection made me curious and i read it online. Three days later i sat at home reading the series a second time, only this time I read it from my new acquired BAA Perfect Edition. I think this was before the movie was released (haven't seen it till now because my body can't handle another bad addaption of a manga/anime). After that, I found Last Order Perfect Edition of which I currenly own 4 volumes with the fifth getting released on September first.

So now I recently discovered that there actually exists a game. I found out the hard way that most anime/manga based games are shit, but this looked really good. I have to play it is what I thought. And now I am here. It seems you are still working on it. Nice.

Ok so the version of your demo I downloaded had "only" translated the first few sentences and the whole menu.
First: I am pretty sure that the guy who translated the game is the same who made this blog https://gunnmmemoriesofmars.wordpress.com/. You could use the translations from there for the first few conversations. It would be better if you contact him asking about peemission, but seeing that his last acticity was at the beginning of 2017 I doubt there will be any response.
Second: I would like to help. I am not really good at programming (had a exam in c programming in my univerity) and my japanese skills I got from watching anime and my 116 day streak at duolingo.
Third: There is a facebook group called Ultima: Square Enix + JRPG's. The creator is the youtuber The Night Sky Prince. Yeah there are mostly FF fans in the group but I assume there are also many anime/manga fans in. Maybe posting there will help you find some help.

Keep up the good work.

Hey there, I was going to pop into the Discord to chat but the invite link appears dead? Or at least it didn't work for me.

I'm a newbie when it comes to Gunnm stuff, though I know it by reputation, but I'm a huge PS1 fanboy and am dying to get my hands into a PS1 translation project. I just got done helping with the Sakura Wars translation for the Sega Saturn, and I'm wrapping up a professional novel translation job. Once that's done (mid-February) I'll have a lot more free time on my hands for new projects. If I start up on this, I'll be splitting my time between 3 translation projects, which is fine because variety is the spice of life and it's always nice to have different projects to swap between when I burn out of translating one or the other.

Anyway, tentative interest. I'd like to play through the game first to see what I'd be working on, and I should probably have an editor who actually knows the series since I'm gonna miss 100% of the references and classic lines and stuff fans of the series will be looking for in the game. But I can give you a solid translation that reads good in English while still keeping the intent of the original.

So yeah kick me a link to that Discord when you have time.

Hello, everyone, I just discovered your forum !!

I had started to create some tools and started to translate the .E and MAP picture. I just discovered your software for translation: I love it !!!! I would never have done so much !!

I am French (thank you google translation) and I would like to help you and ensure the French translation.
My other goal is to hack the game 100% I already create a tool to change the font, a tool to dump MDL files and convert them to obj file and now I work on a tool to dump environments.

I would like to know where you are at the moment, because the previous demo is quite old, and help you to continue.

Thank you for all this work!

Hi there papy31

At the moment the tools are more or less done to translate all in-game texts.
We are just stuck on getting translators so i have decided to do machine translations just to get some texts done.
Any other tools we need to make we will find along the way.

The .E files we have a program to translate the texts as well as to remap any pointers to maximize the amount of text possible in the file.
https://www.rippersanime.info/Gunnm_DEM ... n_DEMO.php
It is a bit hacky, but seems to work.

Like i said to another person who was interested in making it in German.
I can make a translation table in any other language, so it runs parallel to the main English one.

I would love to see what tools you have come up, since mine are written in PHP :P
The forum has some threads where i go in-depth on how to game can be translated, how the script tags work and how the texts are encoded.
It is a bit outdated, most up-to-date is in the Legend of the script editor.

I have updated the demo of the font editor so you can take a look on how i can edit the .KNJ/.TIM files.
https://www.rippersanime.info/Gunnm_DEM ... e=database
The way they made use of the space to encode so many characters is quite nice.

I program in C under linux, My program works directly on the BMP file by generating a grid on the output files to help to locate, and after selected you 4 BMP file, reconvert in TIM. I can send you, if you want.

Dear ^Rippers,

Hope this reaches you well, especially in this dire time with the pandemic.

Let me start by first saying I am a huge fan of Gunnm (manga/anime) and I played the game when I was a wee little kid. The game just blew me away at how amazing it is. But as you may already know, the difficulty was in its Japanese text making it hard to understand the story elements or items. So I never got to finish it...

But today by chance I have stumbled on your post on Romhacks forum saying you were going to translate it, and boy was I surprised! I gave up on seeing any translation for this game, until now :)

So I came here to say thank you for your hard work, and know that I am cheering for you to complete this project.

Know that there are others like me out there who are also fans and would be happy to see it translated.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the kind words.

Yeah the game is getting translated but it is a slow process.
However i do plan a new alpha in the next week or so.
This will do the first story part quite a bit with Alita and Hugo.

It won't be completely finished or polished, but playable :)
It's an alpha release.

Hi I know 2 possible translators who knows English and Japanese, I'm willing to pay them.

Other Ideas did you considered promo this project on youtube (more) , and other sites ? maybe worth to create a crowfunding to get money to pay to the translators.

About money I have 100 eur of budget (sorry).

Thanks for the offer to help out.

I have thought about hiring translators as there are those "hire a translator" sites where people can offer their translation services.
And i might end up doing that.
However the vast amount of script text and the pricing of getting things translated is usually a problem.
It will cost thousands if i let all the texts get translated.
Usually because it costs xx amount of dollars per 100/500/1000/10000 kanji.
And it adds up quickly.

At the moment i'm doing the Deepl.com machine learning translation and it does work out for the majority of texts as far as i can tell.
I might end up having to put up the troublesome texts up for a professional to translate.
These translation are NOT in the recent ISO build (which is crappy) and only for read via the script editer demo.
I've cleaned it up quite a bit and is far better.

If you know people who are willing to translate texts (even for a fee) i can put up the troublesome texts and have it done that way.

I'm still working on the project, but eye problems have made reading a monitor a pain atm, so last 1-2 months updates to the script were lacking.
Eyes are getting better though, so its just a temporary setback.

Also the project is on Discord https://discord.gg/XAqq2MG
You can always contact me there as well.

In the meantime i'm still working on having the script done up to the spaceport (1/2 of the game) and i can post troublesome texts more in the Discord/Forum.
We can work something out with having paid translators do the difficould parts.
I'll see what i can do to advertise this project a bit more.

So thanks for helping out!

I'll contact you later on skype if needed, its 1am here now.
