Hi everyone, its been too long.

We got the raws and a translation.
Since the last chapter went well with input from others, so here we go again.
Editing is mostly done, so just final text revisions are needed.

Lets get this new chapter out soon!

Noctis Labyrinthus is a canyons structure actually existing of Mars. That's where Kishiro placed the Grunthal base.

Thank you for continuing to translate the series!! And yay, finally, more künstlers!

Just some small stuff:

"(...) wearing black combat gears" - shouldn't be "gear"?

Isn't it "Far Darrig" or "Fear Dearg" rather than "Fardarrig"?

"And 6 minutes how long it took for total disarmament" - something seems to be missing, perhaps it could be "was how long"?

"Secret infos" - "secret info", I think.

And damn, the "kaaru" bit might be so many things! Karl, Kahl, kar (a geological formation)...

Also, I honestly don't remember if the general consensus is "Gerda" or "Gelda".

I know, but I was also referring to the past translations as I didn't remember the version that our illustrious scanlation group used before, haha.

I think I've been somewhat poisoned by the recent re-read of the Polish edition of Gunnm, too. They re-relased it with a new translation, you see, and not only does it lack the spark of the old one, but also something weird happened to some names. Fortunately I still own the old edition, but it pisses me off that we'll most likely get only one translation of Last Order, plus I'll have to see that "Ruw" instead of "Lou" for quite a while since we're not done with LO yet.

Well, Yoko is called Gally and there was this debate for some time as to whether it was Garry or Gally. It is quite the endless debate as everyone knows the japanese cannot specify if it's "l" or "r" sound, but in between.

Personally, she has always been called Gelda in the french version, which I found rather smooth sounding compared to the germanish "Gerda" !

Anyway, fictitious characters can be called whatever we want I guess...

And again Gally is an actual male name, while Garry is not. There was this thing in the very first chatpers that Ido named Gally after his deceased male cat, which pointed to his disturbed attitude to consider Gally a sort of doll of his property. Yes, Ido is quite a f***ed up dude

Sure locaalizations of Gunnm have made a lot of mess as usual. I remember Anomaly from the ZOT in the italian version was translitterated Ano Maru. Just, what?

But there is a name i'm particulary fond of. Tsumpo/Don Fua is actually Donphyr. You can read the name in the Karete Allies roster during the ZOT, when Donphyr pops up from Toji's body and the system enlist him as a challenger. And that panel wasn't translated. Kishiro wrote it directly in romanji.

Unfortunately, the problem with manga/anime and English names written in rōmaji is that usually you can't be sure whether it was written as intended or if it was just a bit of Engrish.

Like, there is a single panel with Lou wearing a name tag with "Ruw" written on it, and that single panel is the basis of the new Polish translation of her name, even though "Lou" is an actual name and it can be written in katakana the way it was written by Kishiro (ルウ). I suppose the same goes for Donfua.

On the other hand, Kishiro had no problems with the Judas Priest quotes on the soles of Sechs's boots...

I guess it'll always be like Zoro/Zolo from One Piece - "Zoro" sounds right to the majority of OP fans, some translations use "Zolo" because it's been seen in the official materials a couple of times, and the creators/IP owners don't seem to care.

And then there's クワトロ・バジーナ - y'know, the dude on my avatar - who's been called a variety of names over the years, "Vageena/Vagīna" included... Even the packaging of his quite recent scale figure says "Quattro Vageena", even though the official spelling has been "Quattro Bajeena" for quite a while now!

On a side note - didn't we have a theory that "Gally" came from "Galatea"? (While the cat might have been named "Gary" - ah, the joys of the Japanese language!)

Edit: Hahaha, never mind, I was actually the one who suggested this - almost a decade ago!

I actually happen to know someone named Gary, (as in Gary Cooper) and it seems to be quite a male name. So the argument does really depend on your nationality I guess. But in french we have many first names that can suit either a male or a female, I guess it's the same in other languages.

That's quite a solid point the one about the name being Gary.

Yet i think that when a name figures in the original Japanese panel in latin letters, we can assume that is the intended name. Thake this panel, for istance, hoping the link works:

Presumibly Kishiro himself or one of his staff drew the nametag with the Gally name on it. So, we can assume that Gally was the name in Kishiro intentions.

The same is for Donphyr, who appeared in the original japanese panel the way it is.

Maybe those details pass unnoticed by the translators or maybe they appear later in the publication and it's too late to correct a misstranslicteration but at last we can take then as the correct spelling.

I always wondered why, at least in the tankobon edition, the Japanese publisher, which has deals for foreign publication, it's not like anyone forces them to release abroad, doesn't just add a little glossary in the last page for the correct name spelling or adds a note with the raw material about it.

It's kinda an Imperial level of not giving a f**k

And i forgot to mention: Gally is a medieval english name. More like a last name then a first name, but sometime it's used as one. The first chapter of Gunnm clearly impies that it's a male name, so it can't really be a short for Galatea. Which is, by the way, the reason why in the american edition they changed the name to Alita, since Gally was clearly a male name and they, it seems, completely missed the point.

I think the reasons for the name was, probably, primarily because Kishiro liked it so, but elso to introduce a character element for Ido which was very important in the first chapters of GUNNM. Ido is borderline insane. He is a serial killer. With a moral code, yes, but still a serial killer. And he sees a pet in Gally, when he rebuilds her, so that's why he gives her the same name of his last pet, just like many per owners do. And he didn't care if it was a male name for a female girl. By the end, she was just a pet.
