Back to the Cyberpunk origins: Neuromancer

Post by MrFaber »

IMHO, but a solid one, i think that Neuromancer is the purest and most rapresentative source of inspiration for what the cyberpunk genre has been ever after, especially on the RPGs world.

It's not that, per se, it's such a memorable novel. It's a good con-story with compelling characters, a game changing twist that works, and a few sweet ideas that, back in the days, where quite original and fresh. So, a very solid piece of narrative indeed, just not a piece of history of it.

But, OMG, if you are in any measure involved with the Good Olde Cyberpunk 2020 rpg and everything that derived from it, Neuromancer is literally what started the thing.

We could summarize the plot in game terms as: A Fixer contacts a Solo and a retired Netrunner for a gig to bust and evil Corp very hard.

Having played CD Project Red's Cyberpunk 2077 i would say that the plot of Neuromancer have been, to keep it polite, a very strong inspiration for the game's main storyline. And i mean at plot level, beyond being the main source for the Cyberpunk 2020 ideas and setting.

William Gibson - Neuromancer created the whole genre and its codes, barely aged too as the descriptions are generic enough that the deck technology could be anything.

Corporations have no soul to save, and they have no body to incarcerate. (Baron Thurlow)
