That sounds interesting. Could you give me some more info?

Is it like Planetes or is it even more hard SciFi? How is the artwork? I've read, it contains mostly short stories, how is the storytelling, is it all cool or just average?

Once my time has been short recently, I have to read it little by little.
I am entering volume 4 and I daresay it is a very good work, although many members in this forum would never approve of the fact that the edition is reversed.

Can anyone inform about Planetes? I read about it somewhere some time ago, and Cailon's question made me remember that I should have taken a look at it.

The first volume of Planetes is good to read if you are short in time, because the chapters are only in a loose coherence. But you will get the feeling. Later on the artwork is getting even better and a consistent story developes.

IMO one of the best hard SFs ever, very scientifical, Yukimura thought a lot about mankinds first steps in space (like: no warp, still bound to our solar system, hopes along with new technologies but also fear and exploitation of poorer countries, ...).
There is also an anime (26 eps.), it contains only the story of he first 3 volumes and has some minor changes in story and artwork (mostly good ones).

And, OT, I have to say its very impressive, that his new work Vinland Saga takes place in England, 1000 A.D. and he had exeed himself with the artwork (esp. in the latest chapters)

Yes, the short story with a common background make a great novel.
I had read about that manga in a Brazilian manga magazine. They were complaining that it was never published in Brazil. They are right! The work deserves to be known.

I'll read Planetes now.

I just finished the first volume of 2001 Nights. I don't know if it gets better or not but if it just keeps up at this level, then its an awesome piece of manga!

Really, Im impressed about the brevity yet depth of (most of) the stories. Its just our own "boring, little" solar system but its full of great stories. Also I was impressed by the Lucifer- story at the end of volume 1. All in all there are manga with better artwork out there but 2001 Nights artwork still is very good (after all its from 1996) and the manga truly knows how to combine literature, religion, science, fiction and a bit philosophy.

@2001 Nights vs. Planetes: I don't know. If you're into hard sf, both are a must read. 2001 feels more like a novel in pictures while Planetes feels more like a real manga.

I hate spoiling expectations, but it is simply impossible to compare 2001 Nights and Planetes. 2001 Nights is a great piece of work, Planetes is just another manga.

I wached anime Planetes its quite total like some kind of manga ... but its way beter than Naruto or Bleach .. something like "not-head-hunter" Cowboy Bebop ... of curse with worse musik and graphic...

But still it is great story about human nature ..

Hm, Planetes is a seinen so it is per se better and more complex than shonen like Bleach or Naruto. So thats not a real praise for a seinen

I see more in Planetes than "just another manga". First, in the later volumes it has a good storywork about human characters, the vast emptiness in space vs. the simple love between humans. Here we have Hachirota (Hachimaki) and Ai but also Yuri and his wife (much shorter story) or Fee and her uncle (wich was imo very emotional).
Second, social and political level. Space terrorism, exploitation of the poor countries, war about sovereignty in space between industrial countries. Or the plain racial- conflicts (here between black and white), still ongoing on earth, regardless of all the new achievements of human kind.
Also the mangaka did some very good background research, i.e. the helium 3- drive, or the Kessler syndrome. That are aspects i missed in 2001 so far: who in hell will gather up all the tiny little, but very dangerous garbage in space? Especially when you read the last 10 pages of the manga, they are text only, you'll see, how much thoughts are behind the whole Planetes-Universe.

But as I said before, Im only at the beginning of vol.02 with 2001. Maybe in the end 2001 will exceed Planetes in every aspect, but I really doubt that. So therefore I see them on equal ground.

edit: Now that I'm finished with 2001 I have to admit, that 2001 Nights IS better indeed. Its an awesome piece of manga, really!
