Does the Bar Kansas barkeep actually have a name?
On p. 112 of Angel of Redemption when Alita calls New Kansas, he tells Shumira to get the phone and she responds "Okay Dokey!", but I've been wondering if this isn't another Viz translation error, given that Shumira also has a simplified speech pattern. In Martian Memory his name is given as "Master", which is what owners of cafes and bars in Japan are customarily addressed as. I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that he is called Joh in the OVA, but disagree with this as he never makes an appearance in the OVA. Track 7 on the Another Story OST is called Joh's Bar, but this track is actually played in the bar where Chiren and Ido talk as well as in another scene showing Yugo stealing a spine, and no BGM tracks are played in the scene when Gally and Ido go to Bar Kansas and Grewcica shows up. I wonder if someone has the complete edition and can verify what the original dialog was.

What Shumira said was a common American way of saying "Okay" in a much less formal way. Pronounced "Oh-kee Doh-kee".

In german, she only answers "Shumira is on her way already". In the french scans of the Complete Edition he is simply called "Le patron du kansas". Poor guy and his bar always get in the line of trouble caused by Alita and he doesn't even have a name it appears.^^

In the glossary, I call him Dokey because he was called that way. But, as far as I could notice, he has no name besides Joh in the OVA. We would have to check the original Japanese edition, as this could be another one of Viz interminable "accidents" reproduced in the retranslations.

"Okey dokey" is just a play on words/just a template phrase, meaning "OK", which I hear quite frequently in movies.
It's not a name, definitely.

Yes, as this is so commonly well known I didn't mention it above. In fact I had read it as "okey dokey" for such a long time that I was wondering where Dokey as a name was coming from until I noticed it one day. Joh I don't feel is legit for the reasons mentioned above as well. The fact that he is called Master in the game is another indicator that he possibly doesn't have a name. However on a related note the one hunter-warrior in there who has some minor screen time, the duck-billed guy with armor, is named "Blu" in the translation of the Supersonic Fingers side story available here, but is called "Hunter 1" in the game.Gatekpr wrote:What Shumira said was a common American way of saying "Okay" in a much less formal way.
