Re: looking to buy Alita last order
The 3 in 1 omnibus versions by Kodansha Comics USA are $19.95 MSRP. There are slight changes to the translations from what I've seen so far (e.g. Caerula's position in the SNS became Director vs. Chairman) but are largely the same. They are quite thick and my concern is that the spine will get stretched or the pages loosened by holding the volume too wide, so I avoid doing this.
As for the quality of the original Viz releases, I noticed that the pages have tended to turn a light brown over time if there is even indirect exposure to sunlight, so be wary of this.

Re: looking to buy Alita last order
I believe that buying the books from eBay is cheaper.
As to me, I have never suffered any problem about the paper quality, but I cannot understand what sort of indirect exposition to sunlight they could have had. I mean, I did read them (four times each volume, to be precise) under the sunlight, but there is no sunlight in my library except the one that enters through the windows, and the books have suffered no damage at all (and, Lord, the sun in São Paulo is really strong, while we have recently suffered with the heat - the global warming is the only explanation, I dare say. Anyway, that would be another story).

Re: looking to buy Alita last order
For a time they were stored flat on a shelf with the bottom sides exposed in a room that has venetian blinds, thus my supposition.
Looking at them all again though, it seems that the paper itself will yellow over time, I think due to the chemicals used in printing, unless there's something wrong with the air in my house.
Below is a scene from Vol. 7 with the flash off:

Here are all 15 volumes by Viz, starting from bottom to top, left to right, in order. You can see yellowing affecting the first 9 volumes.

By comparison, here are the first versions of the original series, in reverse order. The yellowing hit Vol. 9 really hard, the rest are fine.

It isn't the different versions of Gunnm paper quality that are off putting, I think. I got Vagabond, books 1 and 2, US barnes and noble. That paper is THICK. I'm not crazy about the manga but the physical quality of that viz line is screwing it up for everybody.

Thread necromancy! (Why make a new thread when there's a relevant one?)
Aside from the quality of the English translation (which is okay, from what I've heard), my question is: does the omnibus edition have coloured pages with unused cover art? Also, how many regular volumes are in an omnibus one? Five? Six?

It include 3 volumes of battle angel alita last order and around two one shots from the author
Re: looking to buy Alita last order
Okay, thanks. In the end I decided to buy a couple of volumes of the regular release. I like the covers too much to pass on them, and I wouldn't want to lug a volume of the omnibus edition around if I wanted to re-read LO while commuting to work.
Re: looking to buy Alita last order
Plus reading the regular volume is much more comfortable then reading the oversized omnibus books LOL
