What do we desire?
What do we have to show for ourselves?

Thank you very much for this newest release.

What the fuck means to be a necro soldier? I haven't figured it so far.

I finished reading Knights of Sidonia and that was a very good work.

Knights of Sidonia? I didn't finish volume 1. How could someone practically grown by himself (his grandfather had died years and years before the beginning of the story) speak fluently? There were so many absurdities in the half a volume I read that I became afraid of the entire collection.

This is not the place to discuss Sidonia, so I have to ask to the fellow forum members for their forgiveness.
Ask yourself, Sergio, if you would be able to alone teach a child how to speak, I think you would, right? Besides it isn't clear how much time have passed since his grandfather died at the beginning of the story. Finally I have to say that a manga that have won this year Kodansha's award must have to be good to a certain extent.

Everything is possible. That makes me remember when Silvester Stallone was nominated to the Oscar as best actor. I can imagine the old deans at the Academy laughing before astonished audience and media.

Anyway, I just gave my first impression, as I admitted that I read just 50% of volume 1.

Someone dies, and then is resurrected using highly advanced technology. The problem is that his free will is past, as it is controlled by someone who manipulates the wires, making him a puppet.

It isn't quite like that. I asked before how a puppet can pratice and improve its skills for 200 years all by itself? So far Yukito haven't defined very well what the heck is a necro soldier. At first it was like you wrote, but Erica's behaviour seems to be unfitting to that definition, and now, this last chapter twisted the question even more. "I'm a necro soldier, it can't be helped, life has this kind of things. I still have my motivations and my goals, they remain unchanged". For puppets, those guys are very autonomous as far we can see.

Since the beginning, this question remembered me a very interesting book I read about one year ago, "A Ilusão da Alma - Biografia de uma Ideia Fixa" http://www.companhiadasletras.com.br/de ... digo=12898 . It puts under analysis if we are really masters of ourselves or if all human behaviour is conditioned by our surroundings. If you don't know that book, I recommend it to you Sergio.

1. Actually, my explanation was incompetent. They are autonomous while Dasein ("the one who exists", as Caerula and Tsang define him) is not pulling the strings from the shadows.
2. I'd never heard about this book. I'll check it, certainly.

Now it makes more sense, I only hope that this is how Yukito thinks also.

This necrosoldier business seems to be alike some kind of hypnotic suggestion.

The subject behave like himself until certain external input triggers as it happened to Zazie's scout when he spotted Erika and got himself killed to save here (ok, that was cleary made up, since in the original BAALO sequence he was clearly "istant in love" and most likely insane, but it suits well as an example of what kishiro wants to be a necrosoldier).

He was having his life, unaware of his condition, until he spotted Erika and some, pre-installed, order "don not let Erika get killed" was trigged.

But as Gergt pointed out, is that much different from being alive at all? Don't we all respond "automatically" to certain inputs despite our free will?

I think this is a very important question in the forthcoming development and it might take its place in the whole GUNMM main theme: The definition of what a person is.

Briefly, so far K. had us asking ourself:

Is a Cyborg a human being (therefore a person)?
Is a human body with an artificial mind (brainchip) a person?
Is an artificial replica who share the same mind a person and, more of that, the same person of its original?
What if that replica also share the same memories?

And now: is a necrosoldier, someone who died, got resurrected, retains his personality but is subject to external control, a person and the same person of before? Or is that person dead and we are facing a replica that share the same body?

Now that background is set i'm starting to love GUNNM again :)
