Bemite is obviously like Marmite or Vegemite. They're concentrated yeast extracts that are very salty and kinda taste vaguely like soy sauce, sort of. I'm American, but I love Marmite on toast. I get the squeezy bottles from the international foods store whenever I can.

Incidentally, putting Marmite (or something similar) in a ham sandwich would be quite evil indeed. Salt + Salt = SAAAAALT.

Even though Marmite is a British product, concentrated yeast extract was originally invented by a German chemist named Justus von Liebig.

Judging by the "-ite" in the name, the usage of the product as a spread on bread, the characters' reaction to it, and how yeast extract was invented by a German dude and how that fits directly into the mythology around Mars in the setting, Bemite is directly analogous to Marmite or Vegemite.
