Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Today's box office for Alita: Battle Angel is 402 million dollars.
So, the movie offically broke even and made money. That doesn't guarantee at all that there will be a sequel. It's quite probable that there won't be one, because now Fox belongs to Disney and Disney seem to hate this movie.
Yet, what a result!
To think that critics began to sink this movie long before it was even out. According to media in december A:BA wouldn't have made even 100 million dollars. It was supposed to be the first huge flop of 2019, losing at least 200 million dollars. Marketing capaign for this movie was non existent. In February almost no one but the fans had any idea what the movie was about.
Yet it didn't flop. It opened with some difficulties but soon people started to say "hey, that's a good movie!" and many more people went to watch it. Legions of new fans of Alita who never read the manga popped out everywhere, and despite numbers never went really bigs, interest grew and everyone was talking about it.
At this point critics and detractors went nuts and started to attack the movie constantly, with the most ridiculous statements possible. They say that Alita was hypersexualized, that the was a sex-bot, that she was an u nderage waifu for middle aged men, and so on.
Yet a week after week the box office results kept growing and the drop of income from week to week had been unusually low, meaning that a lot of people went back to see the movie again and new people was convinced to give it a try every week.
Until, a week ago, the box office broke thet 400 million dollar milestone. And critics went nuts again, stating that this numbers mean nothing, that they won't save the movie, that there won't be any sequel anyway (probably true).
Then, on tuesday, some number was reviewed and the total was again under 400M, short of one million, for the joy of the detractors and the frustration of those who went in and out to support the movie. And already it's almost nowhere to be found in cinemas.
And yet, it seems that Alita just never gives up, and this week the movie, somehow, collected 3 fresh million dollars. 3 million... after this many weeks, with barely any teatre still having the movie in.
Just amazing. Probably there won't be a sequel, but we can be proud of this movie and how it menaged to capture the heart of so many people who didn't know that GUNNM even existed.

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
I am proud and, despite of it having flaws and some major changes of manga's plot, think that is the best entertaining movie in my 33 years old life. Seen it 10 times and did not got bored. Still want to see again, but the screening is over in my area ( i will die in abstinence syndrome before digital copies or Blu-rays will be released.MrFaber wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2019 8:04 pm Just amazing. Realy hope for the sequel! and f*ck disney. If they hate it, Cameron can bring it to the other studio. Main thing that if Cameron himself wants a sequel, despite of it being no so so good at box office.
Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
The face looks like crap.
I think the movie is ok the way I think the first 2 books are ok. If we can get to Den it will be all awesome,
but until then it is ... it was ok. I am happy to see that it had broad appeal.

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Her face is awesome. i've had a butthurt when i saw it in the first trailer but fell in love with it after watching whole movie. As many of those who watch it for 10+ times.

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
I can only mention Brazilian sites as sources because I didn't research too much this subject, despite the relative low budget and the unexpected good grossings, the movie would have to pass the 500 million mark to actually earn profits and justify a sequel.
From my side, I would like to see a similar case as Judge Dredd: the first movie flopped and they made a much better second one. From what I have seen through the years, generally sequels doesn't improve over the first release.

My jaw dropped, that is unthinkable for me!Neksus wrote: Mon Apr 01, 2019 6:00 am Seen it 10 times and did not got bored. Still want to see again, but the screening is over in my area

The Hell is here, life itself is hell and humans are at the same time the demons and the damned.
Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Man, watching it over 10 times is brainwashing, my brain would become jelly if I tried that! Even my all time favorite movies I didn't watch them over 3~4 times.Neksus wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:07 am Her face is awesome. i've had a butthurt when i saw it in the first trailer but fell in love with it after watching whole movie. I think her face is almost cute in some scenes, but nothing beyond that.

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
with 400 mil they already justified production budget. With incomes from merch, tv licensing, streaming and dvd\blu-ray sales they will get at least some minor profit. Also it's not all just about the numbers, it's about greatly exceeding "expert's" expectations. Now there is a solid base for a franchise and sequels is going to bring a lot more money.kamugin wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:20 am the movie would have to pass the 500 million mark to actually earn profits and justify a sequel.

the scientific explanation of what you most likely experiencing is called the mere exposure effect. Not related to this topic but it is used commonly in some parts of entertainmentNeksus wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:22 amwith 400 mil they already justified production budget. Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
It doesn't matter how does it called scientifically. Every aspect of human life can be described scientifically. The matter is that it works like nothing else before. I said already that usually i don't want to see a movie twice or thrice(second for digital copy after screening) but i did want in case of Alita. How does it called scientifically?)00_unit wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:45 am the scientific explanation of what you most likely experiencing is called the mere exposure effect. Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
This "exposure effect" as you call it, on me have the opposite effect. I may like a cartoon/animated movie at first, however when my 5yo daughter starts rewatching it over and over, like kids usually do, very soon I come to hate it.00_unit wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:45 am the scientific explanation of what you most likely experiencing is called the mere exposure effect. Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
I feel the same. That's why i don't watch many times any film, even if i like it much. But Alita just broke my will and made me her slave ;Dkamugin wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 6:29 am This "exposure effect" as you call it, on me have the opposite effect. Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Not saying it works on everyone, it works on average individual there will always be exception and outliers, I mean I'm not affected by it, as every time I hear songs I hate the first time, I wouldn't like it the many next time they loop it (though some will like it due to repetition kind of like brainwashing). You guys are obviously the outliers. Also the opposite of exposure effect is also desensitisation I'm pretty sure.Neksus wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 6:40 amI feel the same. after all sometimes scientific phenomenon refers to the average not everyone as there will always be exception and outliers.

Interestingly the mere exposure effect says it doesn't apply or it is weaker to childrenkamugin wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 6:29 amThis "exposure effect" as you call it, on me have the opposite effect. Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
How to have "anime eyes" and still be cute:
The question is only about having a good artist to do the job or not.
Spoiler:

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
It is not a "realistic human-like look", plastic doll at best. Like from another full CGI anime. It's ok for something like Resident Evil CGI movies tho.kamugin wrote: Mon Apr 08, 2019 7:04 am How to have "anime eyes" and still be cute:

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Remember that the main reason Cameron and Rodriguez choose the big eyes was to emphasize that Alita wasn't human, their Alita was a "doll" in many ways.

Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
You're wrong. They didn't want to "emphasize that Alita wasn't human". They wanted her to be a human, but with lineaments of anime stile. Your picture is just jeneric doll-looking anime character from CGI anime.kamugin wrote: Mon Apr 08, 2019 8:54 am Remember that the main reason Cameron and Rodriguez choose the big eyes was to emphasize that Alita wasn't human, their Alita was a "doll" in many ways.
Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
Yeah ... the CG face was absolutely due to a manga misconception. Cameron thought it would be cool because Anime. It is interesting to note that Zapan and Jashugan both have their actual faces ....surprised it didn't get a sexism strike for that. I really hope they start the next movie and it is the lead actress's real face...Ido is working on her and he is just like, "there is an upgrade in Facial technology" and just put it into the past. We are limping to the next movie, if at all; my idea will at least save money.
Re: Alita really is the "Battle Angel".
It was Rodriguez's idea to keep stylised manga-ish look from early concept-arts. Cameron just agreed with it. And that was realy nice decision. Most of the new movie fans fell in love with that unusual look of heroine. I've became fan of manga along before the movie went in production, but I still like her face in the movie, realy adds even more flavour to the lovely character.
