Well, I agree that men like tails, but that's ridiculous.

Well, the cat references began right from the start with her being named after one. They never really went away either. On reflection I'm mildly surprised that didn't come up earlier. Perhaps he felt encouraged by the bunny costumes of 11 and 12. Not to mention he was incorporating the design of the Jovian weapon she took her form from.

Regardless I've liked this and her last several costumes. Kishiro knows pretty much who and what Alita is and how he wants her to look and the artwork reflects this. Even with the vampire arc I've been pretty pleased with where this manga has been going.

I was referring to the English word that children use to identify a cat.
It has another meaning in adult usage.

Cause I know that "baka" is written with kanji for horse and deer. Logic being, I guess, that person that finds those two the same is a fuckin' idiot.

Logic between deer, horse and female sex organs... Sorry... I'm fresh out of imagination.

Now... perchance it is the case of literal and "deep" Japanese.

I read somewhere that a certain Japanese scholar claimed that "I love you" translated into Japanese meant "The moon is blue tonight" or "Your moon is blue tonight"... something like that.
Now, what does any of that have to do with Kentucky, I don’t know – but it sure does sound stupid.

Well, the girl was a real Japanese, not a Brazilian descendent. Her Portuguese was typical of a university student and when I mention some Portuguese words used to refer to the female pudenda, she mentioned "baka" as the Japanese taboo word, so it seems there's no mistake.

The second point is: why would Alita say "horse" or "deer" at that moment? Did she intend to offend Ido or what? Or was she missing anything?

As to the logic, there's no logic between a cat and the female sex organs either, I should say.

It would be helpful if anyone fluent in Japanese (as for example newbieff) could inform.

The fact is: I had told the girl that the Brazilian Portuguese word "babaca" was originally used to say "idiot", but in some regions it was also the female pudenda, and then she told me that in Japanese it was "baka". It seems that I simply misunderstood what she meant.

Alita was simply saying that Ido was an imbecile with his question.

Now I have a new question: why that was not translated?

something i would like to point out, i am not fluent in japanese, i can only barely read it if i try really hard (for example, it takes like 20 minutes to read about 1 page of untranslated manga, understanding about 50%- 60% of what they are saying)

what i am fluent at is reading chinese

anyways, the kanji for Baka is in fact "horse" "deer", or at least according to how it is written (kanji = chinese letters, i can read those fluently

) there must be some anecdote for how it became what it means, i think

anyways, i think it wasn't translated because well, i think it gives off more character and liveliness to the dialogue, i guess
other explanation may include that i think pretty much anyone know what baka means, therefore eliminating the need to translate and just write it phonetically

There was a pun in Elfen Lied manga about it.
In his flashback Kouta drew a picture of a deer ("baka" in kanji), but Yuki said to him that it was a stupid deer (smth like "baka(kj) baka(kana)" or so).

And, belive you or not, in russian if you tell some guy "You're a deer" this would have an exact meaning as "You're an idiot". XD

Why no translation? I guess cause translator figured that it was a VERY well known word. We all know what baka means, right?

As for pussy having meanings other then cat... In German it is also die Muschi (kitty).
Yanks also call it beaver...

Well, I insist there's no similarity with a cat.
Anyway, beaver, although more similar, is a terrible name.

In the end, I do prefer pussy, chatte or even xana.

In some parts of Germany we call cats 'Muschi' but it can be the womens pussy, too. In other parts the meaning for the cat is unknown.

Interestingly a very conservative high minister of Bavaria always called his wife 'Muschi' in the public. So, big parts of Germany were really shocked by this.
