"In a similar vein, the name Alita wound up with connotations beyond my original thoughts: I found out a year later that there is a Russian silent expressionist film called Aelita, Queen of Mars. And the name, obviously, was chosen well before I hit those parts of the story."

The classical story of Pygmalion and Galatea.
Pygmalion of Cyprus becomes a sculptor who falls in love with one of his beautiful ivory statues. His prayers to Aphrodite are granted and Galatea comes to life.
It's curious that our character in Gunnm is named both Gally and Alita. What a coincidence that combined we have Galita. Galatea? Hmm...
