Didn't know about that one, I'll have to see it.
Maybe Kishiro picked the name "Alita" from this?
Nice find, anyway :)

:| Umm... Alita's name in the original manga (Tsutsu Yume Gunnm) is Gally, not Alita... Alita is the name of a cat...

sorry to revive an old thread but for anyone who cares:

Fred Burke (US translator for Gunnm):
"In a similar vein, the name Alita wound up with connotations beyond my original thoughts: I found out a year later that there is a Russian silent expressionist film called Aelita, Queen of Mars. And the name, obviously, was chosen well before I hit those parts of the story."

From the gunnm faq: http://www.reimeika.ca/marco/gfaq.html#Q15

How about this possible connection?

The classical story of Pygmalion and Galatea.

Pygmalion of Cyprus becomes a sculptor who falls in love with one of his beautiful ivory statues. His prayers to Aphrodite are granted and Galatea comes to life.

It's curious that our character in Gunnm is named both Gally and Alita. What a coincidence that combined we have Galita. Galatea? Hmm...
