Either you don't know the meaning of cognate or I was unable to understand you.

Actually... she is quite correct.

Upper image is Liquid's and M-chan's translation (from back when they worked with crazyankan and Ripper), the lower one is a quick scan by me from the VIZ's volume 8.

Kishiro has obviously used the litteral meaning of the word's Latin root to name his vampires.
The word cognate derives from Latin cognatus, from co (with) +gnatus, natus, past participle of nascor "to be born".[1] Literally it means "related by blood, having a common ancestor, or related by an analogous nature, character, or function".

It was discussed a bit in the relevant chapters- topic. About how good or bad it was, to bring this fantasy- element into the story.
I think most readers first where shocked, when suddenly a vampire appeared in a future cyber- tech manga. But Kishiro in my eyes managed to build this part into the story very good.

But I cant recall any discussions about the characters itself, aside from "whoow, what a damn cool fight" and so on ;)

So what is to say about them? You are the fan, make some points! :)
Personally I always thought, these characters where very round and finished. Because they only appeared in a side story, they where left fully developed with everything told about them. But you could convince me from the opposite.

when we first hear about vampires, around tome 5 or 6 when Trinidad warns the last order units to not challenge her, i was like WTF

and this WTF spirit didn't left me for vol 8 and 9, but since we were talked a lot about pre-apocalypse era, birth of melchizedek etc. it was ok.

now, thinking back, it was a hell of a bet for kishiro ! a scientific explanation for vampires ... in the end, it fits quite well in the story.

yeah at first i thought how could a vampire beat so many human's <guns and other fast pase weapons> but they the cognate like vilma live for a very long time at most and have time to perfect skill and trian in many fighting arts.
but we all knew alita could beat vilma one way or an other, but if the twin azure blades were not used agianst alita vilma could have destroyd our little octopus lipd hero. that alone gave me great respect for vilma .

Ah thats right, I nearly forgot that. Vilma said something about her blades, that they didnt allow her to cut Alita and her blades made a swing around her head (otherwise GLO wold have had only 5 volumes and a sad ending ;) )
Maybe Alita really has a destiny or good karma or so and this is not only crazy Desty Nova stuff.

about Vilma dodging every attack: this is a special technique of Vilma. I dont think, every cognite could do that but some have other abilities. I.e. Victor dont have to dodge something, because he has this armor.

edit: ohhh, and i liked that vol 09 cover! The style was kind of like an american comic but it does look good.

All right! It's clear now.
I simply misinterpreted the message.
I had read "cognate" as the grammatical rule about universal worlds like drama or hospital, for example (that is, such words are the same in almost every language).
So, there is no relation.

ah yes each cognate have abiltiy's victor has the armor ability and vilma has the regeneration, like when she lost her arm in vol 9 after killing victor , her near daeth experience had gained her the regenerate ability.
cause victor said " a long lived cognate can undergo several several alterd shock's those who survive develop special abilites which we name satans honor"

victor named his scale armor
but vilma had not named her's what do you think would be a good name for it?
i think perhap's ""fachiri hell pentgenerate""

Mmm, the cognates... The most common complain I hear about them is that the use of vampires was a cliché and a "Hellsing ripoff"! Some people should seriously look closer at the function of a character before they go berserk.

I enjoyed the introduction of Vilma and company because I thought it was a clever way to reveal some of the mysteries of the Gunnm-universe. From the start of the original manga I always wondered about the reason behind the post-apocalyptic nature of the setting Alita found herself in. The lack of a clear explanation of this made me anticipate that it would be revealed sooner or later, although I didn't expect to wait 16 volumes. Using immortal (or ancient at least) vampires to tell the story was a twist I didn't expect. You could do worse though.

I've also taken quite a liking to the name Caerula Sanguis. If I ever get a cat I will name her that.

Actually, the usage of vampires is really overexploited.
But, after reading and knowing Vilma, I agree entirely with you. What a great character!
