Mother#u%$^! bastards!!!!

Post by denzacar »

Just browsing through Amazon... window shopping and all...
When its marketroids decide to give me a heads up about the stuff I might want to buy, and lo and behold - it is the Last Order volume 10.

"Oh! Goody-goody! :D" - I think to myself as my heart does the happy dance inside my chest.
"I might even get to put it on the shelve, next to its sisters, BEFORE July." - Educated guessing based on VIZ playing the guy with no hands in the kingdom of deaf mutes, and all that.

With proper level of anxiety (Go June! Go June! Go June!) I scroll down to see the product details and publishing date.

Luckily... I have a rather strong heart.
I tend to avoid unhealthy habits such as drugs, smoking, constant drinking, electroshocks, sex with farm animals and politics.
If you practice any of the above, and are also a connoisseur of fine manga such as Battle Angel Alita and Battle Angel Alita: Last Order - I'd recommend at least a deep breath before proceeding.

Fecal matter eating children of unwed mothers at VIZ have slated it for... brace yourself... December of 2008.
Product Details

* Paperback: 210 pages
* Publisher: VIZ Media LLC (December 9, 2008)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1421521644
* ISBN-13: 978-1421521640
FYI... That will put it just a tad shy of a year and a half between Japanese and English release.

Who do they have doing the translation? Daredevil and Hulk?
Who have also just happened to burn the only original copy they had, so Daredevil is redrawing it from Hulks memory?
Or is the other way around?
7 ft. high green neanderthal with tree trunks for fingers is doing the drawing while the blind guy tells him how it goes?

Just got me a brand new reason not ever to watch Naruto or Bleach.
Cunts!
But look around you ...
Death and Light are everywhere, always, and they begin, end, strive,
attend, into and upon the Dream of the Nameless that is the world,
burning words within Samsara, perhaps to create a thing of beauty.

Apologies for the OT :P

Ripper has been hiding the paypal donation button very well.
You find it at "Home" and there is a tiny button or here

Took me some years before I found it :P

Hmm.. that is not just well hidden. XD

OK... maybe it is my fault for bookmarking the torrent page instead of the home page. :P
I am not even sure I ever clicked on the "Home" link until now.

Well... now that I know where it is, I see no reason not to chip in here and there. Like when I download a volume or something. :D

What's the problem? 18 months behind is pretty decent for translated JP content.

Usually Gunnm is published roughly 6 month after the japanese release.
We have strangely the exact same problem with the french edition. I'm starting to think that there is more than laziness behind that delay.
Maybe the copyright negotiation went wrong somehow, or Kishiro insisted that the one year break he took injapans was also taken for the foreign countries? I don't really know.

First post by the way, hello everyone, I'm just a random French fan of gunnm. Nice to meet you.

actually, you're maybe right.

judging by the number of readers that got bored by the 6 first GLO volumes, and the vampire flashback, maybe this is all ploted to keep only the true fans ? it's nothing logic for this commercial world, so it can't be like this.

so what ? fan-lations are up in multiple languages by now, its not even a technical matter, retail volume can be sold in few weeks, anytime whenever they want.

so its probably a legal issue but the lack of communication is annoying, and if you put in line the ugly printing job ( http://gratosnet.free.fr/glenat_scandaleux/ ), i'm really wondering why we wait for this shit.

I am kinda losing you here... can't quite understand what you are trying to say. So if I sound a bit... like an asshole please forgive me.

Yup there would be no logic in that "true fans" strategy.
VIZ is a business. They do it for the money. And money is right now spelled N-A-R-U-T-O or B-L-E-A-C-H.
GUNNM is for them obviously one of those "Ah what the hell, lets print it when we have the rights already..."
so what ? fan-lations are up in multiple languages by now, its not even a technical matter, retail volume can be sold in few weeks, anytime whenever they want.

I don't get this "so what?".
So what who? So what "I want to get my greedy little fingers on the printed material".

I've totally lost you on the "ugly printing job".
Its better to wait so they don't fuck it up?
Or - who cares about it anyway, they fuck it up every time?

As for the legal matters...
I am guessing (absolutely NO valid info to back this up, just guesses and logic) is that they probably have it stated somewhere in their copyright contract that they will print and sell the US version by a certain period of time after the Japanese version is out.
A clause like that would be only logical. Otherwise, VIZ could sit on their rights for years waiting for the absolutely cheapest printing prices and the biggest printing volume to further reduce the "per copy" price.
Meanwhile, Kishiro ans co. would get $0.00 in royalties waiting for the manga to be sold.
Wait long enough and you may not have to pay at all - artist might die of starvation. Or more likely, an inflation will come around and you can save hundreds of thousands or even millions in printing costs and copy rights.

So, a clause like that should probably be there. Just so as to set the longest allowed deadline that they have to get it printed and in the shops by.

Also, there is probably some shortest allowed deadline set as well - so as to avoid the "unfair competition".
You know... so VIZ would not get the Japanese version of manga BEFORE the volumes in Japan come out (the way scanlators do it - from the magazines) and have it printed before the Japanese version is out and drown its selling potential.

Or let us even say that there is some clause in the contract that will force VIZ to wait for the NEXT Japanese volume to come out before they can print theirs.
Not very logical, but I am trying to find SOME reason other than greed and playing it safe for the prints outside of Japan to wait for that entire year Kishiro took to do GUNNM Gaiden to pass.

But... it is one thing abide the contracts and all, while it is another thing entirely to be a lazy ass offspring of female dogs and slate it back till the end of the year.
If Ze Germans can have it done by June - WTF can't VIZ do the same?
Or Italians, who have printed it twice by now.

They probably all have the same blanket contract - but VIZ chooses to delay the prints 'till the end of the year - because it is not that important to them.
And that kinda pisses me off.

I read the manga when the good people running this site translate and put it up, and I still preorder it on Amazon couple of months before it comes out.
Is it too much to expect it printed a year after the Japanese version?
But look around you ...

OMG, thats the quality of your issue? The publisher can be glad for every single cent from you (if he knew, you had the scans before). Its mirrored, its not fitting the site and they can't tell the difference between 5 things shaped like whatever and one thing shaped like an onion.

In germany, most mangas today are in the right reading order, but i.e. in my older BAA volumes missing text at the bottom of the page also was quite usual, even missing text in some boxes. Anyway, with todays standards in printing and so on, it really shouldn't be a problem, to do a proper release. They earn money with that, damn.
btw: Its also december in germany. It seems, this is really not Viz' fault alone.

edit: @ denzacar: Its odd, http://www.amazon.de has two Volume 10's. It says for one article, release date on june, and for the other article of the same volume 10 it says december. But only the december- thing has a picture and everything, so I assume the june- thing is canceled. CarlsenComics, our publisher, might've not noticed it yet.

Check again.

Notice the different prices and ISBNs?
Also... Publisher and language being different...

That is because, this one is by VIZ, in English and it comes out in December, while this one is by Carlsen, in German and it comes out in June.

Nope... VIZ is just being lazy.

Yeah, french éditor Glénat is totally butchering Gunnm.
- Mirrored
- No color pages. Ok, they aren't so common, but it still count to my eyes, especially now that most of the ohter manga editors do them.
- ONE missing page. Yes, they did that. Volume 6. When Gally head is cutted by Caerulea Sanguis. They managed to forgot the right part of the double page illustration. It made me rages for weeks. I still haven't seen any reprint, or even an apology from the editors...
- Inacurate namessome even change from one volume to another. Zazi was first Xazi, then Xaji. Caerulae was phonetically translated kaerula Sangwiss... And so on. It's like the translator, who did a very good job in the original Gunnm, doesn't care anymore.
- Wrong text placement. Some texts bubble are swapped, on some very obvious part.

Glénat just don't try anymore for me. Gunnm quality was allright when it was one of the most sold manga there, but now that people prefer to read Bleach or Berserk, I guess the priorities changed...

Hmm... did they perhaps change the editors?
Drop in the quality is usually because of laxed quality control - which is editor's job.

As for mirroring... well... in most cases I personally don't care that much.
As long as they edit all the spots so there are no mirrored letters etc.
I mean... original VIZ Battle Angel manga's were mirrored.
Alita was left handed until Last Order. :P

Still I like the old prints better. Larger format and all... :D

sorry for my english, i was drunk and high when i wrote this (that's usually the case, drugs makes me going verbose)

french GLO editor doesn't give a shit about customers, that's a fact.

and about the first point, lot of LO readers stopped reading during the vampire flashback. we are hardcore fans, so we didn't give up, and were even watching the untranslated scans while waiting for the (sometime butchered) retail translations ...

Well... I only know hardcore fans.
And I don't really read stuff that I am not interested in, so "Bo-hooh... this episode sucks I won't read it anymore" is kind of like... incest.
Like... I know that there are people doing that, and who am I to stand in the way of their love, but it is just not something I'd ever do.

I keep forgetting that I've registered an old e-mail account to receive announcements and newsletters from Carlsen Manga - German publisher of Battle Angel Alita and Battle Angel Alita: Last Order.
So this is about a week late...
BATTLE ANGEL ALITA
Last Order 10

Since I am lazy and it is quite late here...

Volume 10 is out in Germany.
Volume 11 coming out autumn 2008.

Are you familiar with ordering from regular amazon? Kind of the same thing.

The link I've sent you should already be in English, if not - search for the "To translate this page in English, Click here." text on the upper right side of the page.
That will display some parts of the page for you in English.

Click "Add to shopping cart" button or in this case "Preorder this item today" button.
Click "Proceed to checkout". That will send you to the login page.

Click on the "To translate this page in English, Click here."
Enter your e-mail and choose "I am a new customer." button.

Where it says "Or enter International (Outside of Japan)" - click that.

Enter your info, and click "ship to this address".

After that you will have to enter you credit card details, choose shipping speed etc. and... that would be that. Clicking on "Place your order" on the final screen (The "Please review and submit your order" one) will complete the transaction and soon after that you will get an e-mail confirming your order.

BTW... shipping charges are QUITE high for mailing outside of Japan.
Amazon.co.jp Order Summary
Items: ¥ 648
Shipping & Handling: ¥ 3,700
Order Total: ¥ 4,348
That comes out to 6$ for the manga, and 34$ for shipping.

Links please?

As for shipping... You are probably not gonna get much cheaper than that anyway.
Being that Japan is an island(s) "on the other side of the world" from about almost everything. Mail has to skip over a ocean or a huge land mass wherever you send it. Which means airmail, which means every gram counts. :P

Though... Amazon.jp is ripping people off in the shipping department.
I mean... Alita figurine AND manga were shipped to me for about 20-something US dollars.
<they got the figure for abour 30 us buc'k's that crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not sure what are you trying to say here?
Are you referring to the price of shipping, or to the price of Alita figurine somewhere?

On an unrelated note, I just checked Glenat's website (french editor of Gunnm LO), and volume 10 is scheduled for the 18/11/2008.
Well, better late than never I guess.
I just hope the 11th volume don't take another year to come.
